Securing Rsync
I have a rsync server set up on a win2k server and a win xp pro computer is my client. It's working very well doing the anonymous transfers. However, I've tried setting up a password file and not having any success. rsyncd.conf on my server: use chroot = false strict modes = false hosts allow = * [serverbu] auth users = user path = c:/serverbu read only = no list = no secrets file =

rsync man pages, rsync faqs, problem with RSYNC_PASSWORD and --password-file
Hi all, This isn't a bug, its just a lapse in the documentation. I just got a script going that repeats every 5 seconds, that uses rsync to send data from A, running Ubuntu V6.06.1, to B, running cygwin. I got stuck on the issue of preventing the password prompt from interrupting the script. The problem is that the man pages are misleading, they suggest that RSYNC_PASSWORD and

Q: Rsync, Batch: How to avoid the "password" ask ?
Hi As I want to automate my Desktop backup process, I'm currently trying to finilize a CMD (Windows XP batch) file in order to save different data (outlook.pst, \desktop, \docs, \Favorites ....). My problem is that even with this parameter SET RSYNC_PASSWORD=xxxx It still ask me for a password, blocking of course all the process automation. I'm running either on my Linux backup box

Interactive Rsync Authentication Problem
I have run across an interesting issue when running rsync from Solaris to an rsync daemon on Linux. It works properly when I specify the password on the command line: RSYNC_PASSWORD=the_Password rsync -r /tmp/test test_user@test_server::test_user/topdir/subdir However, if I do not specify the password on the command line and am prompted interactively, it always fails. After some

rsync --password-file= Problem
Dear list, I'm using rsync via CYGWIN (winxp) compu to access our SUSE linux station for backup purposes. I would like to run this regularly, via BAT files, however the password stays necessary (prompt), after using a -pasword-file=/. There is no error message but password stays necessary. rsync -avzuC --delete --password-file=/cygdrive/d/test/test.txt /cygdrive/d/test/

Is my configuration adequate? (For whole disk backup)
Hi all. I need to backup a server (actually web, dns and mail) placed on Internet, and write data on a computer inside the intranet of our company. I have read good things about rsync from the mailing list and the man pages, and I know that it can represent the solution for what I'm looking for. However, since I'm new to rsync, if you can give me your opinion about my configuration I

rsync failures through ssh tunnels
I attempted to write a script that would connect to the remote rsync server and run rsync and then close the connection. I am finding that sometimes the backgrounded ssh session works -- and sometimes note. I following the syntax at: http://rsync.samba.org/firewall.html though there is NO middle system. heres the script with the commands just echoing the commands to the screen. What I am

Diff problem
Hi everybody, Until know i synchronized a few directories full of binaries with "--checksum" options, it took each time a lot of time since rsync "mdsum" each file contained in my directories. Then I decided to skip "--checksum" option to let rsync work only of files size and files mtime and speed up the process but when i launch a dry-run : rsync wants to

howto enable ssh on connect to rsync daemon
Hi, I'm trying to setup automatic sync of files over SSH from node2 to node1. node2 is the "server" and node1 is the "client". I have setup rsync like this on the nodes which runs AIX (4.3.3 and 5.1): 1. Installed rsync from Linux Toolbox (rsync-2.5.4-1.aix4.3.ppc.rpm) on both nodes. 2. Added following to both nodes /etc/services file: rsync 873/tcp 3. Added

hardlink bug in 2.6.4?
The background: I host one of the unofficial slackware mirrors & push to a high speed (unlisted) mirror that several other unofficials use for pulls. To save time/disk/bandwidth I use a custom script to hardlink the trees prior to pushing the updates to said unlisted mirror. The commandline (linewrap from hell, sorry): (note: username/password/hostname/modulename deliberately obfuscated)

[PATCH] rsync on cygwin - textmode config files
I've been running rsync-2.4.2 with an old patch of mine for some time for backup purposes. Due to the recent remote bug, I thought it was time to upgrade, even if the host was behind a firewall. So I dug up the old patch (2.5.2 version attached), that I think I sent ages ago to this list as well. It does the following: (1) Firstly, the only sensible way to run something as

Can't script failure for missing --password-file
I've a script which calls: rsync --password-file=password.txt rsync://server/files /files However, due to an unrelated error password.txt was missing. In authenticate.c:auth_client, the code tries to read from the password file, then tries the RSYNC_PASSWORD env var, then calls getpass(3). This last step is causing problems as, even though the script is intended to run unattended, it

rsync incremental backup problem with --backup-dir switch
Hello, I am using rsync v2.5.6 to backup our entire server filesystem over the network to a central backup server. I have copied the example script from the rsync website (http://rsync.samba.org/examples.html) to create incremental backups, the --backup-dir seems to have a strange side-effect. Everything goes well, but on the server side where the backup is stored I can't seem to break out
