WINS Retention
How does one get rid of machines from the WINS database? They seem to hang around forever....and a restart doesn't solve it because the WINS data just gets passed around... Michael D. Black mblack@csihq.com http://www.csihq.com/ http://www.csihq.com/~mike 321-676-2923, x203 Melbourne FL

Delete dead browse lists
I've run into this problem a few times now and still haven't figured out how to fix it without shutting down my entire network. We get a lot of guest and transient computers belonging to different workgroups. The gleefully add themselves to the SAMBA domain master and the SAMBA master browse never gets rid of them. Isn't there some sort of timeout or interface where these can be

Daylight savings
I'm running 2.2.6 When daylight savings time changed this weekend I had to reset all samba sessions as the sessions didn't pick up the time change. Copying file from a Windows client to the server made the filetime off by one hour. Killing all the same sessions (also restarted smbd -- not sure if that was needed) fixed the problem. Michael D. Samba 3 smbstatus not as good
I use a lot of "force user" and "force group" directives on various shares. With smbstatus of Samba 2 I could always verify with a glance what uid and gid a particular service is being accessed as, with Samba 3 you can't. I'd REALLY like to see that come back to smbstatus. Here's a real world example of my complaint... Samba 2 smbstatus output... Samba version

Probably a bug in samba audit
Hi. I got this email-address from BUGS.txt file of the samba distribution. I read it carefully. I got configured and working samba, I work with samba above one year. I still have a problem, and, according to the samba log output, I think it's probably a bug. When I try to use the shares with audit support, I have my Far disconnected and telling me that something is wrong. I have that

Question on force user & log messages
I am running samba on HP-UX 10.20 with clients on Win95. I have two questions. Where can I get more information on the force user parameter? I am using it but am unable to get it to properly prompt for a password when mapping it. Next question deals with log messages in log.nmb. Where are these two messages coming from and how do I get rid of them? --IP address changed to XXX.XX.XX.XX

2.4.8
Any idea of a timeframe for a 2.4.8 ext3 patch release? I tried patching the 2.4.8 tree from ext3 CVS, but the kernel source files didn't end up nice enough to successfully compile. -- ___ ___ / _ | / _ \ Ari Pollak - ari@aripollak.com - www.aripollak.com / __ |/ ___/ /_/ |_/_/ NAVY: Never Again Volunteer Yourself

WINS unicast name restration storm
We recently migrated to an active directory controlled domain with the old linux pdc becoming just a member of the new domain. It previously had served as the WINS server. The WINS server settings update was missed on a few printers and these printers continued sending unicast name registration requests to the linux server. With over 300 requests per second being sent from these printers, it came

Ok, Im an idiot. Can't remount the ext3 filesystem because I deleted the /.jounral file...
Hello everyone, Ok, I admit it - I'm an idiot. But it seemed the right thing to do at the time.... I'm running RH 6.2 with a 2.2.19ext3 (ext3 0.0.7). I wanted to try out the new 2.4 kernel line, so I upgraded modutils, gcc and few other things.. Compiled the kernel (did NOT patch it to ext3) and installed it and rebooted. Well, it didn't understand ext3 fs.. Ok... Boot back into

Can't create new Xen domains using libvirt on CentOS 6.5
Hello, we have a strange problem on a fresh install of CentOS 6.5. On the server we want to use Xen to host paravirtualised guests (the system has no hardware virtualization support). To manage the domain we would like to use libvirt. Xen and libvirt are set up as described here: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Xen/Xen4QuickStart http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Xen/Xen4QuickStart/Xen4Libvirt When

Consider the following: % cat > gsh.c main() { system("/bin/sh"); } % cc -o gsh gsh.c % id uid=100(joe) gid=500(users) groups=14(floppy),15(sound) % chgrp sound gsh % chmod g+s gsh % mail abuser Subject: You owe me $5...
