How to setup Rsync as an NT Service
For a recent project I needed to run Rsync as a service on Windows NT. The
following is a link to the instructions I created to recreate my steps.
http://members.home.net/cbollerud2/projects/rsync/NTService.html
The "no-fork" patch used here is very similar to the "no-detach" option
mentioned in many previous posts. I wish I could take credit for it, but I

First, make sure there is NO trace of Wine installed. Packages have changed.
Second, the repository also works with Synaptic. I did have to fiddle a bit.
And, no, I don't know why. But it does work as listed. Oh, and disable any
listing for "Sarge". I don't know why that is even there.

How to revert to wine 1.5.4 on Ubuntu 12.04 using Synaptic?
I am using:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu
as an additional repository in Synaptic so I can use the latest (released) version of wine, 1.5.
Today, with the wine 1.5.5 update, I can no longer run World of Warcraft, so I'd like to revert to the 1.5.4 version until the latest released version works. Unfortunately, I can't force Synaptic to use 1.5.4 (perhaps because the

cran ubuntu repository and ubuntu 12.10
Since upgrading to quantal, I find that synaptic and apt-get cannot read
the sources.list file if it includes the previously standard line
deb http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/R/CRAN/bin/linux/ubuntu/ quantal
This line makes apt-get or synaptic give an error message identifying
this line as having a syntax error.
If "multiverse" is added at the end of the line, the line is parsed, but

Updating to a Development Version breaks 'wine-dev'
Hi, I am relatively new to Linux but know what I'm doing.
I have installed Ubuntu and WinE (through synaptic package manager so it took the latest stable version, 1.0.1)
Warcraft III worked perfectly in this version. But GGClient (also known as Garena, a program used to play low-latency games with others on the internet through a VPN) does not work in this version of WinE. So I looked it up,

Using Synaptic with Cent OS 4.4
Can Synaptic be used successfully on CentOS 4.4 instead of YumEx ? Are
there any issues using Synaptic with the CentOS 4.4 repositories ?

I downloaded and installed apt and synaptic using yum ok,
but are there corresponding apt repo's for the yum ones? If
so, what are they?

I changed the name of this thread so I can explain where apt is and when
it can be used in CentOS.
Apt is currently only supported in CentOS-4 and only on the i386 arch.
apt, apt-devel and synaptic are "extras" packages for CentOS-4.0 i386.
That means they are included

Deleting packages
When choosing to delete packages, Synaptic will tell the user what other
packages are dependant and therefore have to be added to the delete list
also, and then will automatically add those dependant packages to the
delete list if one chooses to go ahead with the original package
deletion. I did not notice such functionality in YumEx. Does it exist ?
If it does not exist, is it possible to

Installing and maintaining R on Ubuntu 9.04 -, best practice
I had an exchange of ideas on this with Dirk E. a couple of months ago.
He can correct this if I state it wrongly, but
1) we agreed that using apt/Synaptic structure was best, but sometimes
the packages are not available
2) also that using install.packages when there is a .deb can lead to
some "confusion" (the package database on the
local system does not know about an R package

Update R 2.1.1-1 -> 2.2.1 on UBUNTU
I've installed Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy on my Mac. When using MacOSX, I used to
work with R 2.2.1, but now, with Ubuntu, I can't download it with
synaptic. I can only download R 2.1.1-1, and I really need 2.2.1.
I've tried to edit the sources.list file, typing
deb http://cran.R-projet.org/bin/linux/debian stable/
R/r, using a different mirror,... but when I run synaptic, it says:

Still hitting odd problems trying to install R 3.5.2 on Debian amd64 machine
My Emails a week or so back were about installing Rstudio and the R shiny server on Debian. I was using an old Toshiba laptop as a sandbox for that and it would only install i386 (same for Ubuntu). Using the information at https://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/debian/ I did get to the point where I had R 3.5.2, Rstudio and the server on there (with some help from Dirk that is in the list archives).

I simply cannot install R on Ubuntu. I don't know why.
I don't mind using sudo apt-get update/upgrade/install buit I get into
crazy loops (hours) that clearly can't be trusted. But when I use
Synaptic (reload/mark for install R-base) every time I get some list
of things things it want to install as well and syas "Mark" which it
does not do and when I go forward with the Synaptic install of R-base
I get this (and abort) every time:

Ubuntu repo versus WINE
On installing Xubuntu 11.04 yesterday I installed WINE via synaptic, selecting the package 'wine' manually which seems to have then installed 'wine1.2' and then some other packages.
I was going to add the WINE repo to upgrade to 1.3 when I saw the package already exists in synaptic.
My question is why doesn't Ubuntu use 1.3 which

rgeos on Linux requires GEOS 3.2.3, not 3.3.1
Some notes on installing rgeos in R 2.14.0 on a Linux Mint 11 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) machine
1. rgeos 0.1-15 will not run with GEOS 3.2.0-1, which is the version currently available on Synaptic package manager
2. I installed GEOS 3.3.1 (the latest version) from http://trac.osgeo.org/geos/, but rgeos will not run with this either
3. I then install GEOS 3.2.3, and now rgeos works fine!
It seems

Question regarding dependencies for Wine 1.1.1
Hi,
I am new to Wine and somewhat to Linux.
I am running DreamLinux (DL) which to the best of my knowledge is based on Debian.
Currently I have Wine 1.0.0 installed with no Windows application installed on it yet. I would like to install M$ Office 2007 and reading the news on the WineHQ homepage it said that Wine 1.1.1 was released with fixes to M$ Office 2007, so I figured I should upgrade

Lucid LTS: different Wine versions for 32 or 64 bits ?
Hello,
I 've been using Wine 1.2 wjth Ubuntu 10.04-LTS an a 64bit Asus laptop for almost one year.
In the beginning, everything worked OK (graphic refresh, focus, etc...). Now Wine works bad, I suppose some updates in Lucid do not suit Wine 1.2 (?). I tried XP mode, W98 mode (my applications are oldies ;-), but the behaviour seems bad in any case.
On this laptop, synaptic shows Wine 1.2

Upgrading R packages on Etch
Greetings,
I've been trying to upgrade R packages on my Debian Etch

with as they occur).
When I did, just now:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
I got:

Building dependency tree... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
