Help: File is present (via Samba) but cannot be opened?
When I mount a Windows XP partition (NTFS) on my SuSE 9.1 machine via
Samba 3.0.4, I find some files can be listed (via "ls") but mysteriously
cannot be opened, even though the file permissions appear fine. What
is a good way to track down this sort of problem?
Here's an example where I "cd" into a samba-mounted directory and try to
open a file that I know is present. It

Crosstabbing multiple response data
Using R version 2.4.1 (2006-12-18) on Windows, I have a dataset which resembles this:
id att1 att2 att3
1 1 1 0
2 1 0 0
3 0 1 1
4 1 1 1
ratings <- data.frame(id = c(1,2,3,4), att1 = c(1,1,0,1), att2 = c(1,0,0,1), att3 = c(0,1,1,1))
I would like to get a cross tab of counts of co-ocurrence, which might resemble this:

how to add a child to a child in XML
Hi,
XML doesn't use the `$` to access child nodes. Instead use either `[name]` to get a list of children of that name or `[[name]]` to get the just the first child of that name encountered in the genealogy. Thus for your example...
> root$child1
NULL
> root[['child1']]
<child1 name1="A" name2="B" name3="C"/>
On the other hand, you might

Modify objects in function
Dear R community,
I do know, that an R function is constructing a copy of any object passed as argument into a function. I program on a larger S4 project for a package, and I arrived at a point where I have to think a little harder on implementation style (especially to spare users complex object handling).
I have a function foo(), taking as input arguments two S4 objects of different class

how to add a child to a child in XML
Hi,
It's a reasonable question. The answer is that it actually is included, but there are many instances across packages where multiple functions are documented on a single help page. The following brings up such a page... (for XML_3.98-1.9)
> library(XML)
> ?newXMLNode
You can see the same on line...

how to add a child to a child in XML
Big thanks. newXMLNode works great. Wonder why it is not included in the documentation.
There is newXMLDoc and newXMLNamespace, but no mention of newXMLNode.

how to add a child to a child in XML
Just to clarify and hopefully catch the attention of the maintainer:
The newXMLNode function is not mentioned in:
https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/XML/XML.pdf
which supposedly describes all functions in the package.

is a bug fix, or perhaps whether I should go back a
version or so.
In summary:

bug report: bus error on Mac OS/X 10.2.3
When I run "rsync -a" to mirror a large directory structure on Mac OS/X
10.2.4, it always (100%) produces a bus error. Small directory structures
work fine.
The computer in question has 768 MB RAM and 10 GB free disk space, so
memory is not a problem. This is rsync 2.5.2 supplied with Mac OS/X.
The command I ran today was:

DEST=/Volumes/AlbusBackups
sudo rsync -av -n --exclude

If I use rsync v2 to transfer data from BoxA to BoxB everything works fine. However, if I use rsync v3 to transfer the data, the following error is reported :
rsync: mkstemp "/path/to/somefile/file.pm.JKQczN" failed: No such file or directory (2)

mkstemp problem introduced from 2.5.5 to 2.5.6
Hello,
Please let me know if this is a bug or a feature.
I used to be able to do the following with 2.5.5.
On a remote host I have /mytree and I mirrored at my
local host as a regular user doing
rsync -avz --delete kent@host:/mytree /.
with 2.5.6 I get
mkstemp .file.aFhK3N failed: Permission denied
probably because rsync2.5.6 is attempting to create a
temporary file on the root directory,
