ACK's overhead
Good day time!
We've noticed the following issue with Samba 3.0.1 on Linux. When SMB client
asks for the first time on FID for a locking or read request on an opened
file, it causes an ACK to be sent from client side. Windows server also
requests ACK BUT much more rarely.
Sending ACK causes additional overhead when working in heavy locking and
unlocking environment. Windows server

DHCP static hosts and subnet configuration
Hi all.
I have set up a DHCP server with multiple subnet configurations (let's
say subnet A and B). Within that I have declared pools and static
hosts addresses.
Now, if I have set up a static host entry (with fixed-address) in
Subnet B for a specific machine and try to connect to Subnet A with
that NIC (where it should obtain an address from the range), this does
not work unless I add a

VPN through BSD for Win2k, totally baffled
Scenario:
FreeBSD box running IPFW acting as a gateway to private network. The private
network is made up of entirely routeable IP addresses. External users
running Win2k and XP on DSL connections with dynamic IPs.
Goal:
To have the FreeBSD gateway securely authenticate and encrypt the traffic
between the outside users and the internal network.

iptables on samba in AD native
Hello Samba group,
I have setup iptables on a Samba-3.0.8 member server (with one IP) in
a native mode Active Directory domain.
Searching Samba list archives directs me to read
http;//www.netfilter.org documentation and doesn't attempt to describe
ports needed for samba to function as a member server in native AD.
I would appreciate any constructive feedback regarding whether these

ACL in Linux and AIX
Hi,
As I can see in the last mailing list I am not the only one to get problems
with ACL support in Linux.
Whatever the samba version (2.2.4, 2.2.5) the main problem is how acl and
extended attributes can be implemented fine in linux.
I've installed samba on AIX systems where acl is implemented (native) and NT
ACL works fine at each time (the only difficulty there is that nsswitch is

Crash shortly after importing pool
Looks like my main data pool is borked. I''ve got one essentially current
backup, and one older backup, plus the photos are mostly backed up on
archival optical disks, so this isn''t as disastrous as it might be, but
still, recovering several hundred gigabytes on home equipment is a pain.
Hence I''d prefer to recover the pool if that''s reasonably possible.

predictable bit patterns in runif(n) shortly after set.seed
Mersenne Twister generator is known to be sensitive to the
algorithm used to generate its initial state. The initialization
used in R generates the initial state in a way, which leaves
linear dependencies mod 2 among the bits in the initial state.
Since Mersenne Twister performs only operations, which are
linear mod 2, these dependencies propagate to the output sequence.

System Shutting Down Shortly After Boot, COMMBAD, "Writing Error", "Data Receiving Error"
I've been having a problem with my system during boot, which results in a
upsd/upsmon COMMBAD event shutting the system down shortly after it is
started. The shutdown is dependent upon the number of processes started at
boot time, and their load. Fewer processes and lighter load, and there is
no shutdown. More processes and heavy load cause upsd/upsmon to shut the
system down shortly after

Hi Chandler,
What changes are you planning to make?
Are you going to submit a proposal and RFC?

newhidups driver process crashed shortly after upsd loads
I'm using an APC Back-UPS XS with nut 2.0.3. I've recompiled/reinstalled the
source, and switched over to the newhidups driver (instead of the old hidups
driver).
I modified by ups.conf to use newhidups.
The hotplug files were not automatically installed, I had to copy those from
the scripts directory to my hotplug/usb directory.
The newhidups driver loads find and then works for a

eve online crashing shortly after takeoff
Hi all, I've got a strange problem with wine and eve-online. Eve loads up, lets me login and choose character, but freezes 10-15 seconds after that, pegging the cpu at 99% until I kill the process. Anybody have any ideas what causes that? Wall of text to follow, and am happy to post any more info needed. Thanks!

[LLVMdev] Heads up: Pass Manager changes will be starting shortly
I just wanted to give everyone a head up. I'm starting work on the pass
manager based on numerous list discussions and some IRC discussions.
The first steps will be marking the existing code as "legacy" and clearing
a path to build new facilities here. From there I'll start building the new
facilities without enabling them.
Some explicit legacy support goals:
1) I'm going
