empirical (sandwich) SE estimate in lme ()?
Is it possible to get the empirical (sandwich) S.E. estimates for the
fixed effects in lme () (thus allowing possibly correlated errors within
the group)? In SAS you can get it by the 'empirical' option to PROC MIXED.
Cheers,
Michael

Are there binary for Caldera linux?
Hi there,
Is there a binary-file installation of R-1.2.3 for Caldera Linux?
I have Caldera Linux 2.3. The linux binary installation files at
CRAN seems to be for Red Hat Linux only. Is there a way to make
the Red Hat linux binary work for Caldera linux? I have tried and
has no success so far.
Thanks.

X11 forwarding between from Mandrake(sshd) to Caldera(ssh) doesn't work!
I am having great difficulty getting X11 forwarding to work between
my openssh server (Linux Mandrake 6.1) and my openssh client (Caldera
OpenLinux 2.x).
I get "X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication." on
the Caldera box when I ssh into the Mandrake box and try to run any X
app.
If I make the Caldera box the server all is fine and works perfectly.

Minor flaw in Caldera OpenLinux 1.2
(I almost didn''t post this cause I hope you would notice it immediately
after installing the OS... It''s here for the people that don''t/won''t use
Caldera OpenLinux 1.2 )
Hello to all!
By default, Caldera OpenLinux 1.2 adds the currrent working directory to
the end of the $PATH on login. This of course gives a normal user the
possibility of gaining a root shell

problems running samba on Caldera 2.3?
I have the default installation of samba (2.0.5) that came with Caldera OL
2.3, but it doesn't seem to be starting up properly, nor is SWAT working.
When I run the script 'samba start', I get the message "Starting samba:
smbd nmbd", but when I check the running processes, only nmbd shows up.
Running smbstatus gives me the message "Couldn't open status file

If a move toward machine-independent representation seems reasonable,
it may be worth looking at some of the binary data exchange formats

Compiling R under Caldera Open Linux 2.2 (PR#268)
Thanks for your help. I loaded XFree86-devel-3.3.3.1-3.i386.rpm from my
OpenLinux CD and as you indicate this solved by X11 include file
problem.
I then encountered the linking same problem as you describe below. The
error message is saying that the compiler can't find the libg2c library,
which is its runtime library. Apparently the g77 supplied by Caldera is
missing this important piece.

Evaluating args in a function
Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong here:

[1] "data.frame"

Error in test.fn(fred) : promise already under evaluation: recursive
default argument reference or earlier problems?

documentation for 'open': some clarification?
I'm been doing more and more of file text parsing inside R instead of
coping with Perl. For that, I need open a file and read it line-by-line.
I found the documentation for 'open' isn't very clear.
Right now it has
,----[ *help(R)[open]* ]
| 'open' opens a connection. In general functions using connections
| will open them if they are not open, but then close them

Symlinks followed literally in Debian 3.0, not in Red Hat 7.3
After receiving requests to post answers to this query,
I figured I'd resubscribe to let people know that there is,
in fact, a way around this. When I upgraded johnboy to Linux
kernel version 2.6.10, all the formerly problematic symlinks
worked. Apparently, the 2.6.10 kernel fixed some issues in
the smbfs code relating to symlinks (thanks to Ted McManus for
pointing this out to me). So if

Memory allocation
I am trying to work with 75 affymetrix U133plus2 chips and am running into
memory allocation errors when trying to merge or convert probe level data to
expression values.
I keep getting - Error: cannot allocate vector of size 561011 Kb and that is
simply with a data subset.
Is there a way around this limitation?

Compiling R in Caldera Linux
I am new to Linux and its ways, and so I am having a bit of trouble compiling R.
The system I am using is Caldera Open Linux 2.4. I have egcs and g77 version
2.91.66 installed and they seem to work fine. When I try to run the
configure script for R, it quits at the test of g77 with an error "Can't find
-lg2c".
Does this error mean I am missing a library, and if so, which one?
