update rysnc 3.0 on ubuntu 7
I am runninng rsync on Ubuntu. It was installed using apt-get install rysnc.
I note that the package has not yet been updated to rysnc 3.0.
I would like to update using the tar but I am confused how to update the
existing installation.
On this machine, I am mainly using rsync to send to a cwrsync server (which
I have updated already). Can I just overwrite the rsync executable?
Any help

error allocating core memory buffers (code 22) at util2.c(106) [sender=3.1.2]
Hi:
I'm in the middle of recoverying from a tactical error copying
around an Mac OS X 10.10.5 Time Machine backup (turns out Apple's
instructions aren't great...), and I had rsync running for the past 6
hours repairing permissions/acls on 1.5 TB of data (not copying the
data), and then it just died in the middle with:

User permissions - nil authorised users
I am a bit surprised by the behaviour of Samba user permissions (security =
user) - although in fact it produces exactly what I want! Can I confirm it
is correct, and ask one question?
I have one class of shares (private) which I want only specified users to
access. And another class which I want everyone to be able to access
(public) but with a common password protection for some element of

: Model formula question
Hi,
I have a data set with a continuous predictor X, a factor A and a continuous
dependent
variable Y.
I am trying to build a linear model of the form:
Y = (b0 + b1*X1)*B(A)
where B(A) is a constant for each level of the factor A.
I am not quite sure how to formulate the appropriate model formula. If I
write:
Y ~ ( 1 + X)/A
, I get estimates for as many constants and slopes as the number of

[PLEASE REPLY _OFF_ THE LIST, i.e. DON'T CC to r-help at ...]
Hi,
I don't see this sort of thing very often on the mailing lists, so list
moderators and others should feel free to tell me if it breaches list
etiquette and/or delete my post if necessary. But I can't see what harm
it could do...
I am just wondering approximately how many people use / have used some of
the R stuff

Re: [R-SIG-Mac] NaN and linear algebra
No, blas/veclib is tested, so aprt this extreme case you should report
some other more commonly used cases in which something fails on OS X.
This will help us to work it out.
As said, I'll try some tests without using veclib and let you know.
I've fowarded this mail to r-devel, which seems to be the right place,
so for future msg on the subject please use r-devel.

Firths bias correction for log-linear models
Dear R-Help List,
I'm trying to implement Firth's (1993) bias correction for log-linear models.
Firth (1993) states that such a correction can be implemented by supplementing
the data with a function of h_i, the diagonals from the hat matrix, but doesn't
provide further details. I can see that for a saturated log-linear model, h_i=1
for all i, hence one just adds 1/2 to each count,

edit.data.frame
Dear list,
Sometimes I have huge data.frames and the small spreadsheetlike
edit.data.frame is quite handy to get an overview of the data. However,
when I close the editor all data are rolled over the console window,
which takes time and clutters the window. Is there a way to avoid this?

error in nls, step factor reduced below minFactor
Hello,
I've seen various threads on people reporting:
step factor 0.000488281 reduced below `minFactor' of 0.000976563
While I know how to set the minFactor, what I'd like to have happen is for nls to return to me, the last or closest fitted parameters before it errors out. In other words, so I don't get convergence, I'd still like to acquire the values of the parameters

Stacking several vectors from the list
Hi everybody,
I'm working on the very
messy data, I have tried to clean it up in SAS and
SAS/IML but there is not enough info on how to handle certain things
in SAS so I have turned to R. The thing itself should be rather
simple, so i was wondering if someone could help me out.
The original .csv has ([1] 7138 6338 ) dimensions with funds with the corresponding dates and observations for each

r online
Hi,
I'd like to execute simple commands and functions in R through a
website, is there any service like this somewhere?
I only found http://www.osvisions.com/r-online/ but it does not work
(last update 2003) and the links to releated websites only give errors
(if I calculate 7+3).
Thanks for help & hints,

effect size
Hi,
Having searched google '[R] aov effect size' without any results I
wonder if I not completely miss something.
Is there any R function that calculates the effect size of an AOV's main
effect or interaction effect? It should be related to the F's and the
degree of freedom of the error, but the multitude in numbers in aov()
baffle me a bit.
Thanks,

mu^2(1-mu)^2 variance function for GLM
Dear list,
I'm trying to mimic the analysis of Wedderburn (1974) as cited by
McCullagh and Nelder (1989) on p.328-332. This is the leaf-blotch on
barley example, and the data is available in the `faraway' package.
Wedderburn suggested using the variance function mu^2(1-mu)^2. This
variance function isn't readily available in R's `quasi' family object,
but it seems to me

ggplot2-ddply question

I am trying to use the ddply function to estimate the mean of 'Total','Fry','Smolt' and 'Fry.Eq' columns without success. I have the dput of my dataset below. I wonder if someone can give me a hand with this function.

how to contrast with factorial experiment
Hello, R experts,
If I understand Ted's anwser correctly, then I can not contrast the
mean yields between sections 1-8 and 9-11 under "Trt" but I can
contrast mean yields for sections 1-3 and 6-11 because there exists
significant interaction between two factors (Trt:section4,
Trt:section5). Could I use the commands below to test
the difference between sections 1-3 and 6-11 ?

work)
Thought I'd try 1.6 beta5 (and 1.4.18 didn't want to compile vpb

1.6 did compile and almost works.

link to a vignette/overview document in .Rd file?
Is there a reliable way to link to a vignette or other overview
document, which has been included in the "inst/doc" directory of a
source package, within a package help file in Rd format?
or maybe link to an index of such documents?

how to constrast with factorial experiment
Hello, R users,
I have two factors (treat, section) anova design experiment where
there are 3 replicates. The objective of the experiment is to test if
there is significant difference of yield between top (section 9 to 11)
and bottom (section 9 to 11) of the fruit tree under treatment. I
found that there are interaction between two factors. I wonder if I
can contrast means from levels of

failed: Too many levels of symbolic links
All,
My dovecot install works great except for one error I keep seeing this
in my logs. The folder has 7138 messages in it. I am informed the user
they needed to reduce the number of messages in the folder and believe
this will fix the problem. My question is about where the problem
lies. Is the problem related to an internal limit with Dovecot v2.0.15
or with my Debian (3.1.0-1-amd64)?
