How to handle INT8 data
How many unique idenfiiers do you have?
If they are large (in terms of bytes) but you don't have that many of them
(eg the total possible number you'll ever have is < INT_MAX), you could
store them as factors. You get the speed of integers but the labeling of
full "precision" strings. Factors are fast for joins.

Mounting SMB shares on SGI IRIX
Hello,
We have been successfully using Samba to access Unix filesystems on Windows
computers. So far we only had SGI IRIX computers and very few Windows
computers.
Recently we have started adding Windows clients to the network and now we
wish to do the reverse i.e. access Windows shared areas from SGI computers,
mainly for backup purposes.
We are using Networker to take automated backups.

How to handle INT8 data
Hi,
I do have < INT_MAX.
This looks attractive but since they are unique identifiers, storing
them as factor will be likely to be counter-productive. (a string
version + an int32 for each)
I was looking to https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/csvread/index.html
This looks like a good feet for my needs.
Any chances such an external package for int64 would be integrated in core ?

How to handle INT8 data
Well I definitely cannot use them as numeric because join is the main
reason of those identifiers.
About int64 and bit64 packages, it's not a solution, because I am
releasing a dataset for external users. I cannot ask them to install a
package in order to exploit them.
I have to be very carefull when releasing the data. If a user just use
read.csv functions, they by default cast the

R CMD check errors
Hello,
I wrote a library which seems to work on my PC, and on different Unix
systems.
As it is written in the "Writing R Extensions" manual, I execute a R CMD
check on my library.
I have always the same errors messages:
* checking S3 generic/method consistency ... WARNING

I would like to use pam filters to authenticate users on LDAP 2.3 with
Samba-3.0.26a on a Fedora Core 7
For information, samba is compiled with the --with-ldapsam option (2.0
LDAP schema)
Basic LDAP authentication works well, when I type 'getent passwd', all
my users are displayed.
Now I want to use the pam_filter option in the /etc/ldap.conf file, but
I can't make it work

How Dovecot 2 create folders and subfolders ( MBOX format ) with TB ?
Hello
When creating new IMAP folder with thunderbird and Dovecot
configured with the std MBOX format dovecot create a file in
mbox format and so it is not possible to create a subfolder of
this folder.
If you ask to create a NEW subfolder of the form : TOTO/TATA
Dovecot create a directory TOTO containing a mbox file TATA.
Very useful :-)
I suppose the "/" separator is parsed by

I put the idea below into a function that gives nicer looking results.
Here's the new code:

allnames <- data.frame(names=character(), filename=character(), line

do carriers detect unusual / unauthorized VoIP calling patterns?
All-
Recently an Asterisk server we host was hacked and used to route some unauthorized calls. We have since improved our
security measures, including installation of fail2ban.
The interesting thing is the way in which this was discovered. The unauthorized calls were occurring intermittently
last Thurs evening thru Sat morning. On Sat morning, some of our employees were attempting to log-in

newbie questions re. setting up a 2-node HA cluster
Hi Folks,
Following up a bit on the GFS vs. EVMS thread from last month...
Hi Folks,
I''m about to migrate from a dedicated RH9 server (mostly email, list
serving, web serving) to a couple of new machines that I''ll be deploying
in a colocation arrangement - with a lot more control over configuration.
My current box is pretty basic - using RAID-1 and nightly backups to
