rsync 2.6.0: possible sanitization bug?
Hiya.
While merging the 2.6.0 changes into our modified version of rsync, I
noticed the following bit of code in 2.6.0's options.c:
extern int sanitize_paths;
if (sanitize_paths)
sanitize_path(strdup(files_from), NULL);
filesfrom_fd = open(files_from, O_RDONLY|O_BINARY);
Since sanitize_path modifies its first argument in place, the path that

--link-dest and file/dir transfer to remote rsync daemon
Hi NG,
I want to do incremental backups to a remote server running rsyncd
(because daemonless transfer via ssh often hangs!). In contrast to
transfer via ssh (without remote rsyncd) this doesn't seem possible, or
do I miss something?
Imagine I want to incrementally backup `mydir' to the backup space
`backup' on e remote server `alpha' running an rsync daemon. rsyncd on

find canonic host name
I am concerned about the code under the comment
/* Find canonic host name. */
in ssh.c. This replaces the hostname entered by the user with the
cannonical name determined by getaddrinfo, causing the new name to
be used henceforth. This includes connecting to the host, and
finding its public key in a known_hosts file.
getaddrinfo seems (on Debian GNU/Linux 2.2, GNU libc 2.1.3) to look

rsync 2.6.1 released (including security note)
Hopefully the email to the announce list will show up soon. Until then,
you can get a jump on the rest by checking out the rsync home page to
read the announcement:
http://rsync.samba.org/
It includes a security note about a fix that affects read/write daemons
that are not using chroot. If that includes you, you should look into
upgrading (or maybe enabling chroot on an older rsync).

--from-files broken with remote sources
Using rsync 2.6.0 on both ends, I ran
rsync -v --files-from files andrew@pimlott.net: .
and got an error from the remote rsync. The reason is that the remote
rsync is run as
rsync --server --sender -vvR --files-from=- --from0 .
which conflicts with a check in options.c that rsync must have two
non-option arguments when --files-from is used. I tried again with the
latest nightly

RemoteForward and dynamically allocated listen port
Specifying a RemoteForward of 0:example.com:1234 dynamically allocates
the listen port on the server, and then reports it to ... the client!
Where it is practically useless. Was this someone's idea of a joke?
Presumably not--there are some technical obstacles to reporting it to
the remote process. I'd like to help solve that problem.
The natural way to me would be to extend the syntax

message status changed from new to old on read
Hi. I'm new to IMAP, but just tried uw-imapd and then dovecot in
conjuction with offlineimap. I'm using Debian package version 0.99.14-1
and have my mail in mbox format.
One of the first things that annoys me about both programs is that as
soon as you read a mailbox over imap, the imapd changes all "new"
messages to "old". It seems to have the assumption that the

ssh-add bug
There is an amusing bug in ssh-add that causes it to go into an
infinite loop. I am using openssh 1.2.3, and noticed that when I
ran "ssh-add < /dev/null" in my X startup scripts, but didn't have
ssh-askpass installed, ssh-add started spewing errors into my
.xsession-errors and didn't stop.
I found that what happens is: ssh-add forks and attempts to exec
ssh-askpass. The

security hole in non-chroot rsync daemon
SUMMARY
There is a path-sanitizing bug that affects daemon mode in all recent
rsync versions (including 2.6.2) but only if chroot is disabled. It
does NOT affect the normal send/receive filenames that specify what
files should be transferred (this is because these names happen to get
sanitized twice, and thus the second call removes any lingering leading
slash(es) that the first call left

rsyncd bug for sym-links
I'm 99% sure there is a bug in rsync when running in daemon mode on a
'remote' server. The bug is that when trying to rsync a sym-link, the
daemon 'leg' of the code strips off the leading path separator (for linux,
this would be a '/'). I have produced a 'fixed' version of the code and
we have been using it for at least 6 months. We've also used the

Mystified - comparing chron times
I have two local variables: startTime and expectedStartTime. Both are chron
related objects.
When I look at the class for the objects I can see they are of class
"times".
When I print them to the console, they both read: "09:30:00"
When I print them as.numeric(), they both read: 0.3958333
When I try and compare them: (as.numeric(startTime) ==
as.numeric(expectedStartTime)) it

question about ssh / security
I've been using ssh for a while now (both fsecure and openssh), but am
not an expert on security. I was wondering whether the following is
secure:
I create a key pair, trusted & trusted.pub
I run sshd on a server (no telnet, rsh or other services). I create a
user "guest", and put "trusted.pub" in my authorized file. I give away
"trusted" (the private key)

Non-zero exit status for survival package
I'm running R 2.11 on Karmic. I'm having difficulty installing quite a
few packages with the returned error message of "installation of package
"[whatever the packages happens to be]" had non-zero exit status. I know
this message sometimes is caused by incorrect or missing java packages
and the like. I generally don't have issues with the installation of R
or R packages
