rsync'd destination much larger than source
Hello.
Recently, I started using rsync to backup files in my root partition on an
Ensim
box over to a remote machine. The remote machine 'pulls' from the Ensim box
using the following:
rsync -arvzx --exclude=/proc --exclude=/tmp --exclude=/mnt --delete
--delete-excluded -e ssh 192.168.0.1:/ /bkup/rootpart/
The problem is, if I 'df' the Ensim box, it reports that the entire

not always making hard links?
I'm using 2.6.3pre1 to transfer a rather large Debian archive
(126GB, more than 30 million files). It contains about 450 daily
snapshots, where unchanged files are hardlinked between the snapshots
(so many files have hunderds of links).
It's been running for some time now, and I found that while it's far
from done, it's already used 165GB on the receiving end. Investigation

preview release: 2.6.0pre1
OK, I packaged up the current CVS as our first preview release for
2.6.0. You can grab it here:
http://samba.org/ftp/rsync/preview/rsync-2.6.0pre1.tar.gz
The MD5 checksum is:

There is not currently a .sig file for the package, but I'm looking into
that next.
Please test this and let me know if we have any remaining issues

Bogus rsync "Success" message when out of disk space
Patches welcome, eh, Paul?
Upon further (belated) investigation, there are 2 affected places
in receiver.c with this error message. Both call write_file().
And write_file is called only in those two places. So that is the
appropriate location to patch. Especially since the obvious fix is
to use the rewrite code already there for the sparse file writes.

new to R: question about nlme
Hi all,
I am a PhD student in sociology, studying in Essen, Germany. I am doing an
empirical research with data on three (hierarchical) levels: Individuals
within schools within regions. The data are very sparse with a lot of
schools containing only one individual. In addition the dependent variable
is dichotomous, so that a logistic regression would be appropriate. There
are independent variables

Rgenerating headers
Hi
So far when I have streamed Vorbis, the headers (the 3 first
frames/packets) was not included in the stream, but communicated
out of band typically in an SDP file as unparsed A-lines.
Rethinking that concept, I'm wondering if it is really necessary
to do it that way. Isn't it possible in a platform independent
way to regenerate useable headers on the client side using

Problems with Starting Winbind after upgrading!
Hi,
first i?ve installed SuSE 9.1 with the default rpms (heimdal 0.9.1rc3, samba 3.0.2a with winbind). I?ve configured the system with winbind to the user accounts from my Win2003 Server. All this works always max. 1 day. After this day I can?t connect to my shares on the samba server. After this I upgraded to 3.0.11 with the RPMs from de.samba.org for SuSE. I installed this rpms but Winbind

[Patch] Require extra --stats to emit heap statistics
Since the heap statistics were added, I have viewed thousands of rsync
reports (with --verbose and --stats), and not once have I had a need
for them. So for me, they're just noise.
Here is a 3-part patch to v2.5.6 that treats --stats in a similar
fashion to --verbose in that additional --stats will get you more
statistics. For this initial case, there's only one additional level

Vorbis as a standard
Hi
I'm trying push for companies and government institutions to
start using Vorbis as an alternative to MP3 and to some extend
AAC so they as a benefit can ignore rigid license schemes and
expensive royalty payments. In principle it ought to be a
downhill job, but it has turned out to be a lot more difficult
than expected.
The biggest obstacle for government institutions and to some

Website for Ogg/Vorbis support for MPEG4IP

I have created a small website trying to document my Ogg/Vorbis support for MPEG4IP.
You can find it here.

cvs problem...
hello everyone!
i have a problem checking out the icecast cvs. the checkout stalls after
pulling timing/timing.h (no matter which module, they all seem to depend
on it). i have to kill it after a while.
am i doing anything wrong, or is your cvs botched ?
for now, i'm using a nightly snapshot, but i can't find ices2 in it, so
i tried to pull cvs. btw, the chroot feature is cool. i

As another poster pointed out recently, it's been a long time since
2.5.6 was released (Jan 28 2003).
Many recent replies to questions posted to this list are variants
of "It's already fixed in CVS".
Are there any particular reasons for holding

File that "vanish"es between readdir and stat is not IO error
Using rsync 2.6.0 with --verbose and doing a pull.

The file was a temporary file that was being deleted just as
the rsync was run. So while the file list was being built,
it was there when the directory was read but had vanished

--keep-dirlinks in combination with --one-file-system
I've been using the --keep-dirlinks feature of 2.6.3pre1. I also
use -x (--one-file-system) and --delete-after.
The symlinked directories on the receiver are symlinked to a
partition other than the one where the target of the rsync resides
(that's the whole point of this nifty --keep-dirlinks feature).
I discovered that the symlinked directories are not being processed
for deletions.

Shorten long lines in man page options summary
One thing that's bugged me is that some of the man page lines in the
options summary are longer than 79 chars and wrap onto the next line.
These are just one line summaries (detailed description appear later)
so they can, and should, be terse.
Here's an edited diff showing my proposed changes (and a 79 char ruler):
