License manager
Has anyone successfully incorporated a Win95 app that uses FlexLM
license manager on a Samba file system. I would be extremely interested
in talking with you as we are trying to install Parametric Technology's
ProEngineer on our Samba file server. We do have a copy of the
Unix version of the license manager, but I am not sure how I can get
the Win95 client to talk to it.

Timestamp problem
Hello,
Please forgive this message if it has already been discussed, but I could
not find the answer to my question in the archives or any documentation, so
I joined this list.
I'm running Samba 2.0.3 on Red Hat Linux 5.2 with all update RPMS installed
and Kernel 2.2.2. I have compiled Samba and the Kernel from their respective
source tarballs. I used the --with-smbmount switch with

Performance tips for heavily loaded servers
Does nayone have a collection of performance tips for heavily loaded
samba servers?
I have a server that routinely has 45-90 connections and just runs really
poorly. We've thrown more memory at it w/ some benefit, but not
significant.
This is on a linux 2.0.35 based machine.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Encryption
Kevin,
Firstly, you need to obtain the DES libraries.
Then you need to tell the Samba Makefile that you wish to compile in DES encryption services and link
with the DES library.
Then in the smb.conf file you need to add to the [Globals] section:
encrypted passwords = yes
Then you need to create a separate smbpasswd file. Please read the documentation in the docs directory
of the Samba source

Can anyone shed some light on this subject? I don't have a clue where to
begin looking. It's RHL 6.0, Samba 2.0.3, stock kernel.

problems with a WinNT SMB server
Hello,
as a new Linux user (Red Hat6.0) I am trying to mount hard drives from a
local network which is managed by a windows NTServer. When I try to
launch from the command line:
smbclient -L servername
I am prompted for a password, which I presume is the same password that
I use when I login from a Windows environemt. Given the pasword I get

No automatic refresh?
Hi!
I've been struggling with this install of Samba 2.0.4b on Linux/x86 2.0.36.
All of the client machines run Windows NT 4, SP 3.
I'm exporting /tmp as pub, and if I right click in the folder and create
a new folder, it doesn't show up until I go to 'view' and 'refresh'.
If I delete something, it doesn't go away until I refresh.
Why?

Changing "Shutdown" to "Log off" in Win95?
The Samba set up we're using to support 25 or so Win 95 clients
is working well, but my users are usually not up to complicated
tasks. Has anyone found a way to get logging out down to a single
action (like, Start/Logout), instead of Start/Shutdown/Close all
programs and log in as another user/Yes?
I'm tired of explaining this already! :)

SAMBA 1.9.18p10 problem
I have been using Samba 1.9.18p8 in a Solaris 2.6 machine for months
but suddenly this week there is a problem. Nothing's changed.
I have some persistent connection of my NTSP3 client to the samba share.
When I login as usual, it fails to mount the drive. It either prompt for
password but whatever password the samba rejects, or give a "Access is
Denied" when you try to access the

Winbind causes LLOONNGG delays
I have Samba 3.0.4 joined to a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain
with about 16,000 users and 1,000 groups. I run FreeBSD 5.2.1 on a
Dell PowerEdge 1750, dual proc P4 Xeon with HTT and 1 gig of RAM.
Storage is RAID-5, three drives, 36G each. I use winbind to auth
users when accessing shares on the server. This is going to be our
new fileserver.

Where are my /tmp and /var/tmp files?
I was pulling my hair out this morning trying to figure out why my PHP web
script could see files in /var/tmp/scriptname but I couldn't see them with
ls or my text editor. I was certain I'd gotten rootkitted. Then I thought
maybe it was a new chroot in the latest Apache config. It turns out it's
systemd's unit file for Apache, which containerizes /tmp and /var/tmp for

'/tmp' does not exist or permission denied ...: /tmp has 777 permission
Not sure what caused it. It must be some change to permissions. I know
I changed the root password with passwd and changed it back afterwards
when problems started. I know for sure I didn't change a thing to the
samba config. No firewall running atm.
This morning I did smbpasswd as root and set it (to be sure) to same
passwd as the original one. But I don't think this matters anymore. I

/tmp is the most portable world-writable location.
as to hiding them with dot, i just don't see strong
justification for this.
