Using rsync to backup remote server as root
Hi there, I use this rsync command to backup "/" of a remote server: rsync -Hav --delete --exclude-from=backup.excludes --delete-excluded -e "ssh -p 45658" root at samwise:/ /mnt/backup/samwise/backup Where: samwise: is the name of the server (yes yes, I know, naming computer after Hobbits may be considered bad form) 45685 is the port samwise is listening on for ssh. rsync and translating restricted NTFS filename characters
I am backing up files from Linux to a NTFS using rsync. I have the NTFS mounted on Linux via CIFS. I am discovering errors while attempting to backup files with restricted NTFS characters, like : [colon]. For example, I am unable to backup my crucial maildirs, as a colon is encoded in each Linux file path. Is there a solution to rsync Linux file paths with restricted NTFS characters, to NTFS?

rsync deleting symbolic link unexpectedly
I''m running 2.6.6 on a red hat EL3 system. using the following command, rsync -rlptDvzL --stats --include=a/ --include=a/dir/ --include=a/dir/symlink/ --include=a/dir/symlink/dir2/ --include=a/dir/symlink/dir2/dir3/ --exclude=''**'' /export/stuff remote::stuff I expect the "symlink" (which is really a symbolic link to a directory) to be preserved on the

(CYGWIN) Rsync Stalling Upon first file transfer.
Rsync will recieve the file list, and discover the files to consider, and then stalls out on the first actual file transfered. 0 bytes 0kB/s. On the recieving server, the DLGDiagv504f.exe file is named .dlgdiagv504.f.exe.7dd0oa and is only 512 kb. The rsync process still runs after this, like it's in an idle mode. It's not just this file, its been a number of different files.

Old versions of lib/addrinfo.h missing from rsync repo
Wayne, Today, to investigate an issue on RHEL 5.2, I checked out rsync 2.6.8 from the rsync repository and attempted to build it. The build failed because the tagged tree did not contain lib/addrinfo.h, which is included by rsync.h. On further investigation, the 2007-10-24 snapshot of the CVS repository you sent me contains revisions 1.1 through 1.11 of lib/addrinfo.h with the release-2-6-8 tag

using rsync to get filestats
Would it be more efficient to use rsync to get filestats instead of using the 'find' command? I would like to know how big a directory is on a filesystem, but this directory has millions of small files. I was wondering if rsync would be more efficient than find when using "-n" options. TIA

Can i prioritize my jobs with RSYNC ?
Suppose we have about 1000 files at location 'A' & 500 files at location 'B' & we want them to be transmitted to each other (not exactly synchronizing two location). RSYNC can do that, no issues on that. But i have few queries further. My first query: 1. Can we make some sort of queuing procedure alongwith or through RSYNC. Like in which we can provide priorities to

Rsync maintained patches repository
Wayne, How can I access the rsync maintained patches repository with the git tools? These work: $ firefox http://gitweb.samba.org/?p=rsync.git;a=summary $ git clone git://git.samba.org/rsync.git $ firefox http://gitweb.samba.org/?p=rsync.git/patches.git;a=summary So I thought this might work, but it doesn't: $ git clone git://git.samba.org/rsync.git/patches.git Initialized empty Git

Cygwin rsync to RH rsync server
Hi all, I'm new to the rsync list. I've been searching for two days and have tried five different installs and so far none work the way I need them to. I have an "backup" server running rsync --version: rsync version 2.6.6 protocol version 29 Copyright (C) 1996-2005 by Andrew Tridgell and others <http://rsync.samba.org/> Capabilities: 64-bit files, socketpairs, hard

Proposed enhancements to rsync filters
I would like to propose some improvements to rsync's filters. (1) Add a notation that makes a pattern match both a file and everything under it if it happens to be a directory. One possibility: ending a path in //. "+ mydir//" would be equivalent to "+ mydir" "+ mydir/**". Just some syntactic sugar. (2) Add a third sender behavior to "hide" and

Packages for rsync 2.6.8 with ACLs
Dear rsync people, I have finally made packages for rsync 2.6.8 with ACL support. You can download a prepatched source package and RPMs from here: http://www.kepreon.com/~matt/myrsync/ Or you can use this yum repository: http://www.kepreon.com/~matt/rpm/ The RPM is called rsync-acl so automatic updating tools will know not to toss it in favor of plain rsync, but it "Provides" rsync

How to delete files older than X on backup during sync?
Hi list, I have been reading MAN pages and listarchives, but not found the answer to my question though I am sure it must be possible to acheive my wish. I wish to use rsync to create a backup BUT only keep the files for a limited period of time, EG two weeks. I have not yet been able to figure out how to do this inside rsync (while the backup is being performed) and my understanding of the

can rsync scan files only with mtime since T?
Hi I have a file system that contains millions of small files. Since I backup it everyday with rsync using slow WAN link, I think it will be nice that if rsync can do this: An option that let rsync only check with remote rsync daemon about local files that has last modification time newer than one day ago (so is modified since yesterday backup). This can greatly reduce the WAN traffic. Is this

Rsyncing a very large directory tree (over 50,000 files)
Hi, I need to rsync a very large directory tree (over 50,000 files). This is not a regular job, after the initial rsync is done, I can do a nightly rsync and only a few files will change. Is there anything I need to be aware of before doing this? I started the script this morning, but it was still building the file list after around 15 minutes. Is it better to do it using several

Rsync hard-links devices with different mtimes despite -t: expected?
I noticed that rsync is happy to hard-link a device node from a --link-dest dir even if its mtime differs from that of the source device node and --times is given. Is this behavior expected? It seems to break the rule that a difference in preserved attributes disqualifies a hard link. To see the behavior, run the following as root: mkdir src dest basis mknod src/null c 1 3 sleep 1 mknod

Rsync itemizing "t" (should be "T") when lutimes fails on recreated symlink
IIUC, the new philosophy of symlink times is that -t preserves them to the extent that they are settable; when they aren't, it's just as if -t wasn't given. But rsync breaks this principle in the following case. Suppose rsync is configured with HAVE_LUTIMES enabled but the lutimes call doesn't actually work (I simulated this via the attached patch). When rsync recreates a

RSYNC via pipe/socket ?
Hello ! I`m trying to find a way to use lzo compression for the data being transferred by rsync. rsync only supports gzip (or maybe ssh -c, which is also zlib), which gives cpu intensive workload - and this cannot be exchanged by a commandline param like we have with tar (--use-compress-program=....) i like to use lzo because it does much faster compression than gzip. I read the following in
