some shares in browselist not showing up in spite of browseable = yes
Hello,
In my smb.conf (or actually, in "committees.conf" included from smb.conf,
a defined share does not show up in the browselist, nor any other
share defined AFTER that particular one (either in that file or
in smb.conf after the include statement).
The shares are accessable though (when mapped to a drive letter or
used as UNC). Ofcourse I tried to look for odd

on-access virusscanning on shares
Is there anyone who has (successfully) implemented a method of
on-access virusscanning of files on a samba share?
For Linux, I only know of Sophos and McAfee virusscanners but neither
of them can scan files as they are written or read. Is there possibly
a hook of some sort in samba for this?
Michel.

Unwanted browselists
Is there a way to prevent browselists from machines other than those
of my choosing to show up in the browselists/network neighbourhood?
I don't want win95 clients that offer shares themselves to show up
in the network neighbourhood.
Michel.

Incomplete browselists with %G
When I build an smb.conf using a line like:
include = /usr/local/samba/lib/%G.conf
then it works beautifully for the shares that are listed in the
appropriate <primary group>.conf files, that is, I can connect to them
and all...
However, I can only _browse_ the shares listed in the main smb.conf
file, not the ones in the <primary group>.conf files that should
be included, even

Samba-related info on disconnected NT networkshares
The issue of disconnected networkshares (shares offered on an NT server) has
appeared on this mailinglist a few times. It is not a samba issue, but
it seems many here might benefit from the information given below anyways,
as I've never seen a solution to the problem come by.
Problem: Whenever there has not been any activity (file/network IO) to
or from a networkshare that is offered by an

Unwanted browse lists
Michel,
One approach that hasn't been suggested is to block access to the netbios
nameservice port on the samba host with a firewalling rule. That way the
other computers on the subnet can't register themselves with nmbd.
Suppose that your internal network is all within the 192.168.15.0/24
network. Each Windows workstation will automatically announce itself with
a udp packet broadcast

Nmbd crash with failure to open wins.tdb
Hello,
I've found this issue reported only once before but no real answer was
provided/found.
I am trying to migrate from an old 2.0.7 server, but the bundled
install 3.0.24 on FC6 is giving me major pain. Putting aside the
actual configuration and user migration which I need to figure out,
the problem is that nmbd refuses to start with the following errors in

SAMBA 3.0.22 unusual nmbd spawning
Hi,
we had upgraded our SAMBA PDC from 3.0.14 to 3.0.22 on a Gentoo system.
Now we have problems with peculiar spwaning of too many "nmbd" processes.
In smb.conf WINS support is activated, so I would expect two nmb
processes. But as you can see in the process list, during SAMBA is running
after some minutes another nmbd child is spawned. I tracked down the
problem to one example:

NMBD unresponsive
Hi there,
I have found a problem with my Samba server 3.0.28. This problem appeared suddenly without
any changes in configuration or server update.
NMBD becomes unresponsive in some minutes after startup with these options enabled:
name resolve order = wins lmhosts hosts
wins server = 172.25.8.86 172.25.8.84
Unresponsive means that it is not possible to connect to server,

SMBD - NMBD problem
Hi guys,
I realy need your help.
It looks like SMBD doesn't want to talk with NMBD, but why?
When I run the command: nmblookup torpc8
The result is:
querying torpc8 on 10.5.255.255
Got a positive name query response from 10.5.2.27 ( 10.5.2.27 )
10.5.2.27 torpc8<00>
That is correct.
When I run the command: smbclient -NL torpc8
The result is:

nmbd time-out with WINS server
Hi,
Problem: When our network has any glitches causing a network time-out
for more than a few
minutes, our samba servers lose their connectivity with our WINS server
even after the network is
restored. This causes the WINS server to tombstone the name
registration for the samba server(s),
thereby causing clients to not connect through the browser. SMB
connections are not affected so the

WINS server (nmbd) puzzle
My client Windows XP boxes are failing to register with my WINS server
(running nmbd from Samba). I'm puzzled how to figure out what I'm doing
wrong.
Background: I'm setting up BackupPC to back up my Windows clients using
rsync. I've installed cwRsync to the clients. BackupPC uses nmblookup to
find the client's IP address given its Windows NETBIOS name.

SMB/NMBD configuration troubles.
Folks,
I am stumped!
I have followed every tech tip I could find and I am still
unable to complete my SMB installation. Specifically, I fail
Test 4 and Tests 9 and 10. I believe the problem has
something to do with the NMBD configuration. Below are the
parameters of our system.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
