scan for first existing hard-link file
Here's a patch that makes rsync try to find an existing file in a group of hard-linked files so that it doesn't create the first one in the group from scratch if a later file could be used instead. Details: I decided to avoid having the code do an extra scan down the list when we encounter the lead file in the list. This is because it would be bad to have to do the same scan in the

Resolving problems in the generator->receiver pipes
When I was working on the the hard-link change, I noticed that many of the hard-link verbose messages were getting lost. These messages get output very near the end of the transfer, and it turns out that the reason for the loss was that there are two pipes flowing from the generator and the receiver, and it was possible for the "we're all done" message to get received down the redo

Question about file ownership on destination
Hello Regarding ownership on the destination: rsync's man page indicates that when synchronizing files to a remote host, -o implies the --numeric-ids option, which makes perfect sense aince the named users/groups may not exist on the destination host. The problem I have is that the files created on the destination still appear to be owned by the local user (server1) on the rsync

Fixing some exclude/include bugs
As threatened a while back, there are some exclude/include bugs that I'd like to see fixed in rsync. Here is the patch: http://www.blorf.net/rsync-exclude.patch This fixes the following bugs: - A non-anchored, slash-including pattern with a wildcard needs to be matched at the end of the path (e.g. "CVS/R* should match throughout the tree, not just at /CVS/R*). - A leading

Rsync died on big directories/file-lists
Hi, My name is Vu Huynh. I'm currently work for Atmel Corporation. We're using Rsync v2.5.7 to rsync design kits between our remote sites. It works fine for all small kit directories. However, there is 1 BIG kit directory (But there is no file has the size of bigger than 100MB) that always gets "rsync: connection unexpectedly closed" Error. The Full Error Message

The dangers of static buffers in rsync code
I have been trying for quite a while now to understand why is the flist.c:f_name() function implemented using static buffers. Anyone care to comment? The immediate problem is that any call to f_name overrides the previous content (well, obvious). This, combined with the fact that several function calls are made with the result of f_name(file) results in problems handling hardlinks - and

osx 10.6 strange rsync errors
I've recently encountered this issue which was discussed here about a year ago. I'm not sure if anyone has a fix for this, but I thought I would post my workaround here. Since the topic is old, I'm summarising the problem .. basically it involves rsync creating large numbers of files with a leading ".." when syncing to an apple network share via afp. The essence of the

File rename detection?
Hello! As I was found rsync do not detect file renaming. If I just copy my backup.0.tgz (many Mbytes in size having it's md5) to backup.1.tgz (which will be equial in size and md5) it will be the same file in fact... Rsync will delete old file (backup.0.tgz) on the receiving side and download new one (backup.1.tgz). I do not think there are any difficulties to detect this situation and

Modified --files-from patch
I've been working on an update to my --files-from patch that I think will soon be ready to be committed to CVS. See if you agree. For those that have been following the saga, here's a list of just the changes since the last patch (for those that haven't, see the next section): Changes Since the Last Release: =============================== - The --null option was renamed to

Tired of "filename too long"? Me too...
I assume there's some good reason for the way filenames are faithfully maintained as temp files, but it's a little frustrating when you get "filename too long" messages as a result... with no indication of what file it was it's complaining about. The obvious fix is to simply generate a tmpname and have done with it. Possibly safer, truncate the filename, in case there's

Recursive ssh
Hi all, I want to copy files from a remote server to a local directory with ssh. I've some difficulties with that because on the Remoteserver I have a directory "/www/ftp" with a lot of subdirectories with each of them 4 other subdirectories. I want to sync only */data/* to the local machine without */images/* or */doc/* or */movies/* Any solution would be appreciated. regardsMac

rsync.h always including syslog.h even when not used.
Hello, rsync.h is always including the syslog.h file, even though it is only used when the LOG_DAEMON macro is defined. Could someone change it to be as follows: #ifdef LOG_DAEMON #include <syslog.h> #endif OpenVMS currently does not have a syslog facility, so it does not have a syslog.h. Hardware - no way -Re: Crashes maybe due to: "error writing 4 unbuffered bytes"
Dear JW, I spent hours checking and upgrading my hardware. There is nothing wrong with it. It is a 'mature' Pentium-II 400MHz system that has been running my servers WITHOUT ANY CRASHES for nearly 2 years now 24/7 Listen to me: "The crashes are dues to rsync" There is an IDENTICAL report from a totally different source at

logging on client side on NT
Hi, I would like to log whatever happens with rsync on client side when it runs with Cygwin on NT4. First, I just did a redirect of the screen output to a log-file: rsync -rtv --delete --modify-window=2 --stats /cygdrive/g/users/bco/test/ bee2bs01::d/test/ >>c:\rsync\log\%FDATE%.log The problem with this method is that it does not redirect whatever Rsync reports as errors; because they

updating server with rsync????
Hi, I have 2 ftp servers with 3 identical users. I want server B to be updated of server A. Whatever changes mmade by users on server A should be made on server B say every 5 hours. Is rsync the right tool to use here? Can rsync be used such that only changed files are downloaded? Thanks a lot and bye. PATCH/RFC: Another stab at the Cygwin hang problem
Hi, In http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin/2002-09/msg01155.html, I noted that the often-observed hangs of rsync under Cygwin were assuaged by a call to msleep(). After upgrading my Cygwin environment to rsync 2.5.6, I'm seeing these hangs again, not surprisingly given a CVS entry for main.c notes that this kludge was not harmless: Revision 1.162 / (download) - annotate - [select for

memory reduction
As those of you who watch CVS will be aware Wayne has been making progress in reducing memory requirements of rsync. Much of what he has done has been the product of discussions between he and myself that started a month ago with John Van Essen. Most recently Wayne has changed how the file_struct and its associated data are allocated, eliminating the string areas. Most of these changes have been
