Solved & Thanks: Multiple Win95 usernames...
The other day I asked how to solve the problem where my NT domain username is <PHILIPH> and my samba username is <philip>. Several replied indicating the "username map" option in smb.conf (can't believe I missed it). Anyway, by adding the following line to smb.conf: usrname map = /path/to/username.map.file and then adding the following line to the above referenced

thank you wayne, andrew, paul and everyone else
For me, rsync is an indispensable tool. I don't know what I'd do without it. Rsync and OpenSSH make our open systems possible. Of course, we wouldn't NEED them so much if we had better distributed file systems, but let's keep this an upbeat message. :-) I'd like to thank Andrew and Paul for giving birth to it, Wayne for nurturing it, and everyone else for providing

6.2 release: a thank you
Gents I would like to express my appreciation for the unbelievably quick release of Centos 6.2. Thanks a million! You managed to release 6.2 some 10 days after 6.1. Johnny, you are not that ugly after all :-). Louis

oplocks and samba 2.2.7
About two months ago our sysadmin upgraded to samba 2.2.7 and we have not had any oplock problems since. A heartfelt thanks from the University of Wisconsin in Madison to the Samba team for all their hard work. If our hundreds of users understood what was going on behind the scenes, they'd be thanking you too. --- Sam Barasch Computer Systems Support Department of Biostatistics

need mirrors for samba.anu.edu.au
The department of computer science at ANU is looking at networking costs. One big cost is the network traffic charges for samba.anu.edu.au. Currently it is costing about $1000 per month in international traffic charges (at 20c/meg). Note that we only pay for incoming data. To try and reduce the cost we are going to need to put in a mirror of the Samba web pages and ftp site in the US. I'm

Wow! Double wow!
I'm running CentOS 6 (6.5 iirc) on my wife's machine, which I've been updating pretty much every day. Today yum got 425 packages! Somewhere a dam must have broken. Sometimes some of us don't appreciate how much work the developers do. Strength to their arms, and many heartfelt thanks! -- Beartooth Staffwright, Not Quite Clueless Power User Remember I know little (precious

Mounting folders with spaces in their names
I still have not been able to mount a folder called New Stuff in smbfs. I have tried: mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge, password=foobar //MP3/New Stuff mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge, password=foobar //MP3/New_Stuff mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge, password=foobar //MP3/new_stuff Nothing seems to work. The computer is called MP3 and the folder I want to open is called New Stuff. Its right

Keep the politics out, please?
With this post, I run the risk of causing more of the thing that I speak against. I still think it's important to say it. CentOS mailing list is a technical forum. It is not a political forum. Just reading a thread on bitcoins and the entire thread quickly turned into a political thread with people bitching about everything from Chase Bank to the Russians, and that's just crap.

[patch] user@host in AllowUsers
This is a port of a patch I contributed to ssh 1.2.23 in May 1998. I have missed the functionality after moving to OpenSSH so I have updated the patch and hope OpenSSH might accept it. The patch allows sshd_config to have lines like: AllowUsers root at localhost AllowUsers tridge@* AllowUsers guest at 192.168.2.* DenyUsers badguy@* etc. I found this useful for restricting users to only login

rsync over ssh - lockups with pipe()
For a couple of years people have been reporting intermittent problems with rsync over ssh freezing during a large transfer (typically several GB). I have now gotten to the bottom of these problems, and have written a small test program which demonstrates a deadlock in sshd when doing large bi-directional transfers. Luckily the problem is easily solved by modifying sshd to use socketpair() instead

How to do a time-stratified case-crossover analysis for air pollution data?
Dear Experts, I am trying to do a time-stratified case-crossover analysis on air pollution data and number of myocardial infarctions. In order to avoid model selection bias, I started with a simple simulation. I'm still not sure if my simulation is right. But the results I get from the "ts-case-crossover" are much more variable than those from a glm. Is this: a. Due to

ZtDummy vs Hardware
I was wondering what could be pros and cons of ztdummy vs proper timer device (i.e. X100P). I am going to set up an asterisk server in europe (to do trunking, to save bandwith) and I was wondering if it'll be OK to get it going with ztdummy. Furthermore, I have only a 1024/256kbps PPPOE DSL link and I need to squeeze 12 channels through, I was wondering which codec would be suitable

autocomplete question
I''ve just started using the unbelievably easy and cool auto-complete feature. Does anyone know if you can make it search only from the start of the string (or from the beginning of each word)? By default it seems to do a complete search of the strings - typing MI returns both "Mike Jones" and "Mary Smith". I have to believe this will be much slower as the number of

Samba4 reaches the "Susan" stage
Samba4 reached an important milestone tonight, as I installed it for my wife to use as her file server for all of her important documents, email, the book she is working on etc. Those of you who have been around Samba development for a while will know that my wife tends to be the first test user of major new versions of Samba, and she volunteered again this time. Susan played a large part in the
