Help with dump/restore
So I recently installed an Overland Arcvault 12 tape library on a server to back up /var/log/ and /home. The server is an out-of-box RHEL 5 install, with all packages selected, in an isolated lan, with no package updates. Also, this is a live server that cannot be brought down for backups, and some files may be actively in use during the dump - just gotta live with it. Since I know EL5 and

Recycling and keeping backups - Tower of Hanoi management of backups using rsync
Thanks to Kevin and Paul for responses. We use a modified Tower of Hanoi scheme (on top of rsync and --link-dest and recycling) for deciding which backups to keep. Here is a sample of our holdings for one area: home.20111124.seq.0 set 0 home.20130512.seq.512 set 10 home.20140203.seq.768 set 9 home.20140414.seq.832 set 7 home.20140708.seq.896 set 8 home.20140815.seq.928 set 6

[PATCH] nv50,nvc0: fix 3d blits with mipmap levels
Make sure to normalize the z coordinates as well as the x/y ones when there are mipmaps present. Fixes 3d mipmap generation, which now uses the blit path. Signed-off-by: Ilia Mirkin <imirkin at alum.mit.edu> Cc: "10.2" <mesa-stable at lists.freedesktop.org> --- Did a full piglit run on nva8 and nve7 without regressions. The cubemap array mipmap generation test still fails,

cut-off time for rsync ?
If your goal is to reduce storage, and scanning inodes doesnt matter, use --link-dest for targets. However, that'll keep a backup for every time that you run it, by link-desting yesterday's copy. Y end up with a backup tree dir per day, with files hardlinked against all other backup dirs. My (and many others) here's solution is to mv $ancientbackup $today; rsync --del

From OCFS to tape via tar (and back again)
We're using RMAN to back up our 9.2 RAC database to an OCFS v1 volume. We have an existing shell script that we use for copying files from disk to tape via tar, one file at a time. (Don't ask why. It's a legacy script. Long story.) We're tweaking this script to use --o_direct when tarring the file to tape and that seems to be working fine: # tape device is /dev/nst0 $ tar

[patch] link-dest messages and max-size warnings (fwd)
rsync Folks, The following explanatory text is by me and the patches are by Rowan McKenzie for use by the Advanced Scientific Computing group at CSIRO. This patch builds upon the --link-dest patch by Bryant Hansen (Thanks heaps!). 1. The original patch provided an alternate behaviour for rsync when using the --link-dest option. When there are identical files in the source and link-dest areas,

Backup scripts - recycling old backup directories (Kevin Korb)
Kevin, Thanks for the reply and interest in this topic. Comments below. Regards Rob. > I did consider that but rejected it for 2 reasons... > > 1. Backup run time. sg device
What is the "sg" device? The reason I ask, is that I have a file server running CentOS 4.2 on a Dell Precision 1650. Disks are attached via QLogic FC. I backup to a Qualstar TLS-4222 tape changer, with AIT-2 tapes, which is connected over an Adaptec 29160 Ultra 160 SCSI. The software I'm using is Legato Networker version 7.1.2. I'm backing up a bit under 1 TB a month

Usage of apply function with two matrices
Hello, I am struggling to overcome following problem: I have matrix Vf and matrix V, which both have 3 columns and I want to create a spline function basing on coordinates from this matrices (more precisely coordinates of function nr 1: x are taken from Vf[,1] and y are taken from V[,1] respectively), because function apply() base on 1 argument I made it in this way:

Noncentral t & F distributions
Dear List: The square of the noncentral t-statistic with noncentrality parameter \delta is a noncentral F with noncentrality parameter \lambda=\delta^2. So, t^2_{\nu,\delta} = F_{1,\nu,\lambda=\delta^2}. Consequently, it should follow that t^2_{1-\alpha/2,\nu,\delta} = f_{1-alpha,1,\vu,\lambda=\delta^2}. However, this is not what is happening with the following code. The central

Hi all, This is my first message to the list. I've been experimenting with running dovecot on my unRAID server (basically, a parity-protected array of disks, running on a slackware 13.1 platform). Someone on the unRAID forum had built a binary distribution of dovecot 1.1.20 and I got this up and running without too much trouble. Today, I've been building the latest dovecot release

Cronjob script with date stamp?
I have a cron job that calls a shell script - the script invokes dump. I'd like to do two things: - Have the script dump the results of the job to a text file. I tried this with /path/to/dump my switches -v >> /home/me/dump.log But that just produced an empty file. - Have the dump file be date-stamped with the date it was executed. Right now, I manually edit the script to change

Non-linear maximization function in R
Hello, # Full disclosure. I am not sure if my problem is a bug(s) in the code, or a fundamental misunderstanding on my part about what I am trying to do with these statistics. Incremental backups?
So I thought I'd get a head start for next week - I have a low-power Linux box that has a few samba shares mounted, and limited hard disk space. This box is connected to a tape library via SCSI card. I want to find the best way to create a full, then incremental backup of the samba mounts, directly to tape. Some of the samba mounts are appliances that cannot run any special
