Monitoring filessytem access
When somebody is hammering on the system, I want to be able to detect who''s
doing it, and hopefully even what they''re doing.
I can''t seem to find any way to do that. Any suggestions?
Everything I can find ... iostat, nfsstat, etc ... AFAIK, just show me
performance statistics and so forth. I''m looking for something more
granular. Either *who* the

Mount CiFS as root on Linux
Could it be possible nowadays (understand: with the newest kernels and
tools) to mount the root filesystem of a Linux client over CiFS? Just
like what is already possible for a long time with NFS.
The server would be Samba, not Windows.
Just wondering...

mount.cifs - everything is owned by root (when mounting 2003 shares)
I just tried to mount Windows 2003 share.
I used the following command to mount it:
mount.cifs //10.1.1.1/G$ /mnt/2003/ -o user=admin,domain=MYDOMAIN
The mount is fine, I can read the files.
However, each and every file is owned by root, which is not true.
Moreover, each and every file and folder has the same permissions, which
is also not true.
I can change the owners and permissions, but

Zombie processes being created when console buffer is full
We have been researching stuck zombie processes in our libvirt lxc
containers. What we found was:
1) Each zombie’s parent was pid 1. init which symlinks to systemd.
2) In some cases, the zombies were launched by systemd, in others the
zombie was inherited.
3) While the child is in the zombie state, the parent process (systemd)
/proc/1/status shows no pending signals.
4) Attaching gdb to

How to prevent users from deleting users from domain via usrmgr.exe ???
hi,
weird thing:
i thought when commenting out "delete user script" and "ldap delete dn"
nobody is able to delete users from the domain.
what happens: users are deleted, to be more specific their samba
attributes are deleted but not their posix values.
i won't let our admins delete users from our domain becaus we have
another management to add/delete users to/from a

slug of zombies
after booting a CentOS 4.2 system
I have a bunch of zombies...
root 2828 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 14:41 0:00 [chvt]
<defunct>
My read from googling this is chvt stems from something that involves a
shell.
They ***may*** have been created from my attempts to start mysqld which
isn't working (I will start another thread) but no efforts to kill them
off are working...

[UNDERSTANDING] BDC and Trusted Domain
hi list,
just for my knowledge -> we have a working PDC / BDC infrastructure for
our domain DOMA, where PDC trusts another PDC from DOMB (all samba v3).
when PDC from DOMA goes down, is the trust still valid or do we have to
setup the trust on *both* DCs from DOMA (net rpc trustdom establish DOMB
... )? is that possible at all?
thx&greez

The single WINS problem: question
hello
I've been reading the thread
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?t=113286376900001&r=1&w=2) and I have
the same limitation with WINS in a PDC/BDC.
That's why I have the following (experimental) setup:
PDC ==> wins support = yes, passdb backend: master ldap
BDC ==> wins support = yes, passdb backend: slave ldap
I configured some of my XP clients to use both WINS servers

vfs_shadow and [homes]
hi,
i was able to successfully run vfs_shadow on a samba share with win xp
shadow copy client. but i think it?s currently not implemented that one
could export [homes] with this vfs object, because AFAIK each @GMT-snap
has to resist directly under the samba share. but [homes] is a virtual
share representing different shares (depending on users).
has anybody hints about using vfs_shadow with

-DIdmap_rid_support_trusted_domains
hi,
i have a question about winbind, idmap_rid and trusted domains. at
sambaxp jerry said it's possible to have idmap_rid working with trusted
domains. this is what we would like to have here.
smbd -b doesn't show this compile option on 3.0.14a rpm (SuSE). may be
this is normal, but how do i ensure that this option is in my binary w/
testing too much :) or how can i compile it

[HELP] Rsync to remote machine sometimes produces different binaries
hi,

my command looks like the following:
/usr/bin/rsync -W --progress --rsync-path=/usr/local/bin/rsync -e ssh
--delete --force -av /data/ machine2:/data/machine1/
after rsyncing both machines, some files differ !
i verified these differences with "diff",

Réf. : Re: SAMBA Groups and Permissions
I confirm that Malte M?ller says.
If you want to set multiple group acces, you must use ACL.
the valid user parameter in smb.conf force the right of directory but the
unix right is only for group user.

Xp Home hack + Domain join
Hello fellows,
Does anyone of you has found the hack to permit win xp home edition to
join a domain controller.
I found somewhere on the net a software that does this.
But it cost 145 $ US, so like the upgrade... ( the only difference in
that i will not give the money to Bill Gates)
My problem is with the password modification.
Every times someone does change his password, he has to go onto the
