rsync, mac OSX tiger, and UFS
Hi,
I'd like to make a "feature request" for users of rsync on Mac OSX
Tiger (10.4)
Given the current sorry state of backup tools on Mac OSX, the only
way I've found to reliably backup data from Mac OSX is to keep the data
on a UFS volume, and to then backup it up using *standard* rsync (no -E)
to a Unix file server. This way, all the the "apple double" are

rsync and symbolic links
Is this a known issue?
rsync does not always preserve dates and permissions on symbolic links,
and while the -i option indicates it is trying to bring things in
sync, it does not.
Maybe between OS's that have sufficiently different implementations,
this is not possible.

rsync on osx hack
There have been many problems reported with rsync on OSX: the unpatched
version does not preserve extended attributes, and Apple's patched
version is
buggy, and also does not allow one to backup from OSX to a non-OSX Unix.
I have been interested in a fast and reliable way to backup my files
from OSX
to a non-OSX file server. There are some patched versions of rsync
on the web

not all files copied
Hi,
I'm using rsync to copy and sync a directory of about 25,000 files
across two machines.
I used rsync to make an initial copy, from machine 1 to machine 2,
and then syncing back incremental changes from machine 2 to machine 1.
On the initial copy from machione 1 to machine 2, I found that a
number of files failed
to copy, but that they were copied on a second try.
There were no warnings

Uncomplete hiding on Firefox 1.5
Hi all,
I have observed the following on Firefox 1.5 (both on XP and OSX):
My page has some div containers that hold sortable ul. The div's also
contain links for showing/hiding the contained ul's. No matter which
effect I use to do the hiding and showing (Fade/Appear, SlideUp/Down,
BlindUp/Down) the hidden ul's don't hide completely, leaving a blank
'trace' behind.

Compiling flac for OSX 10.4
Hi, everyone.
I've been trying to compile flac 1.2.1 on OSX by using the 10.4 SDK. I
need to use the 10.4 SDK because the application linking to flac
requires it. Compiling flac with 10.5 results in link issues due to
10.5's fopen being different.
Unfortunately, when trying to compile using a command such as:
CFLAGS="-arch i386 -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk

Rsync dies with "Invalid file index:" error message
Hi all,
i'm having a rather strange problem with rsync (v2.6.8). Rsync is run to synchronize
two identical, rather old Solaris 2.6 servers. All filesystems rsync fine except for one.
Rsync bails out on this particular FS with the following messages:
# /var/tmp/bin/rsync -avz -e "ssh -i $keyfile" --exclude-from=/tmp/rsync_data.excl server:/data/ /data
receiving file list ... done

xattrs questions
I see that rsync will eventually support extended attributes, which
will be great.
But: will it allow backup from a file system that supports xattrs, to
one that does not?
For this to work, rsync would have to represent the xattrs on the
destination machine
in some special format, I suppose, which is outside the usual rsync
mode of operation.
Moreover, even if both machines support

macintosh metadata madness
Like many other Mac OSX users, I have found it frustrating that rsync
is not as usable
as one would like it to be on OSX. I've posted some software on my
website
that I find useful, and that others may find useful as well. It
provides tools that allow
one to access and manipulate OSX metadata, and in particular, to
backup (and restore)
this metadata to a non-OSX, unix machine (using

[LLVMdev] configuring LLVM 2.6 for OSX 10.4sdk on OSX 10.5 system
Hi all,
(Sorry if the answer to this is obvious - and thanks in advance~)
Short version:
linker error of _backtrace from LLVMSystem.a building a dynamic
library embedding LLVM/clang, both against the OSX 10.4 sdk.
Long version:
I've just tried rebuilding my project using the 2.6 release, using the
following commands to try and force LLVM to build against the OSX 10.4
sdk (I am

[LLVMdev] Cross-compiling llvm/clang osx -> win32
Hi,
I'm trying to compile llvm/clang so that: it is compiled on osx 10.6, it runs on osx, but it outputs win32 objects.
More exactly, I'm building an app which generates a .c file that doesn't include or link with anything, and I'd like to be able to make a win32 .dll of it on osx.
Below is what I'm getting. Full log is here:

[LLVMdev] quick q configuring osx
Hi,
For the record, adding
UNIVERSAL_SDK_PATH=/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk/
was insufficient to restrict the .a/.o files to link against the 10.4
sdk, but
env MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=10.4 make
did the trick.
Thanks!

Linux Samba to Mac OSX: resource fork lock problems?
I am seeking a better workaround than I currently have for the problem.
Using OS X 10.3.x and 10.4.x (and possibly other versions) as workstations,
and Gentoo Linux (kernel 2.6.16) with Samba 3.0.22, I have the following
sequence of events. The symptom is most prevalent when dealing with multi
MB files:
1. Resource fork (._ file) gets locked
2. File associated with resource fork also gets

OSX Support/Driver?
Hi,
I just purchased my very first Mac, a 2011 Macbook Pro yesterday.
Now, I am intending to dualboot with OSX and Arch Linux on it,
however, I''d also be interested in accessing my BTRFSfilesystems from
under OSX.
I noticed that the btrfs-utils themselves seem to be in Macports:

However, there doesn''t seem to be any

[LLVMdev] quick q configuring osx
Sorry if this is a newb q... I'm developing an application on a 10.5
machine but want to target the 10.4 SDK. Is there a magic incantation
for the llvm configure script to set the sysroot path, equivalent to
e.g. --with-sysroot "/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.4u.sdk"?
Thanks.
