Samba server rejects (Win95) request
Hi,
I am new to Linux, I am using RedHat version 6.0 and Samba 2.0.5a. I try to
set up a Samba Server for a LAN.
So far everything (i.e. installation) worked fine, I installed samba from
.rpm and nmbd, smbd is started at boot successfully. I can see the Samba
server in the Windows95 network environment, but when I doubleclick on it
or when I try to smbmount a service from another Linux machine I

smbmount and smb_dont_catch_keepalive
Hi!
I am experiencing strange smbmount problems with my 3 computers.
I have:
janeway, an NT 4.0 SP5 box,
torres, a Linux box running kernel 2.0.36 and samba 2.0.5a,
q, a Linux box running kernel 2.0.36.
Both Linux machines have smbfs compiled as a module and loaded.
I can smbmount janeway shares on both torres and q, and I can see
torres shares on janeway. Naturally, q can't be seen by

Errors in /var/log/messages and "dmesg"
A friend of mine is running Samba (samba-2.0.3-8) on a couple RedHat Linux
6.0 machines. He is sharing files bilaterally at work with a WinNT
machine and at home with a Win9x machine.
In both places, he is getting a large number of SMB error messages. I'm
not sure whether these are from the smbfs (smbmount) or from the Windoze
machines accessing the Linux drives, though I suspect the

Can't sometimes mount smbfs
Hi!
I am using smbfs to mount a NT 4.0 SP3 disk to a Linux 2.0.33 box
(SuSE 5.1). This works most of the time. Sometimes, I get a syslog
entry
|Jun 26 23:03:10 palandt kernel: smb_dont_catch_keepalive: server->data_ready == NULL
on the smbmount command, which subsequently fails "illegal parameter".
What am I doing wrong?
I currently can't browse the digest archives because my

can't smbmount samba share
Hi!
I have a new machine on a network:
kemmer: New Linux box (kernel 2.0.36. Samba 1.9.18p10)
torres: old Linux box (kernel 2.0.36. Samba 1.9.18p10)
janeway: Windows NT 4.0 SP4.
torres and janeway are performing flawlessly, I can access both
machine's shares from the other one.
kemmer is new and can't access DNS yet. Thus, I have to use the -I
switch to smbclient and smbmount to access

Then once I accidentally used my UNIX password, and it works. O?O

Can someone tell me where to find what error messages mean or enlighten

Samba replacing NFS
Hi,
I have a number of web servers that mount their /htdocs (and /log and
/cgi-bin) directories from a large file server. I am currently using NFS
for this. The web servers are Linux, the file server a Sun E450. NFS seems
dreadfully slow, and I keep reading about how it doesn't do file locking.
Is there a good reason not to simply use samba, and share the volumes with
samba from the Sun, and

Refusing password from win95 client
This is surely in a FAQ somewhere, but I can't find it.
Latest ver. of samba on RH Linux 5.0, encrypt. passwds.
My Win95 clients were happy. Then I used poledit to turn off password
caching and now they are not happy. The problem is that they can't connect
to their home directories. Guest shares are fine, and other shares that
require passwords are fine, but when you connect to your home

Slow writes continued
I posted a while back about getting very slow writes. People suggested
modifying (increasing) SO_SNDBUF and SO_RCVBUF and this actually helps
enormously. However, there is obviously something still not right. Writes
are still about 1/2 the speed of reads. This only seems to affect Win95
clients (NT machines are fine). Doing a write of a 20mb file to the server
generates the following message:

folders with veto files not being deleted
Hi,
I am running the latest Samba (p8) on Solaris 2.6. The PC clients are
running win95 OSR2. I am using encrypted passwords.
I have some files vetoed:
veto files = /.rssrc/.desktop/
I'm not using 'hide dot files'.
If I have a folder with one file in, and that file is a vetoed file, I
cannot delete the folder. I have unix permissions to delete both. The
windows error message is:

Very slow writes to Samba server
Hi,
I'm using the latest samba with encrypted passwords, on a RedHat 5.0 linux
box. I'm using a compiled version of samba rather than an RPM.
Writing to the server from a win95 machine is VERY slow. 50Mb files take
10+ minutes to write. Reading from the server is as fast as normal. All the
hardware involved (server, network, client) is very fast an underused, so I
don't think

passwd chat string for Solaris 2.6?
I've been playing with this for hours and not worked it out. Has anyone got
a passwd chat string that works with Solaris 2.6 or something near it? I
turned on debugging, but after wading through the megabytes of output, I
still see little if any correlation between changes to the passwd chat
string and lines appearing in the log.
So can someone be nice and send me something?
Thanks.
