--link-dest and file/dir transfer to remote rsync daemon
Hi NG,
I want to do incremental backups to a remote server running rsyncd
(because daemonless transfer via ssh often hangs!). In contrast to
transfer via ssh (without remote rsyncd) this doesn't seem possible, or
do I miss something?
Imagine I want to incrementally backup `mydir' to the backup space
`backup' on e remote server `alpha' running an rsync daemon. rsyncd on

Is there a parameter in rsync to clean $BACKUPDIR before writing to it (--backup-dir=$BACKUPDIR)?

Obviously you can ssh an rm -rf. Alternatively, if you are in a
restricted environment where you are only allowed to use rsync you can
rsync --delete an empty directory to it.

Is there a parameter in rsync to clean $BACKUPDIR before writing to it (--backup-dir=$BACKUPDIR)?
Hi,
I am runing rsync --backup --backup-dir=$BACKUPDIR where the
BACKUPDIR=$(date +%d) to recycle the $BACKUPDIR in a month. But rsync does
not clean the $BACKUPDIR before writing to it in cycling.
I guess you have to clean it manually before the rsync can write to it. As
my $BACKUPDIR is in remote machine, do you have to run ssh to delete it
first before calling rsync in a script? Or if there

Hi Kevin,
Thank you very much for the response. Actually, I don't think I need to
clean the backup dir defined in --backup-dir=<backup dir>, when the
contents has already been deleted in the destination (no exist), it will
delete from the backup dir as well in next cycle, correct?

Taking a stab at a pure Ruby Dir.glob
Hi all,
Here''s what I''ve come up with so far for a pure Ruby Dir.glob for MS
Windows. It almost works. The problem right now is the [] notation,
which I''m not translating properly into a regex.
I haven''t started on the ''**'' notation yet either, but I figure that''s
more of a control flow issue. Feel free to disagree with me and/or

rsync script from homepage: trouble
Hello,
I'm new to this and am trying to modify the "backup to a central backup
server with 7 day incremental" script from
http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/examples.html to suit my situation.
I have ended up with the script attached below and when running it from
command line I get these errors:
rsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at main.c(726)
and a plethora of this

fully-qualified symlinks & --exclude question
Greetings!
I've ran into a couple difficulties for a particular rsync use-case
I'm involved in implementing - hoping someone here might be able to
clue me in!
I've got an existing linux box, with a particular directory that needs
to be mirrored onto another server, into a different base path on that
server - i.e.:
server1:/var/lib/bar/ to server2:/backupdir/var/lib/bar/

cwrsync and link-dest option
Hello,
In a small environment I have to backup two servers, an Ubuntu 9.10
and a Windows Server 2008 machine. My Backuphost is a Ubuntu 9.10
machine as well. I installed rsync on both Ubuntu hosts from
repository (3.0.6) and cwrsync from http://www.itefix.no/i2/node/10650
(3.0.7). Then I wrote some Bash-Scripts which executes rsync every
week like that:
BACKUPDIR=/var/backup
rsync -v -a

Maildirmake equiv?
Since I am using dovecot I do not have courier installed, but Courier had a very handy tool for making maildir folders called `maildirmake` which I used in some automated backup scripts. How do I duplicate maildirmake in dovecot?
for example:
#!/bin/bash
# v1.2a Testing for new dovecot install
# Archive mail from folders without [0-9]{4} Maildirs
# after they are 21 days old to a yearly folder

R CMD check: unknown option ?--outdir==RCHECK?
Hi,
I believe this is kind of a long standing bug though. In R-3.0.1, but this
also happened in previous versions, the long version '--outdir' is not
recognised:
For `R CMD check --outdir=mydir pkg_0.1.tar.gz` we get:
Warning: unknown option ‘--outdir=mydir’
But with `R CMD check -o mydir pkg_0.1.tar.gz` we get:
* using log directory ‘/home/renaud/Documents/projects/mydir/pkg.Rcheck’

deleting a directory
Hi, all,
I'm looking a utility for removing a directory from within R. Currently,
I'm using:
foo <- function(...) {
mydir <- tempdir()
dir.create(mydir, showWarnings = FALSE, recursive = TRUE)
on.exit(system(sprintf("rm -rf %s", mydir)))
## do some stuff in "mydir"
invisible()
}
However, this is assumes "rm" is available. I know of

trying to get incremental backups working
So I'm trying to write up a short script to do some backups over rsync.
The goal is to have multiple client machines push the backups to the
backup server nightly. The backup server will have a complete copy of the
selected directories as well as revisions for the last 7 days.
Here is the brief script I have. Btw if you're wondering about all the
variables, I eventually want to set it to
