Slow performance with QuickBooks
I have spent much of the day today researching performance tuning with
samba. I have tried everything that I can find out about how to make
performance faster. I checked disk performance with Bonnie, installed FTP
and tested a transfer that way, achieving 6-7 MB / second. about 30 seconds
for 150 MB file. I was finally able to achieve those speeds on a file
transfer to the server through

DHCP & interfaces
Setup: I am running a fresh install of RedHat 6.1 with Samba 2.0.5a installed.
My samba machine receives its ip address through a WinNT DHCP server.
Problem: When I start Samba, it tries to use the loopback adapter to broadcast
its NetBios messages accoridng to tcpdump.
Solution #1: Set interface to use in smb.conf file.
This is rejected since the address of the interface is issued by the DHCP

some shares in browselist not showing up in spite of browseable = yes
Hello,
In my smb.conf (or actually, in "committees.conf" included from smb.conf,
a defined share does not show up in the browselist, nor any other
share defined AFTER that particular one (either in that file or
in smb.conf after the include statement).
The shares are accessable though (when mapped to a drive letter or
used as UNC). Ofcourse I tried to look for odd

Backing Up Files I Don't Own
Hi,
I need to back up all of /home on a remote server for which I have root
access but cannot (and will not) do root logins via ssh. Of course if I
attempt to rsync files that I don't own, rsync skips over them. My account
is allowed to sudo, if that helps. How can I use rsync to do the following:
rsync -av --compress --progress --delete -e me@SomeRemoteServer:/home

Are the connections between Domain Controlers encrypted?
Hi,
Just that is my question: Are the connection between DC encripted?.
I'm planning to create a secondary DC on a external dedicated server and i
want to know if the connections are secure, because is not a good idea to
have authentication data traveling through internet without any kind of
encription...
My main DC have ldap through ssl activated and working fine, but i don't
know if

How to encript SIP comunications?
Hello Fach,
I have used openvpn for a while and in the new release thereis a feature called "server
mode" that makes posible to have a full network of vpn links besides a single TUN/TAP
adaptor (a pure software NIC) in the server. I haven't used that feature, but I think
this is what you need. Also openvpn runs on linux, *bsd, solaris, windows, and maybe in
other OS.

SUMMARY: Samba 2.0 and passwords
I would like to see those of us who send an inquiry to this list also send
a summary of what fixed the problem so that someone in the future could
find the answer. I searched archives for an answer and only found
questions. Since a lot of folks reply ot individuals then even the replies
don't end up in the archives and so it would be nice if summaries were sent
to the list. Anyway, enough

Selective Compression/Encryption
Currently compression and I assume if encryption is implemented it is
turned on or off during mount. There are however many times when a user may
want to select which files/directories they want to compress or encrypt.
This will also be helpful when implementing btrfs support in grub for
example. We can say the disk can be compressed/encrypted except for /boot so

Hi,
Thanks for your help. I set my samba debug level = 3. How to run it with verbose
logs? I can't find it under samba-1.9.17p4/docs. Where can I find troubleshooting
docs? Could you tell me the web site address? I can't find it under
http://us1.samba.org/samba/.
I tried running net view \\morpheus (that is our linux) and got the following:

Does rsync use encription also for local tranfers?
Hy everybody,
I'm using rsync to backup/synchronize folders to/from USB connected external hard drives.
But I can't find an answer to a doubt.
Does rsync use encription also for local tranfers?
For "local transfer" I mean a transfer that doesn't go through a network like
folders synchronization with external hard drives.
I'm asking because the speed of local transfers

nis passwords
Has anyone come up with a creative way to us nis passwords for both encripted
and non-encripted passwords? Or a way to convert the nis password table to
the smbpassword file, without having each user to login and change their
password?

Fail on "Test 8" - proposed solution fails...
I have run through DIAGNOSIS.txt and gotten to step 8. When entering :
> net view \\<my server name>
I get:
Error 86: The specified network password is not correct. Type the correct password, or contact your network administrator for more information.
This is funny, because when I type:

I get:

NTLM
Hey there!
Can you guys tell me about what's the status of docs of NTLM/NTLMv2
provided by Microsoft?
Let me explain why I need that: we had here a discussion on a local
college about "free x proprietary software", and the Microsoft guy
(always them, right?) told us about a case where he claimed that
Firefox sent one user username and password through the network

after that i receive the dialog box again!
Maybe my card do not support WEP or I am doing something wrong?
