Rsync and differential Backups
Hi list, how to perform a differential backup using rsync? On web there is a great confusion about diff backup concept when searched with rsync. Users says diff because it copy only differences. For me differential is backup from last full backup. Other users says that to perform a differential backup I must include in rsync command: --backup --backup-dir=/some/path but from manual page of

Using --remove-source-files with backup?
I have a scenario where I am copying from a local system to remote target and need to remove the local source files once they have been successfully transfered. --remove-source-files works fine for this. An issue has come up in that I need to be able to backup the removed local source files as well. With rsync 2.6.9 I tried: rsync --remove-source-files --backup-dir=/archive –abv (source)

Permissions causing full backups?
I am using rsync/rsnapshot on Windows XP (via cygwin) to backup to a mapped share (/u) on a Linux server. I’m hoping to get this to work so that I don’t have to open an XP share to the network for Linux “pull” backups. My current setup doesn’t seem to give me incremental backups. See the “du” output… $ /usr/bin/du -csh /cygdrive/u/docs_bkup/daily.0/ /cygdrive/u/docs_bkup/daily.1/

no true incrementals with rsync?
for example's sake: With traditional backup systems, you keep a base (full backup, let's say every 30 days), then build incrementals on top of that, eg. (what has changed since the base). So, to restore, you copy over your base, then copy each incremental over the base to rebuild up to the latest snapshot. (*copying new incrementals files over older base files*) With rsync, (using

your advice on backup procedure
Hello all, I am down to my last hurdle of my project, backups. I am thinking of three different ways to go and wanted to ask for input on what you think is the better choice. Not asking for 'how to' but more of 'what is best in your experience' The scenario... centos server acting as a virtual host. Virtual machines are webservers and dns servers. All on one machine, all running

CentOS Server Backup Options
What do you guys recommend for backing up a small CentOS server in a business environment. It will have (3) 300gb drives in a raid 5 array but I don't anticipate more than about 25gb of data that needs to be backed up each night. I want a lot of backups with a rotation scheme that included daily, weekly, and monthly copies. I want the daily copies of the data kept until the next week, and

SRC=/, include a few directories and exclude everything else
Hi, I am currently backing up a few Linux boxes, and a Windows XP box, using rsync (through a cron job). Regarding the Windows box ( Windows XP (running Cygwin) <--> Debian Testing), so far I specify a few directories as sources in the rsync command line. I then use an excludes file to include certain directories and exclude others. I was wondering, can I just specify / as the source and

strange behavior after moving target directory
i have a sync that i do daily on my home directory home directory -> external drive A i recently got a bigger external drive (B) and move my backup file tree from drive A to drive B. i gave the new drive the same name as the old drive, so all of the file paths will look the same to the backup script. My daily sync usually takes 3 minutes. After moving the backup tree, the first sync took 20

rsync + incremental changes files
Hi, Well, I need the procedure or how to do a full backup of archives to a directory. Then, do incremental backups in different directories. For example: source-dir to dest-dir a full backup. incremental of sources-dir and differential of backup-dir in `date +%m%h%y` Then, i should have a full backup in the dest-dir and incremental+diferential backup in every $DATE directory. Any ideas? I try

Rsync problem
All I am having a problem with rsyncing 2 directories in my network. Here is the situation: 1. I have a directory tree on the 1 server say: SOURCE 2. I have to rsync this directory tree on a backup server, say: Backup 3. This is a huge tree (about 8-9 GB) that grows by about 2-3 % a day. 4. What I did is... I gzipped the tree on a HD and restored it on the backup server 5. The file permissions

Incremental backups?
So I thought I'd get a head start for next week - I have a low-power Linux box that has a few samba shares mounted, and limited hard disk space. This box is connected to a tape library via SCSI card. I want to find the best way to create a full, then incremental backup of the samba mounts, directly to tape. Some of the samba mounts are appliances that cannot run any special

Backup of large filesystems >500GB
I've a small system that I use to support a number of churches. I provide web and email for them. My current server is running CentOS 6.3 with paired 1TB drives in a RAID1 configuration. It works well. One filesystem is very large, >500GB, and contains numerous large files: SQL, docs, church libraries in ebook and digital form, plus stored videos of church services. My problem is that

no backup for excluded files?

Question on --backup --backup-dir Switches For Incremental Backs
I current do some rsync backups with a command like so every day rsync -az -e ssh --stats --delete --exclude "stuff" / user@server:/home/user/ What I want to do is have some incremental backups in there in subdirectories. So, for example, something like this on the remote server /home/user/something.tuesday /home/user/something.friday I thought the --backup --backup-dir Switches were
