Saving ownership as non-root
Hello everybody!
Out of curiosity: What (backup) solutions do you use to let rsync store
device files and ownership permissions without root privileges?
I found out about "fakeroot" so far. Is there actually a practical use
for the "--super" option? I didn't find anything as fakeroot doesn't
need it...
Additionally it would be a nice idea to refer to

Several changes missing from [HEAD] fileflags.diff
Looking at http://rsync.samba.org/ftp/rsync/patches/fileflags.diff --
It looks like the changes from fileflags-fixes.diff patch were applied
to the patch from http://rsync.samba.org/ftp/rsync/rsync-patches-3.0.0.tar.gz
, but this entire chunk of the that original diff file was lost:

patches for copying atimes
Hi.
Here's a patch for copying the atimes of files when -t/--times is
given. I bumped the protocol to 29 since it sends more data over the
wire. It obviously does not send the atime if it's sending data to an
older rsync version.
It passes all the tests (including the added atime.test) for me on a:
Linux Debian/3.0 gcc 2.95.4 (debian), glibc 2.2.5 system.
Any questions/feedback? I

[PATCH] mknod: filter modes in mkfifo, mknod_b, mknod_c (RHBZ#1182463).
Since mkfifo, mknod_b, and mknod_c add the correct file type to the
modes of the resulting file, make sure the specified mode contains only
permissions bits.

improved atime patch
I posted a patch a few days ago that adds copying of atime. At that
time, it was just enabled with -t/--times. After some time, we have
figured out that that choice might not have been the best. Here's a
new version of the patch (relative to CVS) that adds -A/--copy-atime
instead. It also includes a test case.
Any feedback on this patch and/or the previous one that I posted?

meta data stored in separate file?
i found a couple messages in the archives relating to backups vs.
distribution and ownership issues without root privs that kinda touched on
the idea of storing meta info (ownership, modes, acls) in a separate file.
has anyone else looked at storing meta data in a side file of some sort?
it seems that it could be done all on the client side. send over files
with totally plain meta info and

Preserving uid/gid on remote machine with non-root permission
Is there a way to backup files to a remote machine on which I don't have
root permission, while preserving their uids/gids? I know that only the
super-user can set the owner and group of a file, so what I am actually
looking for is a tool that would store the actual uids/gids of all files
that are backuped by rsync in a kind of meta-file. This file could then
be used to restore the files

Might want to clarify that there is no loss of functionality here.

[PATCH 09/19] drm/radeon: handle lockup in delayed work, v2
Signed-off-by: Maarten Lankhorst <maarten.lankhorst at canonical.com>

V1 had a nasty bug breaking gpu lockup recovery. The fix is not
allowing radeon_fence_driver_check_lockup to take exclusive_lock,
and kill it during lockup recovery instead.

[RFC PATCH v1.2 08/16] drm/radeon: use common fence implementation for fences
Changes since v1:
- Fixed interaction with reset handling.
+ Use exclusive_lock, either with trylock or blocking.
+ Bump sw irq refcount in the recovery function to prevent fiddling
with irq registers during gpu recovery.
- Add radeon lockup detection to the default fence wait function.
