Locks & permissions on shares
We have a requirement here to set up what we call a "shared area". This is nothing more than a directory on a Unix server (Digital Unix) that allows a group of users read and write access to the directory. The shared area needs to be accessible from Win95 clients. A big restriction that we want is: - when a user opens a file, others should not be able to write to that file. So, the

Invalid snum errors (fwd)
Ok, I'm a dumb-ass today. I failed to see the "available = no" in the service entry. Sorry for wasting your time. Browse lists from other workgroups across subnets
I have problems to get browse lists from other workgroups across subnets. On win95 network neighbourhood I have a complete list form all computers in the same workgroup (including computers located on an other subnet) and a workgroup list. But if I try to look at the computers on an other workgroup I get an error message: workgroup not available. The subnet has an samba server (2.0.3) configured

prevent workgroups from appearing in browse list
Hi, I have a samba 2.2.1a (cvs-06.08.2001) running as PDC for my domain, and it is doing fine. But in the broadcast domain there are severeal other workgroups (no domains) with their own Domain Master Browsers. Additionaly there are always a lot of unconfigured computers not under my control, which build their own workgroups (e.g. mdkhome, workgroup...). My problem is now, how do I prevent all

2 servers won't sync browse lists accross network
We've got two samba servers either side of a modem link and I'm trying to get them to sync browse lists. Using remote sync and friends the servers try and sync but invariably each time one does the other end rejects the `browse sync sessionsetup' i.e. sync_with_lmb: Initiating sync with local master browser BOX1<0x20> at IP 192.168.1.2 for workgroup WORKGROUP 04/06/1998

Multiple workgroups : Multiple Subnets
I am still trying to make samba work over a WAN with multiple workgroups although I am just about to throw in the towel. I had hoped to find a solution that would permit a Windows PC to browse a (MS) workgroup (ie retrieve the browse list from the workgroup master browser for a remote (MS) workgroup when that MB is NOT a samba server). Since WINS only provides the broadcast address of the remote

diskless windows
Hi. I wanted to set diskless win95 but I read the list archives and I decided not to do it diskless. So I tried diskless windows but I got a problem. I do this. 1.- I did booting images with bootware proms. 2.- I managed to install DOS clients from microsoft. That was painfull because the one I downloaded from MS didn't connected to my samba server. I used a dos clients that creates a NT

Netlogon share and locking
Rob, I hope you have referred to the example smb.conf file. We really cut our teeth on some of the example config settings. It is IMPERATIVE that nothing in the NETLOGON share should become locked - this breaks the logon process very badly! Some Win95 clients will always hang on logon if any files end up being locked in the netlogon share. For the record, here is an extract from

Windows 95 logon problems - HELP!
Hello all, We seems to have a bit of a problem with Windows 95 machines logging on to our network. I hope someone can shed some light on this. Current configuration: 2 servers. Once handles authentication and application serving while the other provides home directory services only. We have about 150 Windows 95 clients. The two servers are DEC Alpha 2100A and DEC Alpha 2000. Both are

Problem executing logon script - PLEASE HELP!
My Win95 clients are having intermittent problems running the logon script. I am running Samba 1.9.17alpha5 on DEC Unix 3.2G. In the client's log file (under logs/), I receive this message: Share violation on file (1,1,0,9375,kix/logon.bat) = 0 Now, I've tried the various options reaging locking, but the problems still persist. Relevant options from smb.conf: [global] logon

determining domain master and forcing elections?
Every now and then one of my lusers sets up a machine which attempts to be a local master and/or a domain master for our workgroup. This sucks since we want our samba machine to *always* be the WINS master server. (we have os level set to 255 for this machine) but appearantly it still loses elections that come up from time to time. The only way I know when this happens is when people come to me

Removing stale host/workgroups in browse lists
I've got a moderate network with several subnets, a number of domains and workgroups. I have a central WINS server, each domain has its own PDC. My problem is transient users. We have occasional users who plug a laptop into the network. Once they leave, they hang around in Network Neighborhood forever. Then I have users who curiously click on their icon in NN and their machine just

Problem with sending messages (smbclient -M ...)
Hi I use messages (net send...., smbclient -M ....) to let a server dial to my provider, or to let him fetch my mial. This worked until I switched to 1.9.18p3. My server is named FGP, my group FGP_GROUP. One of the nt-clients is named SAUSCHNELL - and one of the users on SAUSCHNELL is names fgp - like the server. Since I use 1.9.18p3 all the messages sent to FGP from a NT-computer are actually

remote subnet browsing and NT4.0SP3
Hello, I have a samba 1.9.18p4 server running as a domain master browser on a subnet, with some clients distributed on other subnets. If there are only Win 95 clients on a subnet, browse sync works - but not if there are Win NT 4.0 SP3 machines on that subnet. Error from nmdb (at log level 3): sync_with_lmb: Initiating sync with local master browser MAILHEIDELBERG<0x20> at IP
