Rsync 2.6.9pre2 tries to read ACLs of nonexistent files
Dear rsync people,
Today I tried to back up my computer using rsnapshot with the RPM
version of rsync-acl 2.6.9pre1 that I built. I tried twice, and both
times, rsync encountered some kind of assertion failure. I was trying
to reproduce the crash with rsync-acl 2.6.9pre2 and noticed a
different bug (described below); when I have a chance, I will go back
and investigate the crash further.

Multiple compare-dest args
Hi all.
I have just finished a small patch that adds support for multiple
--compare-dest or --link-dest args. Its primary usage is to do incremental
backups on top of eachother. (My current backup system stores each
incremental as a single diff of the latest full.)
Example:
First full backup:
rsync -a somedir full-20040415/
First incremental:
rsync -a --compare-dest=../full-20040415 \

[PATCH] Bug fix for file comparison
Hi,
below you find a patch fixing a bug in the file comparison code: The
current code skips the unchanged_file() check when that check succeeded for
an earlier candidate, which could lead to accepting a file with a different
checksum as unchanged, for example.
Please be aware that the patch is untested.

[PATCH] Unsnarl missing_below/dry_run logic.
The generator can skip a directory's contents altogether due to
--ignore-non-existing, a daemon exclude, or a mkdir failure. On a --dry-run,
the generator can also note the missingness of a directory while still scanning
its contents. These two scenarios were conflated using a single set of
missing_below/missing_dir variables in combination with transient increments in
dry_run; this caused

[patch] add "--ignore" option
Hi,
The patch below adds a "--ignore" option to rsync, which means
"--exclude-but-dont-delete-even-if-we-specified--delete-excluded".
I need this for a few tasks, the simplest of which is to have rsync resist
trying to delete NetApp filers' ".snapshot" directories.
The change is fairly simple (the boolean filter returns become tri-state),
and works for me both

Added functionality --compare-file and --compare-auto
Recently various needs for multiple version handling were discussed
and I put forward a plan of mine. Subsequently the proposal for a
--compare-file=<FILE> switch had support, so I have implemented
this. I have also implemented an experimental --compare-auto which
decides which file to match against using a rule.
Instructions for patch:
1. Install rsync-2.5.6 source

[PATCH][RFC] space saving incrementals
Please CC me directly as i'm not on the list.
I have attached a patch against latest CVS (cvs diff -u)
that adds the following functionality. I can break it up if
you would prefer it in pieces. Comments welcome.
o add compare-perms option
This creates a new inode for a file even if only
the perms have changed. This way if a file
outside of destdir is hardlinked to a dentry

[patch] --link-dest
Updated to current cvs without the --exclude-from - patch.
This patch allows specifying a --link-dest path similar to
--compare-dest except that unchanged files are hard-linked to the
--link-dest path instead of producing a sparse tree.

[PATCH] --link-dest option
Please CC me. I'm not subscribed.
Attached is a patch against 2.5.4pre1 CVS current to add the
--link-dest option so rsync will create hardlinks for
unchanged regular files to a directory on the destination.
This is like --compare-dest except that the result is not a
sparse tree.
Also included is extension to --(ex|in)clude-from to allow -
for stdin.

about rsyncing of block devices
Hiya,
I can see it's a regular subject on this list.
I, like others wanted to use rsync to synchronise two block
devices (as it happens one lvm volume and one nbd device served
by qemu-img on a remote host from a qcow2 disk image so that I
can keep the old versions)
As I couldn't find any report of it being done successfully,
I'm just sharing my findings as it might benefit others.

Incremental backups and batch mode.
I'm trying to use the rsync algorithm for incremental backups.
After a quick look at rsync I saw the batch mode operations,
and I thought that maybe I can modify them for incremental backups.
What is needed is to add an option to save the checksums of all
the files of the level 0 backup and a second option to use the level n
checksum to calculate the delta batch files for the level n+1

Some files not logged when using --compare-dest. Bug?
Hi again.
I just spotted another peculiarity when inspecting the rsync log. When
using --compare-dest, source files that have permissions that differ
from the "comparables" are not logged, unless you're using -i.
Here's a testing session:

rsync hangs, leaves defunct process
Hello,
I'm experiencing a weird problem which I haven't been able to track down
for 8+ weeks now.
Situation is as follows: There is a nigthly backup from our main server
to a backup server. The server base directory is mounted there read-only
via NFS. Then we do something like this:
1. Duplicate the contents of yesterday's backup into
/sicherungen/2007/02/02/01.41/

PATCH: --write-devices to allow synchronising to a block device
Hi List,
I had a need recently to efficiently synchronise between some large LUNs
(boot drive disks) at two different datacentres. Solutions like drbd and
$proprietary_array_vendors_software were overkill - we only needed
(wanted!) to periodically synchronise these LUNs whenever major changes
were generated on the source. On the other hand however, re-sending the
entire disk contents each time

incremental backups of maildir via rsync
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi folks,
I would like to do incremental backups of the users' maildir
directories to a dedicated backup host (using "rsync -SHa"
and rsnapshot).
Problem is: Dovecot bloats the incremental backup by changing
the file names again and again.
Is there some way to tell Dovecot to keep meta information
separate from the file names?
Any
