Compatibility of external C code across platforms
A package I have written makes considerable use of external C code. There appear to be no problems building a Windows binary with the GNU C compiler, but now I would like to make the package available for other platforms. A stringent check of the code with the gcc options '-Wall -pedantic' flags many nested functions and variable-length arrays that are not allowed in ISO C. Is it

Sweaving quotes
The significance code line to summary() applied to an lm() fitted model
object is
Signif. codes: 0 ?***? 0.001 ?**? 0.01 ?*? 0.05 ?.? 0.1 ? ? 1
The corresponding line in the LaTeX source produced by Sweave is
Signif. codes: 0 ?***? 0.001 ?**? 0.01 ?*? 0.05 ?.? 0.1 ? ? 1
which looks the same in my email (Thunderbird on a Vista machine), but
when I look at the file in WinEdt the quotes

Extracting formula from an lm object
I want to extra the part of the formula not including the response
variable from an lm object. For example if the lm object ABx.lm was
created by the call
ABx.lm <- lm( y ~ A + B + x, ...)
Then ACx.lm is saved as part of a workspace.
I wish to extract "~ A + B + x". Later in my code I will fit another
linear model of the form z ~ A + B + x for some other response variable z.

How do you stop R from putting up a dialog box when you quit Rgui?
(I use Windows and I never save workspaces that way)

likelihood and score interval estimates for glms
G'day list!
I'm thinking about programming likelihood and score intervals for
generalized linear models in R based on the paper "On the computation of
likelihood ratio and score test based confidence intervals in
generalized linear models" by Juha Alho (1992) (Statistics in Medicine,
11, 923-930).
Being lazy, I thought that I would ask if anyone else on the list has

Can some kind person point out my error here? I'm trying to set up a

step() and stepAIC()
The birth weight example from ?stepAIC in package MASS runs well as
indeed it should.
However when I change stepAIC() calls to step() calls I get warning
messages that I don't understand, although the output is similar.
Warning messages:
1: In model.response(m, "numeric") :
using type="numeric" with a factor response will be ignored
(and three more the same.)

Recommended Packages
Having just update to R 2.6.2 on my old Windows laptop I notice that the
number of packages is growing exponentially and my usual approach of
get-em-all may not be viable much longer. Has any thought been given to
dividing "contributed" binaries into a recommended set, perhaps a couple
of hundred, and the remained. That way one could install the recommended
ones routinely and add in

How do I coerce numeric factor columns of data frame to vector?
I have just noticed that quite a few columns of a data frame that I am
working on are numeric factors. For summary() purposes I want them to be
vectors. I tried, for example
> indx <- c(1:18,21:37,40,41)
> i <- 0
> i <- i+1
> summary(as.vector(sflows1[indx[i]]))

Problem with logtrans, from library MASS
Greetings all!
This problem occurs using R 1.8.1 on Windows XP. I downloaded the
binaries for R and all packages, including the VR bundle, in December 2003.
The data consists of NZ$ prices and attributes for 643 cars.

R-project [.com?] [.net?]
I got a shock a few days ago when I accidentally visited
www.r-project.com . I thought that the r-project site had been hacked
until I realised my mistake. There is also a site www.r-project.net.
Both of these sites appear to be Japanese. Does anyone know anything
about them? I suppose that it is not unusual for names close to those of
popular sites to be used. It is good that they use a

Plotting lm() attributes
Suppose you fit a linear model
> model.1 ~ lm(v1 ~ ..., data=myframe)
and v2 is some other column of myframe typically not in the model. You
will often want to try
> plot(v2, model.1$residuals)
but this will fail if there are NAs in the response v1 as
model.1$residuals has length equal to the number of nonmissing values in

Interlacing two vectors
I want to interlace two vectors. This I can do:
> x <- 1:4
> z <- x+0.5
> as.vector(t(cbind(x,z)))

but this seems rather inelegant. Any suggestions?
