rsync memory usage, paid feature request
Hello, The company I work for uses rsync for backups from client computers, the memory usage is a problem for a lot of them since they're already busy doing other important things (databases, web serving, etc). >From the FAQ: --- out of memory The usual reason for "out of memory" when running rsync is that you are transferring a _very_ large number of files. The size of the

Utility to zero unused blocks on disk
DBAN is obsolete. NIST 800-88 for some time now says to use secure erase or enhanced security erase or crypto erase if supported. Other options do not erase data in remapped sectors. Chris Murphy

Ugh on new bios.
Just so others know. On my EVGA motherboard the option to boot removable media didn't work on my usb flash drive with syslinux on it. Yesterday I tried updating the version of syslinux and seeing if that would wok. Frustrated with it not working I moaned and groaned and my brother decided to look for options in the bios that I might have missed. He couldn't find anything. But I decided to

ISO mag card encoding and writing
We have a potential requirement to produce a limited number of embossed PVC cards with magnetic encoding for an internal project. We are considering obtaining a read/write device (likely USB) suitable for encoding HICO magnetic stripes. Has anyone here any experience with suitable hardware and software that runs on CentOS-6? If so then what was used and what problems were encountered getting

Backup PC or other solution
I list, I'm new with backup ops and I'm searching a good system to accomplish this work. I know that on centos there are bacula and amanda but they are too tape oriented. Another is that they are very powerfull but more complex. I need a solution for small office for disk storage and I found Backup PC. Many people say that it is great for small stuff and for great number of data. What do

Is there any performance problem with hard links in ZFS?
Is there any performance problem with hard links in ZFS? I have a large storage. There will be near 50000 hard links for every file. Is it ok for ZFS? May be some problems with snapshots(every 30 minutes there will be a snapshot creating)? What about difference in speed while working with 50000 hardlinks or 50000 different files? ps: It would be very useful if you give me some links about

Lots of zero-byte hard link files in cur (and new/tmp), cannot see messages in folder
Hello, I have an el-cheapo shared hosting account on Dreamhost, and have had it for a very long time. For the most part everything usually works fairly well, considering I do keep a lot of folders, and mail, on some of my accounts. They are running dovecot, but still don't have a response as to the version, or doveconf -n output yet. My problem is, one of my most used folders, which was

Questions about hardlinks, alternate storage and compression
Hi all, I have some questions about hardlinks, alternate storage and compression. I already scanned the list for related information and I have an idea of how things works, but I would like to have a definite answer. System spec: - CentOS 6.6 x64 - dovecot-2.0.9-8.el6_6.4.x86_64 RPM package/version - sdbox mail store 1) About hardlinks: when sending the same message to two different

ext4, 4k sector alignment
I've mentioned this problem before but put off doing anything about it and maybe now someone can suggest the best solution. I have a 3-member RAID1 set where one of the members is periodically swapped and rotated offsite. The filesystem contains a backuppc archive which has millions of hardlinks that make it impractical to copy with a file-oriented approach. The current filesystem is

feature request, hardlink progress......
I'm copying a partition that has a bunch of hardlink based snapshots (-aPH). I think there's about 250,000 files in each backup and between 100 and 200 snapshots. Earlier today, I saw the files had completed and it was making all the hardlinks. I thought it would be "not long" but it's been making hardlinks for 12 hours (at least). There's only 36Gb in snapshot, the

rsync based on checksum only
Is it possible to tell rsync *not* to use file names, date stamps, etc and only use the checksum for deciding if a file is the same? the remote machine "normalizes" a set of file names to remove all punctuation marks and forces all file names to lower case. The files themselves are unchanged. --checksum looks promising but it does not say anything about file names: -c, --checksum

re-linking hard links
Hello, I have a situation where I have numerous files with numerous hard links to each of them on an ext3 RHEL4.2 system. Some of these files are duplicates of the others. I would like to re-link all of the duplicates to point to a single inode. For instance if file1 has hardlinks link1 and link2, and file2 has hardlinks link3 and link4, I need to change it so that link1, link2 (these

make test fails if rsync is not already installed.
Hi, I noticed a weird problem with "make test" on rsync-2.5.5. It seems that the testsuite only works if rsync is already installed (presumably an older version...). I think the tests intend to run the rsync that was just built and not the previously existing rsync, but is not what appears to happen. The test script output contains messages like this: Running: "rsync -aHvv

Something other than dotlock for uidlist locking?
If I read the code correctly, only dotlocks are supported for locking of dovecot-uidlist. And I don't see any settings in the config file for it. As it turns out, dotlocks are very slow on my system, due to their implementation via hardlinks. Would it be possible to support other locking mechanisms for locking of the uidlist file? -jdb

hard links across snapshots/subvolumes are actually a bad idea.
I''ve been thinking about this for a while, from a perspective of how to make it work by allocating i-node numbers from a global pool, but yesterday I realized that offering the feature would be a bad idea because it violates the semantics of file systems. I will be happy to expand on that point if anyone disagrees with it. dln -- "It is merely a matter of persistence." --
