Setting variables for a "group of nodes" - how to approach?
Trying to learn Puppet, given a cfengine background. Am trying to understand the Puppet way of accomplishing the following: I have a lot of servers, that are organized into clusters (we call them silos). Each silo has a specific set of parameters (like IP addresses). I''d like to organize the silo information in some way that each server is associated with that information, and can

"self-awareness" from a definition?
Looking at Puppet for a new installation. Wondering about the following capability: Say I have a reference to some definition, where I call out a relationship: silo( webservers => "server1", databaseservers => "server2" ); (sorry if syntax is incorrect). Is it possible for the definition of this to trigger "server1" to be in a "webservers"

templating problems - rhel4, 0.22.3
Using RPMs for el4 (0.22.3). Been trying to get templates to work, but have found problems. I created a very small template, and this works well, variables substitute, great. I tried a much larger one (an httpd.conf), and puppetmaster crashed. the remote puppetd first reported an SSL certificate problem, then on seconds run, "cannot connect to server." Hacked the template down to

Acrobat Reader version for CentOS 3?
Having had a working version of Acrobat Reader, I upgraded to 7.0.5 a couple of days ago (without backing up the previous install, of course). Unfortunately, the acroread command fails with: GTK+ UI Toolkit libraries, ver. 2.4 or greater were not found. The (CentOS 3) standard libraries for gtk+ etc. are installed. Anyone know what is the most recent compatible version of Acrobat Reader for

Broken mirrors
My repojanitor updates broke this morning due to problems at at least a couple of mirror sites: ftp://mirror.stanford.edu/pub/mirrors/centos/4/updates/x86_64/RPMS/ ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/4/updates/x86_64/RPMS Appears the squirrelmail and openoffice updates there are some sort of symlink rather than plain files. Broke wget. -Alan =========== Alan Sparks, UNIX/Linux Systems

Jan 16 17:49:33 murowall kernel: Shorewall Shorewall:FORWARD:REJECT:IN=eth0 O UT=eth2
Marta, As Alan pointed out the loc->net policy is Continue, it should probably be loc->net ACCEPT. This is from Tom''s Shorewall Documentation... http://www.shorewall.net/Documentation.htm#Policy CONTINUE - The connection is neither ACCEPTed, DROPped nor REJECTed. CONTINUE may be used when one or both of the zones named in the entry are sub-zones of or intersect with another zone.

kernel: Page has mapping still set - continues
Been having this problem, and posted about it before. Thinking it was a memory issue, I've replaced all memory on the server. However, the problem has continued. Server is a Proliant DL380 (8GB RAM, 2 Xeon CPU), running CentOS 3.6, all patches up-to-date. Kernel is 2.4.21-40.ELsmp (problem seems to have first manifested on kernel 2.4.21-37.0.1.ELsmp). Disk is CCISS hardware RAID-5,

Sun JVM 1.5 and CentOS latest kernel - regress?
I've been running a lot of apps with Sun's 1.5.0_03 JVM on CentOS 3.6. After the latest kernel update 2.4.21-37.0.1.ELsmp is seems I'm starting to get hangs. Just like I used to a year ago on an earlier kernel release. It looks like the infamous futex bug: strace -p 22406 Process 22406 attached - interrupt to quit futex(0x821be34, FUTEX_WAIT, 15, NULL <unfinished ...> Anyone

CentOS 4: top default "solaris mode"
Is there a way to default "top" to Solaris mode for all users (without using a .toprc in every user's home dir)? We're not big fans of >100% CPU usage stats... Thanks. -- Alan Sparks, UNIX/Linux Systems Integration and Administration <asparks at doublesparks.net>

Missing latest kmod-xfs and kmod-drbd82?
Since December there have been several kernel updates to the centosplus repository for centos4... but no updates to kmod-xfs or kmod-drbd82. Latest kernel is 2.6.9-78.0.13.plus.c4, but latest kmod-xfs is 2.6.9_78.0.5.plus.c4. Latest drbd82 kmod is also for 78.0.5. I know there was a mention on the list that these modules are not kernel dependent anymore... but yum and rpm seem to indicate

ssh_authorized_key - same key, different accounts?
Puppet 0.24.8... I am trying to use ssh_authorized_key to create passwordless logins for a couple of accounts. The important thing to note is I''m trying to get the source ("root@somehost" below) as part of the key, and the same key needs to be added to two different accounts on the system. It appears that the resource name is the only place I can set the originating source
