clustered file system of choice
Hi all, I am just trying to consider my options for storing a large mass of data (tens of terrabytes of files) and one idea is to build a clustered FS of some kind. Has anybody had any experience with that? Any recommendations? Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Boris.

estimating backuppc
talking with a client about various options for backup. They are an advertising agency so most of the space is used by various binary files JPG/TIFF/Movies. We have been using LTO-2 but if we jump up their storage to say 2Tb, that's going to be $5000 for LTO-3 with magazines. This affords us 3 week rotations rather simply. If we add hard drive storage for backups instead of buying LTO-3 tape

mdbox import error from read-only filesystem
Dovecot version: 2.2.34 doveadm import tries to call open() on the source indexes/logs of mdbox data, but even if it should work as it is just a read-related call, it fails on read-only filesystems. The main use case for read-only filesystem is restoring from backup: the massive deduplicated backup data is exposed using FUSE. For deduplication to work efficiently, we have to backup the whole

Simple lme/lmer random effects questions
Hello, I have two very rudimentary questions regarding the random effects terms in the lme and lmer functions. I apologize if this also partly strays into a general statistics question, but I'm a bit new to this all. So hopefully it'll be a quick problem to sort out... Here is my experimental setup: I raised butterflies in 5 different testing chambers all set to different

[Q] Example Data Files for Package
If the example data files for a package are extremely large, should they just be put in a different package specifically for example data? If so, are these data packages normally submitted to CRAN/BioC or mentioned in README with directions specifying where to download on developer site? If these files are all dot-tsv (.tsv), they would seem appropriate for the data directory. "Writing R

CD Baby using FLAC to archive 40,000 CDs
Hey FLAC gang - Just thought you'd like to know CD Baby has switched to FLAC for archiving the 40,000 CDs we have in stock. Luckily HD space is down below $1/gig so we got a 6-terabyte RAID-5 box set up for about $7000. Got the FreeBSD boxes churning away night and day, ripping and archiving. I'll do a more formal press release for ya in a couple months as we're further along, but

Samba -- Just Do It!
As I get older, hopefully wiser, I try and look at ways I can make a contribution to various causes that I believe in. Examples would incluce my alma maters, various legal or political groups (that share or advocate my views), or other groups of "right thinking" people, to name a few. Of one in particular, open soucre comes to mind. And, within the relm of open source, Samba in

GFID attir is missing after adding large amounts of data
Hi Cluster Community, we are seeing some problems when adding multiple terrabytes of data to a 2 node replicated GlusterFS installation. The version is 3.8.11 on CentOS 7. The machines are connected via 10Gbit LAN and are running 24/7. The OS is virtualized on VMWare. After a restart of node-1 we see that the log files are growing to multiple Gigabytes a day. Also there seem to be problems

Transcoding between Vorbis and Vorbis
I know transcoding is a bad thing. However, i am in the need of being able to lower the quality of an ogg file without the original CD. Whats the best way to do it (least generational loss possible) - "ogg > ogg" or "ogg > wav > ogg" or is there an easier way (as in has someone got a decent working peeler up there sleeve and isn't telling anyone about it)

Does Berkeley DB and Rails seem like a good match?
I''ve been reading up on Berkeley DB and I''ve been refelcting on the Rails philosophy and it just seemed to me like the two should go together hand in glove. Rails seeks to abstract the programer from squirrely database coding which is great. My only problem is that you''re still left with a large component, namely the databsase server (MySQL, PostgreSQL..etc) which

Re: Joining a domain spanned across different subnets
Mark/All, I'm having the same problem...Any resolution yet? However I am using a NAT system between my two subnets and my logs show I definately get elected as the master on subnet (x) where the samba server is, but I need it to propogate to subnet (y) where the client is trying to sign in from. Any ideas out there? Please help if you can, thanks. -Jeff Mark Andrews wrote: > >
