Suspected memory leak with R v.2.5.x and large matrices with dimnames set
Hi -
Admittedly, this may not be the most sophisticated memory profiling
performed, but when using unix's top command, I'm noticing a notable
memory leak when using R with a large matrix that has dimnames set.
To allow people to reproduce the problem I'm seeing, I've added a
small (< 50 lines) code snippet at the end of this email.

Hello,
Sorry I know this might be the wrong group to ask this in but I have
been having a lot of trouble switching off the nvidia chip in my
Macbook Pro 9,1. I have tried numerous things but there is a lot of
flawed documentation out there on this. I have a pile of info (dmesg,
kernel configs and etc) that I would like to submit as a bug reports
but no clear place to send it.

Winbind memory leak
Hi,
I have been quite surprised at the largeness of the winbind memory leak. I
have an awk script which checks this every n-minutes and sends me an alert
when it exceeds a specified threshold. See below for some sample data.
This is RH6.2 with Samba 2.2.2 and about 25 users.
What I was wondering is whether there is any issues with killing and
restarting winbind whilst samba is running at full

nmbd memory leak in 2.2.x CVS
I am running 2.2.6 on a customer's site and everything has been perfect.
However I noticed the other day that one of the two nmbd processes (it is a
wins server) had grown to 13Mb over a two week period.
I needed to update to the latest CVS version anyway and had hoped that
something in that might fix things. Five days later and things are looking
the same:
nmbd started on Nov 9th:

Memory leak in winbindd
I'm running Samba 2.2.3a on NetBSD. I've been having an annoying
problem with winbindd dying inexplicably. I finally found a test that
seems to (eventually) kill it:
while wbinfo -t > /dev/null; do /usr/bin/true; done
The problem is a memory leak in winbindd. Actually, wbinfo -t will
still work, but wbinfo -u doesn't (response.extra_data is always null).
Is this a known

HFC ISDN card with bristuff from jung hanns.n et?
Hi Alessio
Yes, the problems you report do seem similar to the issues I had. I found on the Dells that the audio prompts were very choppy and played slower than normal. Occasionally there would be 'bursts' oav a second or so of 'good' audio.
I also suspected IRQ issues but the Dell Mobos had no way of adjusting them. Best thing is to try and get the card on its own unshared

building initrd.img with updated drivers
Can someone point me to instructions on how to build a
pxeboot/initrd.img with updated drivers. I would like to pxe boot and
install rh8 on a newer machine, and the pxeboot files that come with rh8
(2.4.20-8) don't support my e1000 NIC. I believe that the newer
2.4.20-28.8 drivers will, but I'm having trouble finding instructions in
rebuilding the pxeboot initrd.img + vmlinuz to

Thanks Samba Community!!!
You folks are the greatest.
Rolled out my first Samba "member server" today.
Read the stuff from SWAT, and it worked the first time on RH7.3, after it
failed on RH8
You folks are the best, we're struggling to stay afloat and M$ squeezes us
for more.
(RH is pushing me to Debian by the day!!!)
There will be a lot more Samba in the farm soon.
My deepest grattitude.

moving from RH8 to CentOS5.1
Hi all,
Is there a way to 'automatically' recreate users/permissions when moving
from RH8 (yes, I know...way old) to CentOS5.1 or is it just simpler to
recreate the users manually?
Total users on this system is < 20.
Thanks in advance,
-Ray

[Not R question]: Better fit for order probit model
Hi,
I have a model which tries to fit a set of data with 10-level ordered responses. Somehow, in my data, the majority of the observations are from level 6-10 and leave only about 1-5% of total observations contributed to level 1-10. As a result, my model tends to perform badly on points that have lower level than 6.
I would like to ask if there's any way to circumvent this problem or not.

where are all the Redhat 8 -devel packages?
I'm probably missing something really simple.
I've installed an RH8 IAM in AWS and I'm trying to build packages on it.
I've noticed there are many *-devel packages that I cannot install:

plotting the lognormal density curve
I am trying to plot a lognormal density curve on top of an existing
histogram. Can anybody suggest a simple way to do this? Even if someone
could just explain how to plot a regular normal density curve on top of an
existing histogram, it would be a big help.
Also, is there some way to search through the R-help archives other than
simple browsing?
Thank you so much. Your help and time is greatly

Keyboard repeat error - VNC Xen virtual framebuffer
Hello Xen-Users,
I am currently provisioning old Linux guests as HVM on a server, and giving
clients access through VNC. The current setup uses the default Xen
framebuffer as a VNC server (all configuration files have vnc=1 and a few
other settings), and my clients are using vinagre (a.k.a. Remote Desktop
Viewer) on Arch as their VNC client.
Problem: Keyboard input is not consistently handled

Can''t boot HVM Linux guests on Debian Squeeze Dom0
I just downloaded Debian Squeeze and installed Xen from packages, following
the instructions here: http://wiki.debian.org/Xen
I am able to get PV guests up and running easily, but HVM guests will not
even boot.
The HVM I am currently trying to run is Debian sarge, which I installed into
a disk image and configured using qemu.
I am running on an HP Proliant ML150G6, which has Intel-VT hardware

Can't see all of the directories in a share with 2.2.7a-1 & RH8...but older version/kernel can
Hi all,
Hoping someone might be able to steer me in the right direction and/or
help me solve my problem.
We have a number of Linux servers (RH6.2 -> RH8) which connect to the
same share on a Win2000 Server. We've been working kinda hard to get
everything upgraded to either RH7.3 or RH8.0 since we rarely get the
opportunity. 2 similar servers (one dev, one prod) access this same

RH8 guest: bad fs?
I recently reinstalled RH8 as a VMware guest on a WinXP box.
I used a previously proven script at level 3, containing, in
one line with no inappropriate spaces:
mount -t smbfs -o user,noauto,dmask=777,fmask=777,username=xx,
password=yy //DELLBOX/linuxShare /mnt/linuxShare
I get a failure that reports numerous possibilities including
bad fs, and other other things. I suspect I omitted a
