rsync on osx hack
There have been many problems reported with rsync on OSX: the unpatched version does not preserve extended attributes, and Apple's patched version is buggy, and also does not allow one to backup from OSX to a non-OSX Unix. I have been interested in a fast and reliable way to backup my files from OSX to a non-OSX file server. There are some patched versions of rsync on the web that

Xten SIP client for Macintosh OSX
[this post is just as much for the archives as it is for immediate consumption] Somehow I had completely missed the announcement that XTen Networks had released a SIP client for Mac OSX. Well, they have. It seems to mostly work, even! Very cool. The User interface leaves something to be desired, with it's menus trying to force me to use cell-phone sized windows (!!!!) to manipulate

rsync, mac OSX tiger, and UFS
Hi, I'd like to make a "feature request" for users of rsync on Mac OSX Tiger (10.4) Given the current sorry state of backup tools on Mac OSX, the only way I've found to reliably backup data from Mac OSX is to keep the data on a UFS volume, and to then backup it up using *standard* rsync (no -E) to a Unix file server. This way, all the the "apple double" are

compiling rsync on OSX
Are there any known issues compiling the latest rsync on OSX (10.4)? I've noticed some references to one or two patches, but I'm not sure what they are. I compiled v2.6.8 some time back on a powerpc, with no patches, and it seemed to work OK. I saw nothing in the INSTALL file that suggests a patch is necessary. Thanks for any pointers. -- Victor

How to exclude directories from getting their metadata updated? (Macintosh HFS+ with rsync 3.0.5)
Hello everyone! FOREWORD: I respect your time and resources, I hope to not bother people on this mailinglist! To my defense: This question is far easier towards humans than to mailinglist and web search-engines as the search terms in relation to each other are highly in-causal or paradoxical, and hence lead to poor results. Of course the manpage was the first place where I looked

R on Macintosh OSX Tiger
Hi. I'm not having any luck installing the binary for the new Macintosh OS called "Tiger". I get error messages as below. Can anyone offer me some advice? (PS: I checked the bug list first but a search on "Tiger" turned up nothing so I hope it's OK to post here.) Error in dyn.load(x, as.logical(local), as.logical(now)) : unable to load shared

Macintosh rsync: Inconsistent Behaviour: Hints Appreciated
I have a problem with rsync on macintosh copying files that have not been updated. Despite careful reading of the archives, I can't find an explanation (or a fix), but I strongly suspect I'm just missing something that an expert will recognise instantly... Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm running a nightly backup of my photo/home video directory from a partition

Hi All, I'm have a lot of speech files that are given from an organisation that has a lot of audio tapes with talks on them. Many people use these tapes, and I have started to convert to the audio to mp3. Pros & Cons - Microsoft Office on Macintosh OS X
Hello Boys and Girls and Everybody. I have recently started using a Macintosh computer to replace the dinosaur of an unbelievably unreliable PC that I have been using for the last 10 years. So far I have been very pleased. I have been using OpenOffice for quite a while now as I find it is mostly superior to Microsoft Office in many ways, HOWEVER - OpenOffice lacks the Voice Recognition Software

Macintosh + Samba integration
I have been searching through the docs and on the web to no avail. I work at a university and we are moving our fileservers to new hardware. The problem is, nothing seems to integrate Mac's and Win box's happily. We have a large user base using samba already, but when mac's pick up the same share via CAP, CAP creates files to deal with the dual 'stream' nature of files from a

[LLVMdev] Dynamically adding exception frames in the macintosh OS X
Hi I am porting a JIT compiler to the Macintosh. This software runs under windows and Linux. In both systems there is an interface for adding exception frames dynamically when you add code compiled on the fly. Under linux the (not documented) gcc function __register_frame_info does the trick. Under windows, Microsoft has added an official API for this, that works without problems. The

data import (on macintosh)
I think the problem is the way files are named on the Macintosh. On the Mac, the file separator character, which is "/" on unix and "\" on dos/windows, is ":". Also, the root directory doesn't start with the separator character, but instead just starts with the volume name, which is the name of the hard disk icon on your desktop, so if your file is in the top

Backing up from windows to macintosh
I want to backup from a windows machine to a Macintosh. All of the guides that I've seen describe the other direction. Worse, they all seem slightly different, or inconsistent. The first thing that I'd want to do should be simple: an rsync -az --delete of the entire drive, to back up all of the files. But that's not everything on the windows machine. And this is what I have not seen

Macintosh binaries; was: Rcmdr and Macintosh
I am a Windows user and trying to make life easier for my Mac-using students. After investigating the Mac situation more, it appears that the key to easy use is having precompiled binaries. However the packages I am interested in (Rcmdr and its required package, car) do not have one. I do not have easy access to a Mac, so I have a plea to Macintosh users: could someone please create them if it is
