question about passwords when logging in
Hello Fellow SambaUsers, Just wondering if anyone can help me w/ a question about logging in and password protection. Using Win-NT 4.0 and Win 98, I'm unable to set passwords for a particular samba server (on unix solaris). The only way I can get it to work is if I make the server wide-open for everyone where it does NOT prompt for a password. Here's the [global] section of my

Accessing shares through XP on an NT4 domain
Hello! I have a Mandrake 9.1 box running Samba 2.2.7 (not ready to upgrade yet). Using both Swat and vim-ing the smb.conf file (and restarting after every change, just to see), I've finally gotten back to where I was yesterday, which is for my XP computer to be able to see the Mandrake box. Problem is, I have to type in the IP address of the box. For whatever reason, it doesn't show up

Samba and NT4 SP3: no write access
Hi everybody! I'm an absolute Linux newbie and I've got some problems with my LAN. I've got two machines at home. On the one machine is Win98/SuSE Linux 6.1 and on the other is Win NT4 SP3. My network from Win98 to Win NT is perfect. Both machines have the function of a file server, that means that I can use the Win NT harddisk from the Win98 machine and the other way round. No

NT4 domain: users not found
Hi all; ... trying to get a samba setup running atop debian gnu/linux, I am stuck in a strange situation: I set up the samba box to be part of a Windows NT 4 domain, did a net join (which obviously worked, at least a computer account on the PDC was created) and configured the machine to see the domain user accounts (wbinfo -u and wbinfo -g are working, same as there are domain users listed while

FW: Access Denied
I just realized that I have been trying this from only one other machine and maybe it was something to do with NT. I tried to mount from a Win 95 machine and it works just fine. I guess it's the NT authentication problem. Do I need to be Administrator on the NT box if I point my SAMBA box to the NT box for authentication? Thank you, Paul- ---------- From: "Paul Woods"

Using Amanda + Samba to backup NT4 servers?
Hi all, Has anyone used amanda in combination with samba to back up an NT4 server system? I'm able to connect to the server with both smbclient and smbtar on the command line, but I can't get amanda to connect. Supposedly amanda uses smbclient and smbtar to perform the backups. I'm continually getting the following error from amcheck: ERROR: amanda: [PC SHARE //servername/share

Issues with Joining an NT4 Domain
Hello I'm having some dificulties joining my Samba 3.0alpha (and 2.2.7a) machine to my NT4 domain. Let me tell you what I'm attempting to accomplish. I want to setup the Samba system to authenticate to my NT domain so that I can use NTLM Proxy authentication with SQUID. Through reading the docs, I'm under the impression that in order to allow thre SQUID/Samba setup to auth on

Problem in Win95/98 Find Computer
Dear all: I used the samba-2.0.6 under Red Hat 5.2 for a period of time. (I used samba server, not client.) It works fine. Recently, I found one strange problem when I use "Find Computer" from MS-Windows 98. I hope someone could help me to solve this problem. ----> Samba Server got a user (user1) with a password (pass1) (Both /etc/passwd and /etc/smbpasswd used this username and

browser problem
The browsing capability in Network Neighborhood disppears periodically. Usually, double-clicking on Network Neighborhood gives us a list of all the NT and Unix/samba boxes on the network segment (i.e. in the Workgroup). When browsing disppears, all we see is *Entire Network*, which has nothing in it. We run a unix/NT network with 6 unix servers and about 80 NT clients. We are running NT

"predict"-fuction for metaMDS (vegan)
Dear r-Community, Step1: I would like to calculate a NMDS (package vegan, function metaMDS) with species data. Step2: Then I want to plot environmental variables over it, using function envfit. The Problem: One of these environmental variables is cos(EXPOSURE). But for flat releves there is no exposure. The value is missing and I can't call it 0 as 0 stands for east and west. Therefore I

After reIP, Samba hosts not browsable.
Hey folks, We recently reIP'ed our main office LAN. Ever since this was done, none of our Samba hosts are browsable via Network Neighborhood. While they are still availible via Start -> Run -> \\servername, it's an annoying inconvenience. Stats: * PDC and BDC are NT domain controllers * Samba hosts are running several versions of Samba, from the later 2.0.* releases,

Hi... We are still using NT4 classic domain with a couple of samba server but want to upgrade step by step to AD as a distant goal. We tried to upgrade to samba 4.17.7 as in intermediate step and keep LDAP for now but fail as we could not find a suitable example for id mapping. Hope someone can help! Domain name contains '(' and ')'
I am using NT Server as my PDC, and Samba 2.2.5 as my file server. The Samba joined a domain called "DM(CN)" successfully and see in the network neighborhood. When I click on the Samba, it ask me username and password. Using the same configuration, I try to join another domain called "DM_CN", it works fine. Do samba support domain name contains '(' or ')'?
