Is it possible to have 2 WIN servers on the same network?
We have a network of apx 200 NT's,W95 & W98 using an NT machine for WINS resolution. Our dept has apx 15 W95/W98 machines hooked to a hub off a switch from the main network. I would like to setup SAMBA to act as a WIN server for just these machines. Is it possible to do without changing subnets? Now to complicate the question. Network login is done via an NT machine as well. If we

Summary: SAMBA requesting to be a master browser....
Mystery solved! Multiple responses pointed out that if the master browser didn't respond within the 12 minutes, that a new election would be forced, and chances are that our unix system beat out the NT. (awww). The question of why our system (SAMBA) even participated in the election I still don't know, unless the default really isn't 0 for os level (at least for our version). The

Running samba 1.9.16p11 on Digital Unix 3.2c. We currently access unix shares from W95 without problems but now since we had our network overhauled, 2 MSDOS harddriveless PC's need to be able to access the unix system for it's hard drive. They have Intel Express cards . How do I setup the MSDOS computer to map a drive to SAMBA. One question is these computers do not have IP addresses, how

SAMBA requesting to be a master browser....
We are running samba 1.9.16p11, and seem to be doing just fine. Last Month, our IT dept informed us that our machine was attempting to be a master browser, which the NT Wins server was not happy about. Below is my global config options. When I killed/restarted the samba daemons (running as daemons and not via inetd) the problem seem to vanish. Feeling this was a fluke, it was dismissed.

What setting determines filename character mapping?
Hi, I'm running samba 3.0.0-15 and have noticed that when users save some files the filenames get transposed. This is usually when they use special characters like the '?' (transposed to '#'). Looking at my smb.conf I found the following settings: # testparm -v | grep -e char -e code dos charset = CP850 unix charset = UTF-8 display charset = LOCALE

Server string in Network Neighbourhood
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is the string that appears in browser lists restricted to being a single string without spaces, or can you include spaces ? I have samba v1.9.15p8 running on a SGI O2 system, and I'm accessing its filesystems from a W95 PC. I started off with the following line in my /etc/init.d/samba script NMBD_OPTS="-C11th Floor SGI O2" which results in

Logging into a remote domain???
Hi - I'll be the first to say I don't completely understand Windows networking, but I did get the following to work when everybody (clients-w95/server-solaris) were on the same subnet. W95 boots up and prompts for username, password, and domain. I log in, and presto I'm connected and netlogon scripts run and everything is great. This is when I'm testing it on a completely

Connecting from W95 to Samba Share
Hello group; This is a question that has been posted before, but I haven't found an answer in the archives or in the FAQ/docs. I've been thru the DIAGNOSIS.txt, and get stuck on net view \\machname from a W95 OSR2 box (error 53 ...). Setup: Solaris machine running Samba 2.0.0. I can use smbclient to connect to it from various HP, AIX, Solaris, and Linux boxes, and NT 4.0 clients work

Problems accessing a W95 share
Hi! I'm trying to use a printer connected to a Win95 box from Linux but when I try 'smbclient -L win95_machine' I get the following message: SMBnegprot failed. myname=TARKUS destname=WIN95 - ERRSRV - 1311 I'm using samba-1.9.18p5. The access in the other way (W95 to Linux shares) works without any problems. When I set the printer as shared in the W95 box it is possible to

Matching two redhat servers
Help! I've got two new servers. I installed redhat v7.3 on one myself, and have got it to run samba successfully and connect to a W95 PC. The other was bought pre-installed with the same linux version, and I cannot get the W95 box to get beyond "No domain server was available...". As far as I see, \etc\samba\smb.conf files are identical, as are the \etc\hosts files. I'm using

old smbd's block new connections
Hi, We recenly upgraded to verion 1.9.18p4 on Digital Unix 4.0b (I believe our previous smb version was 1.9.16). Occasionally we have reports of one of our users having their w95 logon script freeze at the point where it tries to mount their samba drives. I have found I can recreate this problem by: - login to W95. mount a drive from the samba server - turn of the W95 pc. smbd

smbclient size report
Hello everybody, I'm having problems trying to get smbclient give me right size for amanda backup. I'll give two examples: a 3.6GB w95 share and a 500MB nt4.0 share. With w95 smbclient gives inconsistent results (I saw in your maillists' archives that it may be that w95 can't handle that big partitions). This is what amanda is using to get the size: smbclient

SAMBA for OS/390 from W95 client gives 'no such file ...'
Hi all, We just got Samba for OS/390 up and running and it works fine. But we get a problem for some W95 PC's when they try to establish a network connection, the debuglevel 10 shows the following messages : --------------------------------------------------------------------------- lp_file_list_changed() file /etc/smb.conf
