how to reduce rsync system usage
hi all
we're using rsync to backup our web server at the moment using it in a
cron job
the server we are using to receive all the sync files is a live but not
heavily used linux machine
but rsync still takes up more resources than we want it to
it takes up to 95% (fluctuating) cpu load and a fair bit of memory too
the cron job uses nice -19 rsync
but that doesn't seem to do anything,

Hi all!
I'm syncing a windows share from a NetApp filer to a local partition on
my RHEL3 box. I observe the following behavior:
- rsync syncs more than neccessary, files that haven't changed since years
- files that have been synced, aged for an hour or two on the netapp host
Environment:
cifs share mounted to /backup/sync (mount -t smbfs -o
username=user,password=pwd //server/share

USB key problems on enterprise systems
Just came up with some interesting (read: frustrating) problems on
RHEL3 and RHEL4 today at work, and I've confirmed one of the problems
on my up-to-date CentOS4 system at home. I was forced into releasing
some RHEL3 systems to replace our aging RH9 systems without time for
adequate testing, and that leads to problems like these.
On our legacy RH9 systems, mounting a USB key is no problem,

Puppet on RHEL3 - ruby-1.8.6 RPM
Hey folks,
I know there''s an old thread about this, and the provided solution to
make puppet work on RHEL3 was to recompile a more recent version of
ruby.
However, I think it would be nice to upgrade ruby from 1.6.8 to 1.8.6
with RPM, so here''s a quick tip for those who have to manage RHEL3
servers and would like to do it with puppet:

Puppet on RHEL3
Out of curiosity, is anybody using puppet on RHEL3 (or Centos 3) ? If
so, how did you get it to work ? Did you build a ruby-1.8.x or does
puppet work on the 1.6.x ruby that ships with RHEL3 ?
thanks for any pointers,

CentOS 3.9
Hi,
Red Hat started releasing security advisories and update packages that are
part of RHEL3 U9. Still, on RHN there are no RHEL3 U9 ISO images released
yet.
As usual, CentOS will make available CentOS 3.9 when it is deemed ready.
So there is no need to ask when it is going to be released :)
Kind regards,

RHEL 3 and OCFS 1.0.9-12 / 1.0.11-1
Is the following statement still valid for either OCFS 1.0.9-12 or OCFS
1.0.11-1?
The following is from one of the questions put forward by Derek Suzuki on

Samba 3.0.4 on RHEL3
There have been several issues fixes since the 3.0.2 release of Samba. One
of the most important issues is a problem with password changing after
applying the patch described in the Microsoft KB828741 article to Windows
clients.
I want to run Samba 3.0.4 on RHEL3. The version provided by RedHat is
samba-3.0.2-6.3E. I can't find any other RPMs or SRPMs for RHEL3. Any help

Puppet agent problem on Ubuntu
I''m in the process of setting up puppet and experiencing some issues.
I''m running Ubuntu 11.04 desktop and server in two seperate VM''s. I''ve
installed puppet master (2.6.4) and puppet (2.6.4). The puppet master
and agent are happily working together.
I''m running the example in the book Pro Puppet. This is the first
example;

RHEL3, winbind, "Error looking up domain users"
Hello,
I've been attempting to get this working all day. :)
I have an RHEL3 machine connected to a Windows 2000 PDC
as a domain member. I'm running samba 3.0.21c, compiled from an SRPM:
# rpm -q samba
samba-3.0.21c-1
When I try to list my users, I get this:
# wbinfo -u
Error looking up domain users
Exit 1
Similarly, `getent passwd` fails to show any SMB users. But

A couple more minor questions about OCFS and RHE L3
Sort of a followup...
We've been running OCFS in sync mode for a little over a month now,
and it has worked reasonably well. Performance is still a bit spotty, but
we're told that the next kernel update for RHEL3 should improve the
situation. We might eventually move to Polyserve's cluster filesystem for
its multipathing capability and potentially better performance, but at least

Centos 4
Has anyone done an upgrade from RHEL3 to RHEL4? Is this likely to break
a lot of things? How long will Centos be supporting version 3? I just
installed Centos 3.4 two weeks ago!
The only problem I'm having with Centos is that the perl is a bit old. I
have errors with spamassassin. So far bugzilla for spamassasin is
blaming it on the version of perl included in RHEL3 and bugs in the

RHE L3 -- OCFS 1.0.9-12 and 1.0.12
Running database in ASYNC mode in RHEL 3 has a potential risk of redo logs failure due to some short io's.
A note from

says that the above mentioned problem is fixed in OCFS 1.0.9-12
"RELEASE 1.0.9-12

Migrate RHEL3 to Cent3
I have several RHEL3 WS machines that were installed here running as
servers and their RHN subscriptions were never kept up. Now that I
have become responsible for them I would like to move them to CentOS
as I can keep them updated as needed.
Some of them I can simply migrate to new machines, but a few I can
not. Is it possible to simply upgrade a RHEL3 to the latest CentOS 3?
