/etc/passwd - Domain Controller Synchronization
Hello, I don't know much about Samba so forgive me if this is a stupid question. I'm currently working on a project for a client that relies on Unix machines for their main applications. Access to Unix applications is done through terminal emulation (vt 100) on Windows PCs. We are implementing a Windows NT network for file an print sharing and to support SMS. One of the goals of the

NT domain logon questions
Hi. Myself and a anti-Micro$oft companion tried to get NT domain logons working yesterday and seem pretty close, but not quite. Samba is 1.9.18alpha3, server is an Ultra-2 running SunOS 5.5.1. Encrypted passwords seem to be working, a la smbclient and mostly from NT, "mostly" because it *seemed* to be working but we did have some problems with home directories in smbpasswd changing

Problem with 1.9.18p1 and password server
In version 1.9.17.p2, a password server line in smb.conf could contain multiple server entries and if a username/password combination failed to validate on one server it would try against the next one until it got a match. Even if the account existed on the first server that was tried, and the password failed, then the subsequent server would be tried. We liked this feature as we have users on

Server string in Network Neighbourhood
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is the string that appears in browser lists restricted to being a single string without spaces, or can you include spaces ? I have samba v1.9.15p8 running on a SGI O2 system, and I'm accessing its filesystems from a W95 PC. I started off with the following line in my /etc/init.d/samba script NMBD_OPTS="-C11th Floor SGI O2" which results in

UMASK Problems
I have quite a problem with the new SAMBA version(s) ( both 1.9.17 and 1.9.17 p2). When creating a directory in a samba-mounted unix file system the create mask entry will be ignored. I tried a lot (changing umasks on the unix boxes (SunOS/Solaris), changing the create mask entry to a many different values) but nothing happens at all. Every directory will be created with the permissions of 755.

Why \pipe\MKSPipe ?
I've got Source Integrity installed on our network and at least one person is having a problem checking files in. A tcpdump shows that the client is trying to open \pipe\MKSPipe (MKS is the Source Integrity Manufacturer). SAMBA (of course) replies with: SMBError = ERRSRV - ERRaccess (The requester does not have the necessary access rights within the specified context for the requested

Workgroup popups with samba
Hello, I'd like to know if there's a way to receive Workgroup's winpopup messages with samba under linux. If it's impossible, what are the technical problems caused by such a request ? Thank you -- ,,, o + +-----------------------ooO---(_)---Ooo---------------------------+ | "Xylo", a.k.a

Domain logins
Hi all. I recently (like, today :) posted a message about the best way to manage two samba servers and ten or so Windows NT 4.0 and 3.51 Workstation machines. I'm not sure if my question was clear, and I've also gathered more information about what exactly I want to do. These are all 3.51 and 4.0 workstation machines; there is no NT server involved. All workstations and two samba

WINS client problems
I have compiled the latest source acquired from the SAMBA Web page to run on AIX 4.2. For some reason my WINS client just isn't working. I verify that the NetBIOS names and IP addresses are in the NT WINS server's tables. I verify that the WINS server's IP address is appropriately configured in smb.conf. I run testparms and all is OK. I executed two commands with no change in

Implementing SAMBA w/ Automounter
I checked the archives and automounter is only mentioned for home dirs. Our organization would like to implement SAMBA but we have over 150 mount points. Is there a way we can use automounter maps with SAMBA? Having to edit smb.conf each time we add/remove a mount point would be quite annoying and time consuming. Cheers, --- Jeff Newton Computer Services PMC-Sierra Inc.

automountd hangs
Hi Samba admins, I was wondering if any of you had problems with your automounter with Samba ? My environment is: Samba 1.9.17p4 on a Sparc20 running Solaris 2.5.1 with the home directories defined in the NIS+ tables. The client are all Win95 PC. Lately, we lose the automounter on the Sun host. Even logged in as root on the console I cannot 'cd' to the /home directory. We have

Querying WINS server
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I couldn't find it in the mailing list archives, the faq, the included documentation, or the source, so I figured I'd at least ask. I'd like to query a WinNT wins server from my linux box, and find the IP address of a machine that is registered there. Ideally, I'd like to just plug that into smbclient. As it stands, when I type

Intermittent logon failures
Samba 1.9.17p2 running on SPARC 4 Solaris 2.5. Windows 95 clients. For some time now I have been hearing reports of users not being able to logon to the domain--but I've never seen it happen myself, and I never do anything to fix it. It's just this annoying problem that doesn't happen often enough for me to ever see or track down. Today, FINALLY, I tried logging into a machine and

nmbd crashing as domain controller
Hi, We've been over this before many times, I think... it's about nmbd crashing in 1.9.17 (all patchlevels, AFAIK). Various suggestions have been suggested (cron jobs to kill off / restart nmbd every hour) but no fixes to nmbd itself (I think). Do the Samba team know of a fix (or could they do one; if they know what the problem is)? A new [fast] machine added to our network recently

Can't join SAMBA-Domain
Hi, I have set up samba 1.9.18p2 on a BSDI 3.0. As I tried to join the samba-server with a NT 4.0 Workstation (sp3,german) I got an error message indicating that my workstation has no account on the samba-server. Further tries doing the same thing only showed an error message that the Domain-Server for the domain I want to connect to cannot be found. * I surely did NOT check this create

KerbNet!
I want to thank whoever mentioned KerbNet by Cygnus Solutions! Wowza! I recommend that people check it out. It lets you implement Kerberos under UNIX and NT, and have them work together (so you have one *unified* security system that is used by both your NT and UNIX boxes). It's at http://www.cygnus.com/product/kerbnet-index.html It also does authentication *without* sending passwords over
