Domain unavaliable
First off, I'd like to give all the people involved
with the development of Samba a big thanks. I'd have
to say that Samba is probably the single most important
piece of software that we run in our research lab.
I'd also like to say that I have had so few problems that
I probably haven't written about one in 3 years.
With that being said, I'm having problems with my

Is it my networking?
I've used samba for the better part of 4 years now.
Never had any real problems that were not easily
resolved. Samba has become the single most important
piece of software in our lab. It has reduced my
administrative headaches considerably.
However, now I have a real problem that I have no clue
on. I'm running a Samba 2.2.8a PDC on Sun Solaris. About
2 months ago, we moved our lab from

How does one change a passwd with Samba
How does a Window's user change thier password on a Unix based
Samba server. I know they can login to the unix box and use smbpasswd(8).
But these users are MS Windows users and I hate to have to explain what
a command prompt looks like.
Unfortunately I don't know enough Windows. Is there such a client
feature built into the Windows, how do they do it against a PDC?
If no solution is

No subject
We are looking for another solution besides Samba, which will allow our
application developers using Windows 95/98/NT to access share on our Sun Box
running Solaris 2.6 operating systems. Our supervisor feels the Samba
installation process is more complex than what we really need.
Any suggestions?

authentication failure
Hi,
I've just installed Samba 2.0.3 and now I'm getting following error:
PAM_pwdb[306]: 1 authentication failure; (uid=0) -> andreas for samba service
I can connect to all shares and printers, but get the error.
I suppose it has something to do with the passwords (I'm trying to sync Samba
and Linux passwords).
Any ideas?

Changing Windows passwords
Hi all,
Is there a way to use the "encrypt passwords" and the "passwd chat" programs
simultaneously? smb.conf(5) doesn't mention anything about them being
mutually exclusive, yet when I run testparm on the smb.conf file, I get:
ERROR: the 'passwd chat' script [...] expects to use the old
plaintext password via the %o substitution. With encrypted

Client frequent disconnection + strange logs
Hello,
Although I've been using samba for years at my customers
office, I recently moved one on a HP E60 server running
RedHat 6.2.
The samba version is 2.0.6, untouched from the distribution.
They use a (weird) accounting software built on the top of
FoxPro, requiring a *huge* amount of open files. I accordingly
raised the values for files-nr and inode-nr and the stats seem
ok.
They have

Bulk smbcacls calls
I want to get ACLs (output similar to that of smbcacls) for a *lot* of
files (potentially millions). I can only process about 10 files per
second when running the command (`smbcacls -U ...` via a Python
wrapper), I'm looking for a faster way.
Does anyone know any libraries or other commands that could help me?
Failing that, I assume that much of the time taken is spent on

Adobe Photoshop problem with saving on Samba shares
We are experiencing problems with Adobe Photoshop and Samba, all
versions up to 2.0.6. We run Samba off Compaq Alphaservers (ie 64 bit).
Symptoms:
1) On doing a "Save As" in Photoshop, we intermittently get:
"Could not save as F:\<filename> because the file is already in
use or was left open".
A zero length file is left on the Samba share.
2) Problem only

Any update on Belkin F6H350 UNV support?
This model is available in AU/NZ and can work as USB or serial. It uses
the cutdown Bulldog software that comes with the cheaper serial based
belkin models, and they don't officially support the USB mode under Linux.
Anyone managed to get this working with NUT using either serial or USB?
I'd really like to get the extra functionality of the NUT tools vs the
very simple setup of the

dptr_create: returned 9: Error - all new dirptrs in use ?
Hi,
I get this error message in the log for a Win98 client which is regularly
scanning a directory on the share. When this happens the client no longer
can access any data in the shares (security=share), only the toplevel
directory structure of a share is still accessible. This seems to be a new
problem in 2.0.5/6pre (not sure if it already happened for 2.0.4). Any hints?
Franz.

Easy way to debug code
Hi,
Trying to write a generic function to deal with either arrays or strings.
Here''s a cutdown version of what I''m writing highlighting the problem I
have.
All i''m trying to do is take ''server1.testing.com'' from the variable
$server (the variable being either a string or an array) and assign it to
$bar, or assign

Samba_dlz: canceling trasaction on zone domain
Hey Rowland,
Below is a cutdown version of my DHCP. As you can see, I haven't really set anything up for ddns-update. While using Samba4's internal DNS I had the setting 'ddns-update-style interim;' and it seemed to have worked fine. But with bind I'm not sure what else is needed.
Thanks for taking a look at it.

User Level Security and PDC
So, I have this Samba PDC setup, and it's gotten to
the point where a good number of my Win2K and WinXP
boxes refuse to acknowledge that the PDC exists.
If I logon to the Win boxes on a local account, and
go to the run dialog and type \\mymachine, it prompts
me for a username and password. I can then see my shares.
If I logoff the local account and try and logon to
the domain, I get

Thanks a lot. I'll take a read through it and see if I can get it working.

Samba_dlz: canceling trasaction on zone domain
Hi there,
I'm in the process of switching from using Samba4 internal DNS to using BIND as my backend DNS. However, I'm currently running into some issues with the transition.
Here's an example of the messages I'm getting from /var/log/messages logs:
Nov 9 15:34:26 pho-dcpvl-01N named[27524]: samba_dlz: starting transaction on zone DOMAIN

RE SMS and SQL
Hi TOm,
I know it this doesn't really help your SMS problem, but it does help SQL.
Oracle just accounced support for Linux and they said they are going to
release a free version of ORACLE for Linux.
