/etc/passwd
I would like to write up brief tutorial/documentation on how to manage /etc/passwd using puppet. While this may seem pretty straight forward to some...the documentation is not. We have been able to create a manifest that defines all of our users "virtually" and are able to "realize" users and add them to the system(s) running puppetd. Is there a way to simply realize all users

2.6.3, 2.6.4 incompatibilities
I am wondering if there are known incompatibilities between 2.6.3 and 2.6.4? I have a debian box with 2.6.4 and a FC3 box with 2.6.3. Most of the time rsync works fine between the two but I am running this command on FC3 box: rsync -azvv --stats --delete --files-from=/root/.rsb2.tmp / nathan@debian:/home/backup/bkp.01 And I am getting this error message: building file list ... group change causing failure
OK, I searched through the archives and didn't find anything so I must be doing something stupid. I just compiled 2.6.3 and am trying to get it to run on linux 2.6.8.1 kernel with a more or less fedora core2 environment. I was trying between two systems but I have narrowed it down to what I believe is a pretty simple case. Here is my setup/test: Last login: Mon Oct 4 19:30:49 2004

run firefox via an ssh tunnel
If the point is to access a specific web site only the remote machine can get to, you can also do it with port forwarding: ssh -L 8000:ip_of_web_site_to_access_from_remote:443 remote_machine and then locally run any browser, and access https://localhost:443 (assuming it's https. If it's plain http, use "http" and 80). Note that you'll be breaking some aspects of https

Serving Samba through a Firewall
All I am looking to serve a SAMBA filesystems to client at the other side of a firewall, does anyone know what ports/services, need to be opened just to deliver the filesystem. The client will initiate the connection and hopefully use TCP, not UDP ( is that possible) Regards Stuart

rsync huge files from cygwin to linux stalls - bug?
hi there i'm trying to backup a 3gig directory with about 100.000 files from a windows pc to a linux box with rsync but the process stalls (hangs). setting a "--timeout 60" shows me that the i/o stalls. doing the same with smaller directories works perfectly but the whole 100.000 files seem to be too much. the process hangs before the file list is done. rsync doesn't start
