determining domain master and forcing elections?
Every now and then one of my lusers sets up a machine which attempts to be a local master and/or a domain master for our workgroup. This sucks since we want our samba machine to *always* be the WINS master server. (we have os level set to 255 for this machine) but appearantly it still loses elections that come up from time to time. The only way I know when this happens is when people come to me

ARGH... once again samba causes "permission" errors. SOLVED
Ok, I was able to fix both of my problems and they are both related to SELinux problems First: I am assuming that you are like me and that you have an excellent background in systems administration (I teach it at a university for a living.) So you've configured chmod permissions and chown user and group ownerships on directories and files to correctly allow the desired access. You have

ARGH... once again samba causes "permission" errors.
I've been doing unix sys. admin for nearly 20 years and yet EVERY single time I have to setup samba I have configuration problems. Before we start let's clear up some common misunderstandings: I have googled for the answer. I have spent the last six hours doing so and trying various "suggestions". Most of these suggestions point to solutions involving chown or chmod. These are

Samba 3.6.1 losing browser elections to WinXP
Hello Samba; I am aware this was a problem years ago... This week I turned up a brand new server to replace an embarrassingly old one. The problem has re-occurred. I expected this to be a problem long ago fixed. I have made the following registry edit to the offending XP machine and restarted Samba. I hope it sticks. I have two questions: 1) Have I missed something in the configuration?

Samba WINS Server losing all elections against
Hello everybody. I've been trying for weeks to find a solution for my problem, but since I couldn't find anything, here I am. I manage a network of about 200 PCs, 90% windows XP and Vista, 10% linux. A samba server is located on the main server, acting as a WINS server, to manage the list of connected computers. However, when a resident computer is badly configured (ie no wins server

Finding ties in data (be)for(e) BradleyTerry
Dear all, I have carried out a pairwise comparison study that I want to analyze using the BradleyTerry package to establish a rank order of my stimuli. However, BT does not handle ties between stimuli, so I need to find those in my data before I can use that model. The code below goes from the format of my result file(s) to a data frame suitable for BT, but as you can see, there are some ties. I

302 Redirect + XMLHttpRequest = ARGH!!1
I''ve looked at various sources for how to handle 302 redirects but they all seem to be fundamentally flawed, ie don''t work at all. I''ve writted a much more verbose writeup of my problems on my blog and rather than repeat that here just go there. http://height1percent.com/articles/2006/04/10/http-302-redirects-xmlhttprequests-argh-1 Thanks -- Posted via

argh!!!! database nightmares!
Please help! I'm currently running samba 2.2.2 on a redhat 7.1 computer. I'm having major database problems with any database that I try to store on my samba server. The programs are quickbooks, act, and access. Basically, all of my index files keep getting really hosed. I have to repair and rebuild files everyday. This is bad especially since this client is a recent convert from NT to

argh .. if/else .. why?
Hello, would someone please help explain the following inconsistency in the if/else statement to me? The format of the if/else #3 below is ok, but if/else #1 is not? (I get an "unexpected else" type error.) In order for it to work I have to use if/else #2 Thanks .. maybe there is some reason for this, but this looks very inconsistent to me. When and how often are elections held for LMB?
Can someone clarify this for me? The docs are not clear. It seems that an election is held when: * There is no LMB or the current LMB shuts down. * A machine joins the network with "preferred master = yes" and forces an election. Any other times when an election is held? What's also not clear is how OFTEN the election is held. The how-to makes a passing reference that "two

bug: inconsistent handling of workgroups > 15 chars leads to failed master browser elections
hi, when i give samba a workgroup name with more than 15 characters [the limit for netbios names], nmbd is unable to participate in browse master elections. it appears that parts of internal samba code honor 16 characters and parts only honor 15. details: i used a workgroup name of nodomain.nowhere, 16 characters, on samba 2.2.1a. the samba box was the only member of this workgroup on the
