File permissions problem - Visible Analyst
I have Samba 1.9.18p10 running on linux 2.0.35. It's being used
largely as a file server for student email, netscape bookmarks, Word
papers, etc. from Win95 clients. The configuration is pretty much the
defaults.
We have an application called Visible Analyst (VA) that needs to be
used by a few users. The bulk of the application files are shared but
a few need to be available at startup

How to sync /etc/smbpasswd with /etc/passwd ?
While we do sync our /etc/passwd whenever /etc/smbpasswd is changed via the
Samba sync option that does not seem to be possible the other way round:
I just want a /etc/smbpasswd generated from my /etc/passwd with the correct
passwords as used for the UniX login...
Is that possible ?

Strange behaviour with domain login
Hi there,
I have Samba 1.9.18p18 installed on Linux (S.u.S.E. 5.3). It
is configured to act as a domain controler for the Windoze
machines.
One of my users, which can login from his Win95 (plain text
password) without problems, wants to change his password
from the Control Panel. But every time when he logs out
after changing his password and re-logs in, the new password
is refused by the

Virtual CDROM for Unix?
Has anyone implemented a "virtual cdrom" facility as offered
on
windows? That is CD images are cached & compressed on hard
disk and shared across a network. See:
http://www.winmag.com/library/1996/1196/11r24a.htm
I have not found any news of a Unix solution. I would
like to offer one on a Linux server to Windows clients.
It should not be hard to implement with Samba...
Thanks

concerning econometrics usage of "R"
Hi,
I am currently looking for a program or programmng language easy to
learn, easier to operate on.I heva heard about "R", However I
understand that "R" is designed especially for statisticians. As an
economist, working on applied econometrics, I am not sure if it can
meet my needs.

printer drivers
Hello!
Where is info about printer drivers stored?
I mean that driver is installed for this printer?
I played with 2.2.0 configuration- remake srpm with
different options and after rpm installation I needed to install
printers
again and again- files are in place, but NT4 said that NO DRIVER :(
btw, sometimes I get error that alternate driver can't be installed when

Print filters when sending jobs to windows printer?
Well, I finally managed to setup samba printing... almost. smbprint
seems well and good... if you have a postscript printer, which I don't.
So, I just see stair-stepping, raw postscript on the win98 box printer
I'm sending to. I've configured magicfilter to handle postscript with
gs, but I'm having trouble integrating magicfilter with smbprint. I'm

Can't access Samba public directory from MS Windows
My Linux XP (hostname "isat", IP 192.168.1.8) is in the same workgroup
as my Microsoft PC running Windows 2003 (IP 192.168.1.7).
On my Linux host, I have a [public] section in the smb.conf file, as shown
at the end of this message.
When I typed the command
smbclient '\\isat\public'
the following message was displayed:
added interface ip=192.168.1.8 bcast=192.168.1.15

Disabling storeing of cached profiles?
Hello!
I know that this is not samba related, but may be some one knows a
quick answer:
When using profiles, stored on a well running samba-2.0.0beta2 PDC,
the NT PC's cache the profile during a user session. As this
profile is not deleted on the PC and we have a lot of users with only
few PC's we need a lot of diskspace for this old profiles.
Is there a way (Registry Key, ..) that

Synology shares not accessible...
Hi Travis,
I know, but this is now the released version (4.15.9-0919 beta >
4.15.9-0631), see the history page for SMB-Service:
https://www.synology.com/en-us/releaseNote/SMBService?model=DS918%2B#7_x_series
With the beta version it still works. But we can't stay on the beta
forever I think.

Synology shares not accessible...
The only way I have found to fix that is to enable the beta updates in
plugins and install the beta version of samba on the Synology.
Thank you,

Synology shares not accessible...
Hi Travis,
are you still there? ;-)
How are your Synos do? Do have in the mean time installed the actual
SMBService?
If you have and have with the actual SMBService the same problem as
before the Beta version there is a workaround:
In "/usr/local/packages/@appstore/SMBService/usr/lib/samba" you have to
change the "libidmap-samba4.so" to the one from the beta version,

getaddrinfo() problem with AIX 4.3.3 and rsync 2.5.2?
I had to apply the following patch to the clientname.c check_name() function
before I could successfully use "hosts allow" in rsyncd.conf. Without the
patch I kept getting "rsync: forward name lookup for ... failed: Host not
found"
errors. These errors were produced by the rsync daemon, and putting in a
debugging statement revealed that the port_buf being used had a large

Synology shares not accessible...
Hi,
to all of you which are using Synology NAS systems.
With SMB-Service 4.15.9-0631 no longer shares are accessible via domain
group rights from a Samba 4.17.7 domain.
It seems the same error described in the following mail trails:
"No longer access to shares after upgrade to 4.17.3"

fullscreen 3D leads to gnome panels rearranging
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior?
Today I ran some 3D demos, just for fun (from
http://www.vividimage.enta.net/electrome/) !!!
When the demo ends and gives me back a gnome desktop all my panels icons had
rearranged and ended up at the right hand corner in a tiny clump.
In windowed mode its fine just full screen.
Any ideas? Should I file a bug report or is this

Roaming Profiles Poledit
You can set the type of Profile by using the control Panal system
application to set the type to local.
Anyway this is probably not the main intention in handling profiles:
Aim:
1. Exclude some files like tmp or temporary internet file
2. Include desktop or personal
Therefore you can use (to exclude) the poledit: double click on the user
in poledit and as far as I remember under
