CVS rsync hangs during local copy
Dear rsync people (particularly Wayne),
I am finding that the CVS version of rsync hangs during most, but not
all, local copies. The problem goes away if I pass --protocol=29, so
I'm guessing it is related to the incremental file-list sending.
The hanging seems to be timing-dependent. Increasing the verbosity
level seems to increase the chance of a hang. If I run rsync
repeatedly with the

Rewritten rsync man page
Dear Wayne, C Sights, and list,
I have started working on my rewritten version of the rsync man page.
So far, I have redone the top of the man page and the list of options;
I improved many of the one-line option descriptions. The yodl and man
versions of my man page are available here and here:

patchsync
Wayne,
I have just completed a much enhanced version of "patchsync", the tool
I have been using to synchronize my copy of acls.diff with my copy of
ACL-enabled rsync. It is a compelling alternative to "verify-patches"
for mere mortals who want to follow development of rsync branches.
Would you please consider mentioning it on the rsync Web site, in the
source tree, or both?

I need rsync + acl support for windows?
On 10/16/06, Chris Diphoorn <chris.diphoorn@intouchdirect.com.au> wrote:

Rsync's support for Windows ACLs is limited. What are you trying to
do? Copy files from Windows to Windows, preserving Windows ACLs? If
so, you might be better off using rsync to copy the files and another
tool to copy the ACLs.
Since rsync is meant first and foremost for Unix-like systems,

Kernel Question
OK- A dumb question. Will a "generic"(kernel.org) kernel work with Centos 4?
My reason for asking- I'm needing to upgrade from RH9, and would rather
go ahead and go with 4 for the 2.6 kernel, but I need a patched kernel
(Win4Lin), and I'm not sure they will offer a prepatched version (though
they probably will for EL4).
Thanks!

ACL support in rsync 2.6.6
Hi,
Can someone tell me the status of ext3 acl support in rsync?
I saw this post from may 2004 which seems to indicate there
is a patch.
http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2004-May/009466.html
But it still appears that 2.6.6 doesn't have any acl support
included. Is that true?
Does anyone know where to get the latest patch for 2.6.6 if it
even exists?
Thanks
Paul

Backing up two trees with corresponding files hard linked
Today I went to back up my computer to an external disk with rsnapshot.
I have two copies of the Linux kernel; a few files differ, but matching
files are hard-linked between the two trees to save space. Since I
didn't give -H to rsync, it is making a separate file on the backup disk
from each hard link on the source.
I had the understanding that -H used an O(n^2) algorithm to match up

Winelol
I downloaded a modified wine version. The problem is that I cant understand how to get it to work! Does anyone know a way to make it default? Or maybe how to open anything with it? Its called winelol, it is a prepatched wine made to play league of legends. Any help would be greatly appreciated!:)

Rsync itemizing "t" (should be "T") when lutimes fails on recreated symlink
IIUC, the new philosophy of symlink times is that -t preserves them to
the extent that they are settable; when they aren't, it's just as if -t
wasn't given. But rsync breaks this principle in the following case.
Suppose rsync is configured with HAVE_LUTIMES enabled but the lutimes
call doesn't actually work (I simulated this via the attached patch).
When rsync recreates a

Permissions causing full backups?
I am using rsync/rsnapshot on Windows XP (via cygwin) to backup to a mapped
share (/u) on a Linux server. I’m hoping to get this to work so that I
don’t have to open an XP share to the network for Linux “pull” backups.
My current setup doesn’t seem to give me incremental backups. See the “du”
output…

Rsync patch for default ACLs and executability
I wrote a patch for rsync 2.6.6 that changes two things:
(1) When the receiving rsync creates a file in a directory with a
default ACL and `--perms' is off, rsync uses the default ACL instead of
the umask to calculate the new file's permissions. All programs that
just use `open' and don't do an explicit `chmod' are forward-compatible
with default ACLs, but rsync always sets

cygwin rsync windows to windows ACL problem
I am having problems using rsync on cygwin to properly copy the

I am running: rsync -avPA //src_addr/some/path /local/dst/path/

rsync for incremental
Hi all,
I am able to copy the dir from one drive to another drive on local
machine using windowsXP.
Is there any command by which I can get only the updation of file ie only the incremental?.
Suppose I have a text file say ss.txt of 3KB in size and I have taken the
backup of this file. Now I am making the changes in to this file(ss.txt) by
adding 1KB of data. Now I want this 1KB data (in to a

get_local_name
Wayne,
I have redone get_local_name again (patch attached), this time to enable
rsync to remove a file to make way for a destination directory; this
resolves the "surprise" noted in David Tonhofer's diagram 2. I also
made it obey --keep-dirlinks when looking for a destination directory
and made various rearrangements. Tell me what you think, and if you
decide to commit my code,

Rsync 2.6.9pre2 tries to read ACLs of nonexistent files
Dear rsync people,
Today I tried to back up my computer using rsnapshot with the RPM
version of rsync-acl 2.6.9pre1 that I built. I tried twice, and both
times, rsync encountered some kind of assertion failure. I was trying
to reproduce the crash with rsync-acl 2.6.9pre2 and noticed a
different bug (described below); when I have a chance, I will go back
and investigate the crash further.
