File changed during save....
hi!
i want to use rsync for backup to central storage.
from emc networker i know some nice feature - it`s telling about "changed
files during save" - i.e. i
know which files have changed their contents while being backed up. for
example you can see if
shutdown of some oracle database was forgotten and that database was backed
up online accidentally.
what`s the rsync equivalent to

Logging rsync transfers
Hello
I run rsync on a server and I backup our office PCs to it using cwRsync
on Windows PCs. The command I use to backup these PCs is:
rsync -vbalz --stats --backup-dir=/yesterday_backups/
--exclude-from="exclude_list.txt" --files-from="include_list.txt"
--rsh="ssh" . username@mydomain.com:/path/to/folder
On the server, I have the rsync service started at

getting "diff" of directory trees
Given two directories "foo" and "fooprime", can I have rsync make a file
or directory "d", that contains the differences between these two
directories such that I can take d and apply it to foo to get fooprime,
or take fooprime and reverse-apply d to it to get foo?
I'm not sure that the --backup and --backup-dir options to rsync will
give me exactly what I want.

Number of files to be transferred?
I'm writing a wrapper around a large number of rsyncs that need to
happen, and it would be great if I could parse the output of a running
rsync and find out how far along it is. To do this, I would need to
know how many files the rsync is going to transfer. If I run 'rsync
-avz --progress', it tells me how many files it is considering, but not
how many it actually needs to update.

RSYNC via pipe/socket ?
Hello !
I`m trying to find a way to use lzo compression for the data being transferred by rsync.
rsync only supports gzip (or maybe ssh -c, which is also zlib), which gives cpu intensive workload - and
this cannot be exchanged by a commandline param like we have with tar (--use-compress-program=....)
i like to use lzo because it does much faster compression than gzip.

logging problem
Yep I tried those two options, and nothing...
Even if the pre-user conf files have a log file in the same directory,
which I touch before trying, messages keep going to syslog... I tried
with 666 permissions on rsyncd.log too just to make sure...
The following is one of the user's conf file, hope theres a clue. Thanks!
log file = /home/pluto/rsyncd.log <<< This is the problem!!

Mapped Drive
I am having trouble running rsync over a mapped drive. Basically it only
copies whole files. I use the -rvcS switches. Any suggestions?
TIA

rsync deleting symbolic link unexpectedly
I''m running 2.6.6 on a red hat EL3 system.
using the following command,
rsync -rlptDvzL --stats --include=a/ --include=a/dir/
--include=a/dir/symlink/ --include=a/dir/symlink/dir2/
--include=a/dir/symlink/dir2/dir3/ --exclude=''**'' /export/stuff

I expect the "symlink" (which is really a symbolic link to a directory)

Using --remove-source-files with backup?
I have a scenario where I am copying from a local system to remote target and need to remove the local source files once they have been successfully transfered.
--remove-source-files works fine for this.
An issue has come up in that I need to be able to backup the removed local source files as well.
With rsync 2.6.9 I tried:
rsync --remove-source-files --backup-dir=/archive –abv (source)

Rsync patch for default ACLs and executability
I wrote a patch for rsync 2.6.6 that changes two things:
(1) When the receiving rsync creates a file in a directory with a
default ACL and `--perms' is off, rsync uses the default ACL instead of
the umask to calculate the new file's permissions. All programs that
just use `open' and don't do an explicit `chmod' are forward-compatible
with default ACLs, but rsync always sets

Rsync help needed...
Hello,
I was reading your posts about RSYNC. We have a massive Oracle schema lots
of datafiles about 750 GB size. We do rsync datafiles from source to target
server but everytime we cleanup the datafiles on the target server and do
rsync every 2 weeks. On the target side mostly the datafiles will be same
but on source we might have added few datafiles or made some changes in data
and as such the

lgging problem
Hi,
When I have my rsync daemon running, I get all log messages in a custom
format in the file /var/log/rsyncd.log.
This is very convenient as I can cron a script to grep it and mail me a
summary of activity every day and then create a fresh file.
I have now switched to using rsync over ssh, so I stopped the rsync daemon,
and every user has an authorised ssh key and a *custom* rsyncd.conf (with

ACL support in rsync 2.6.6
Hi,
Can someone tell me the status of ext3 acl support in rsync?
I saw this post from may 2004 which seems to indicate there
is a patch.
http://lists.samba.org/archive/rsync/2004-May/009466.html
But it still appears that 2.6.6 doesn't have any acl support
included. Is that true?
Does anyone know where to get the latest patch for 2.6.6 if it
even exists?
Thanks
Paul

Status of --ignorcase option in main tree/build?
Hi,
I'm very interested in learning the status of the --ignorecase patch
being included in the main tree... is there a reason it still isn't in
there?
For anyone who is forced to dealing with backing up windows boxes, this
is a big problem, and I can't believe that it isn't affecting a lot of
people...
Or maybe there is a simple workaround?

I'm new to the rsync list. I've been searching for two days and have

rsync server service provider
Hi,
I want to backup data from my computer located at home to a server
located anywhere else and accessible through the Internet at any time.
Does anybody know any provider offering a storage service and an rsync
server service ?
Thank you very much for your answer ...
