Forward local5.* to remote syslog-ng server
Ok, I can't quite figure out how to make this work. I want to simultaneously log everything for facility local5 in a local file and a remote syslog-ng server. local7 is working fine getting the boot.log log entries transferred over to the syslog-ng server, but not so much with local5. Local logging of local5.* on the client is working fine now. SERVER: /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf

Incoming rsync connection attempts
Greetings - In my logwatch report this morning I noticed reference to an attempt to connect to rsync from an external IP address. It doesn't appear that the connection was successful based on correlating information between /var/log/secure and /var/log/messages. But I am looking for some suggestions for implementing more preventative measures, if necessary. The log information from

uid/gid settings in rsyncd.conf not respected?
Hi All, I must not understand the uid/gid line in rsyncd.conf. If someone could briefly point out where I've gone wrong, I'd appreciate it. I've created a special user to backup a server which has some users who don't want all their files backed up, so I'm trying to address their concerns by using the uid= and gid= lines in rsyncd.conf to have the rsyncd run with

Rsyncd log file permission
Hi I am wondering if there is any way to change the file permission of "rsync.log" and "rsyncd.lock" via rsyncd.conf. Most likely the "lock" file is not possible, but maybe the other file is possible. The reason I am asking is because if I UserA runs rsync, then UserB won't be able to write to rsync.log file since its owned by UserA and readable only to UserB.

Connection to rsyncd over ssh tunnel seems to choke up (v2.6.9 Ubuntu)
I have been running the following (from a cron script with a non password authorized_key exchange) ... rsync -aP -vv --exclude=".*/" -e 'ssh -fN user at site.com.au -L 8873:127.0.0.1:873' rsync://localhost:8873/data/ /data/ ... and not getting much to happen as either evidenced in /var/log/rsyncd.log or as artefacts on the local file system. Then I started to execute the

Update: WARNING: --rsh or -e option ignored when connecting to rsyncdaemon]
the --pasword-file= option is only for passing a password to a rsync server, as you have set up with the rsync --daemon process. Your rsyncd.conf file is fine, too. The problem is that you aren't calling your rsync daemon from your commandline. You are trying to connect via rsync to host as axlink and start a 'rsync --sender' process, to transfer data within the ssh process.

rsync logfile - daemon does not log enough
I am running rsync version 2.56 in daemon mode on a server running Redhat 8.0. When I check my log file (located in /var/log/rsyncd.log), the only lines I see have to do with the server starting up, like so: 2003/09/11 16:53:42 [15025] rsyncd version 2.5.6 starting, listening on port 873 I would like to see output relating to connections, usernames etc., so I set up the following rsyncd.conf

log format '%P' only logs '/' when use chroot = true
The subject says it all :-) Apparently in pre-3.0.0 versions '%P' would log the actual path as specified in the module entry in rsyncd.conf, but now it's apparently relative to the chroot... Paul Slootman

I have the latest rsync running on mandrake official 10. At 2:30 I run rsync --daemon from cron to run an offsite backup for all my customers. At 8:00 I run killall rsync. Conflicting timestamps in rsyncd.log
Hi list, I just setup my first rsyncd server and all is working well as far as file syncing goes. However, I am a bit baffled by the fact that some of the log entries in the rsyncd.log file are entered in local time and other are entered in GMT. Here is a sample: file upload: ============ 2009/03/01 15:15:49 [22641] connect from UNKNOWN (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) 2009/03/01 23:15:49 [22641] rsync to

strange password problem with rsync
Hi guys, I am experiencing a very strange problem with passwords and username with rsync. I have a "auth users" line in my /etc/rsyncd.conf file (see below) and a corresponding username and password in my /etc/rsyncd.secrets. The strange thing is is that authentication for the module listed in /etc/rsyncd.conf (unixadm) only works IF the username in /etc/rsyncd.secrets is the same as

"@ERROR: auth failed on module"
Greetings list, I've been banging my head against this for a few days now, so finally I throw myself upon your tender mercies. I had rsync working fine to make offsite backups via an IPSEC VPN over an ADSL connection - until the remote raid5 server went down. It was rebuilt with RedHat 8 and since then I have not been able to rsync to it. Both ends have vanilla rsync-2.5.5 installed.

rsync 2.5.5 - Utilizing "exclude from" in rsync.conf
I am attempting to utilize the exclude from option in my rsync configuration file (rather than maintain lists on users machines) but it does not appear to be working. One example, I placed *.mp3 in the file to keep them from syncing mp3 files to the server and jamming up space. But rsync just seems to ignore this and syncs the files anyway without any errors to the syslog. All of my
