yum vs up2date
Which is better? Why?
I know yum is the official update mechanism here and in Fedora Core, but
that doesn't make yum better than up2date any more than Windows NT was
better than OS/2.
Let's try to keep the discussion objective:-)
I'm asking, hoping for some insights into why RH might (apparently) be
moving to yum in preference to up2date (yum is now used within Anaconda).

forcing yum to download but not install
Hey folks,
Is there any way to fake a "yum update" just to get yum to force a download
of all the files it needs, without actually installing them.
I finally have a RPM cache/proxy working and I just want to populate it.
The server I want to actually update cannot be updated until tomorrow but
I'd like to do a fake update just to force the RPMs into my cache so they
will all be

I'm not talking about diff'ing the yum and dnf programs. I'm talking about
diffing the RPM packages that "rpm -V" reveals as changed. Such a utility
would download the package if it wasn't in the cache, unpack it with

Yum equivalent of rpm -i --test
How does one do this? Reading through the man pages for yum it doesn't look like its possible? I could use rpm, but I was hoping to pull down deps through yum automagically.
Thanks!

That's quite handy! But not what I'm looking for. I'm trying to figure
out what edits I made to my config files.

Up2Date and yum failing
I have 2 new servers built from 4.3 isos. I want to update them but
cannot do that because of update issues:
Up2date fails because of a several dependency issues.
yum update fails because of a problem with the au mirrors. yum can find
the mirrors but not the headers.
Cheers

ctv, install.views, install.packages (& update.packages)
Dear all,
Wouldn't it be helpful if the
install.views
install.packages
update.packages
had a "downloadonly=TRUE" flag which would allow us to download the
packages and install them later (or put them in a USB stick and take
them for installation on anothe PC).
I am behind a firewall (Bank) and I have serious plroblem updating R or
installing views (Finance, Econometrics etc.

Yum hangs while doing update
About thirty minutes ago I started an update. Everything downloaded
fine. But when it came to "Running Transaction", it hung:
....
Running rpm_check_debug
Running Transaction Test
Finished Transaction Test
Transaction Test Succeeded
Running Transaction
Updating : xulrunner

And there it sits still.
There's plenty of disk space. The load on the CPU is under

Yum Problem
Hi,
I have no problem running yum update inside the root prompt, but when running yum using sudo as logged-in as ordinary user and command the 'sudo yum update', I am having below error:
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/mirrors-rpmforge error was

yum/dnf diff
I'm used to using "git diff" and "svn diff" to view changes in my
development system. Is there a similar thing that works with changes
between a repository package and the installed RPM? Ie. something that
shows the changes in /etc hinted at by "rpm -V". I'm already using
etckeeper+git but that would combine changes from updates with my own
modifications.

Yum errors
Hi,
I have a machine that recently had some file system corruption. fsck was able
repair the file system but I am getting the following error when I try to
do yum update:

RHEL 7.6 released
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html-single/7.6_release_notes/
They silently rebased GNOME to 3.28, which wasn't in the 7.6 beta nor in
the release notes. Can't wait to see it on my desktop. Too bad we still
have to wait for 3.29, which has more fixes for the huge memory leak of
gnome-shell.

What do you use to provision domU's?
The subject says it all. I got CentOS 6.4 installed and then converted it
to boot into the Xen kernel, using the C6.4 system as its dom0. But now I'm
uncertain how to put a C6.4 domU on the result. Which tools are recommended?

yum-proxy?
Hi,
I've been using Debian for a few years, and there was one nifty little
app that made installing and updating so much easier: apt-proxy.
Most of the time, I'm taking care of small LANs with an average of five
client PCs. But this is a very remote place in South France, so most
villages only have 512 kbps DSL. One major update for openoffice.org-*,
and I have to wait the whole day
