can rsync scan files only with mtime since T?
Hi I have a file system that contains millions of small files. Since I backup it everyday with rsync using slow WAN link, I think it will be nice that if rsync can do this: An option that let rsync only check with remote rsync daemon about local files that has last modification time newer than one day ago (so is modified since yesterday backup). This can greatly reduce the WAN traffic. Is this

nested folders
using both thunderbird and roundcube with dovecot IMAP, I can create all the folders I desire, but cannot create subfolders; I also cannot delete a folder once created. I get a very un-informative error message from each. Is there a special setting required to permit sub-folder creation? folder deletion? I've got 770 mail:mail virtual_user_home 770 mail:mail mail_sub-directory

Option --numeric-ids not the default?
Hi All, I've browsed the history of the list, but can't seem to find an answer to something that I find quite surprising - why isn't --numeric-ids the default when rsync is told to preserve permissions? It seems to me that the current behaviour runs against the grain of more than a quarter century of unix tradition, and certainly caught me by surprise the first time I encountered it.

[External] subfolders in the R folder
The "good reason" is all the tooling in R doesn't work with subfolders and would have to be rewritten. All the package check and build stuff. And that's assuming you don't want to change the basic flat package structure - for example to allow something like `library(foo)` to attach a package and `library(foo.bar)` to attach some subset of package `foo`. That would require

PATCH: --write-devices to allow synchronising to a block device
Hi List, I had a need recently to efficiently synchronise between some large LUNs (boot drive disks) at two different datacentres. Solutions like drbd and $proprietary_array_vendors_software were overkill - we only needed (wanted!) to periodically synchronise these LUNs whenever major changes were generated on the source. On the other hand however, re-sending the entire disk contents each time

Right-management Bug?
Hidiho! I have two small problems and I hope anybody can help me. First a short description, what I want to do: We are moving lots of data from a win2k server to a samba 3.0 server (on a debian woody). The win2k server is the pdc of our network and will not be deactivated. The samba server will only act as a file server - so we installed it on a patched debian with XFS and ACL-support (samba was

[External] subfolders in the R folder
A quick drive-by-comment: What if 'R CMD build' would have an option to flatten R/ subfolders when building the tarball, e.g. R/unix/a.R R/windows/a.R R/a.R becomes: R/00__unix__a.R R/00__windows__a.R R/a.R ? Maybe that would be sufficient for most use cases. The only thing I can imagine is that source file references (e.g. in check NOTEs) will be toward the latter and not the

The patch write-devices.diff (rw-devices.diff) fix
Hello, I faced the problem of synchronization block devices and found the patch write-devices.diff by Darryl Dixon, that went trough this mailing list http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2009-October/024037.html Unfortunately the patch was one flaw for me. It doesn't improve performance of synchronization. When I tried to test it using something like: ./rsync

Odd issue with fail2ban
We're seeing on a few of our servers - and sometimes it's only occasionally on some of those - where fail2ban's running happily, AFAIK, but there's an attack (from China, Brazil, etc) on ssh, and they don't seem to be banned; I see many, many sorries for wrong username or password. It *seems* to work again once restarted. mark

Bidirectional rsync with "trash" support
Hello everybody, I was thinking about a special script to be done with rsync, when I realized my needs might have been common enough to have already been fulfilled by somebody else through a script or by some backup software. I have a folder I share between two computers of mine, A and B. What i want is to be able to keep it in full sync. If a file is added in A, it should be added to B when

CentOS 6.3 - fail2ban not working properly + workaround
I recall others on this list are using fail2ban to block brute force login attempts. Packages are from the EPEL repo, so I'm just sharing some knowledge here. For about two months now I've had a CentOS 6.3 box (web host) in production that occasionally is ftp brute forced. Oddly enough fail2ban wasn't nabbing the perpetrators. I found that the iptables chain for VSFTP isn't

VFS Full Audit module forces logging of failures
Hi All, I have taken a look through the vfs_full_audit.c module in samba-3.0.10/source/modules/ and it seems that there is no way to turn off logging of *some sort* of failure event... There is the concept of a 'none' list of ops (this is the default for the success event), and there is a concept of an 'all' list of ops (the default for the failure event), but there is no way to

"Invalid object" error in boxplot
Hi, I'm trying to make a boxplot with the data at the end of the message, and when I try to execute the command >boxplot(Diatoms) (or for any other field instead of "Diatoms") I get the following error message: Error in oldClass(stats) <- cl : adding class "factor" to an invalid object Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot, Miriam Date

Such a nice setup thanks to mongrel/mongrel_cluster
We''re almost done with our migration from Apache+FastCGI to Apache+mongrel_cluster. There have been a few bumps in the road, mostly deploy issues that have nothing to do with mongrel (we don''t have root access on our production server). This is for a RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 setup. Zed, would you want the process we went through for the docs section of the site? Right now
