Fwd: Making rsync compile under Mac OS X 10.3.9 with extended attributes
Precisions:
If I run my patched rsync on 10.4 instead of 10.3, it's my function
that returns an error:
rsync: rsync_xal_set: lsetxattr("Src/60-bsd-flags/dir-with-
flags","com.apple.FinderInfo") failed: Unknown error: -5000 (-5000)
And error -5000 means:

Passed all tests with flying colors on Mac OS X 10.4.11 - synopsis of installation and testing
Awesome work Wayne. I have been following the various threads about
running rsync 3.0.0 on MacOS X 10.4.11 and wanted to confirm that
following all the various bits of advice yields a clean running rsync
(as tested by backup bouncer).
I am running MacOS X 10.4.11 on PPC. The following is a synopsis of
my installation procedure (as gathered from the various emails in the
archive) - note

File locking from Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)
Dear list,
My system administrator at office runs a SMB server for us all to
share files at smb://server/share/ , on which we share mainly MS
Office/OpenOffice.org documents. I have recently switched to iBook G4 with
Panther. After the switching, I can connect to the SMB server using
Panther's built in SMB capability (under Finder). But then we discover
that when I open a file on

Odd issue with locked directories and Mac OS X
Some of my users have reported problems with rsync puking on locked
folders. The errors typically look like this:

Backup
> rsync: mkstemp "/Volumes/SCSI Backup/Users/Ken/Library/Caches/
> Metadata/Safari/Bookmarks/..DS_Store.N9xtNy" failed: Operation not

Hello,
I have a very odd issue happening, that I hope someone else might be
able to give me pointers.
I have two different networks running in two different locations,
connected by a network vpn.
In each network I have a test smb virtual machine.

NFS share problem with mac os x client
Hello, I test right now the beauty of zfs. I have installed opensolaris on a spare server to test nfs exports. After creating tank1 with zpool and a subfilesystem with zfs tank1/nfsshare, I have set the option sharenfs=on to tank1/nfsshare.
With Mac OS X as client I can mount the filesystem in Finder.app with nfs://server/tank1/nfsshare, but if I copy a file an error ocours. Finder say "The

Mac OS X HFS+ metadata patch, take 2
Hi.
Several months ago, I posted my first pass at a patch to transfer
Mac OS X HFS+ metadata (resource forks and Finder metadata) to
non-HFS+ filesystems (Linux, Solaris, etc).
I finally got a chance to update the patch to reflect suggestions
offered on the list. Thanks for the ideas, this version should be
a big improvement.
The diff and a binary (and a fuller explanation) can be found at:

Mac OS X Finder hangs when accessing Samba server
Hello,
I'm hoping someone may be able to steer me in the right direction, as
I've searched the archives with no joy.
Configuration:
Server: Fedora FC3, kernel 2.6.9-1.667, samba-3.0.13-1
Client: Mac OS X Panther 10.3.8
The Samba server works fine with a Windows 2000 client on the same LAN.
With Panther I am seeing the connection drop during transfers and/or the
Finder freezing

Debian + Samba 3.0 + Mac OS X 10.[2-3] -> insufficient privileges
hi all,
I've read trough the list and see discussions with similar problems.
I've setup a file server and users can connect to it via SMB/CIFS.
Windows users just happy. The problem starts with the Mac users.
All Mac users are using OS X (versions 10.2,10.3).
I'm vetoing several files right now, permission inheriting turned on,
I've forced the create mode and directory mode to

Unable to mount SMB shares under Mac OS 10.6.5
Help -
(I'm new to the list, so please be gentle) I've tried Seagate support, and Apple Forums with no resolution or adequate suggestions for troubleshooting/resolving this issue, so I thought I'd try the samba community. It's a bit esoteric for me/most Mac users (SMB shares under Max OS X), but I thought I'd give it a try.
I can no longer mount any shares from my Seagate

samba.org Solaris binary is incompatible with Mac OS 10.2.x as client
More precisely what I've discovered is, at least in the cases of 2.2.8a
and 3.0alpha22, when a 64-bit Samba is built with Sun's Forte compiler
you'll end up with something incompatible with Mac OS 10.2.3.
I always compile Samba myself with Sun's compiler to produce a 64-bit
Samba. Well yesterday it came to my attention that Mac OS 10.2.x doesn't
work with whats on my main

Resources forks 'dot underscore' files locked indefinitely from MacOSX clients
We have a central samba file share for our designers (who all use OSX
boxes, and mostly use Macromedia products) to work off of. I've lately
been able to track down a lot of application quirks (mostly problems with
errors when saving, about files being locked) to the Mac resource fork
files being indefinitely locked. Here's a sample from a `smbstatus`

Automating kerberos authentication on Mac OS X?
Is there any way to "automate" kerberos authentication on Mac OS X?
Here's the problem:
When a user wants to access samba-3.0.2a -server from a Mac, he/she has
to run
"kinit" to get the principal ticket. If this is not done, Mac's tools
(Finder) will try to authenticate
with NTLM, which is and will be disabled on our servers. Of course,
this fails miserably.
I
