apache log backups
I'm watching my backup via rsync, throttled to a very low speed. Looks
like downloading apache logs is taking the longest time (when I'm rsyncing
over an old copy of the same data) because it's not noticing that, for
example, www.chaosreigns.com-access.log.196.gz on the origin is the same
file as www.chaosreigns.com-access.log.186.gz on the destination, so
*everything* is getting

scp host1 to host2
Hello all,
scp doesn't seem to do remote copy between 2 hosts ie. scp
host1:<file> host2:<file> doesn't ask for the passphrase when trying to
authenticate to host2. Now if I change my rsa key to have no passphrase
for host2 , I am able to do the remote scp.
Is this a known issue ?
So scp doesnot work if you cannot authenticate without user interaction
to host2?
I am using

scp host1:file1 host2:file2 -> Permission denied??????
Hello,
I have a stupid problem with scp and I can't find where it comes from. I
am running 3 machines here with RedHat 7.3, RedHat 8 and RedHat 9. The 3
of them have openssh-3.7.1p2 (built from the SRPMS found on the openssh
web site).
I have though a problem to run a command of the type 'scp host1:file1
host2:file2' (my ssh being correctly setup):

scp user@host1 user@host2 broken?
Hello all,
Is it just me or is 'scp user at host1 user at host2' broken (if the server asks
you for the password)?
1) [password required]
>From OpenSSH 2.5.1p1 -> OpenSSH 2.5.1p1 -> OpenSSH 2.3.0, I get like:
> scp pekkas at xxx:~/*.patch psavola at yyy:~/temp/

Writing to the wrong directory
I expect this is user error, but I thought I'd post in case anyone else is
feeling a similar sense of losing their mind.
I have a root cron job:
0 3 * * * rsync -Hva --stats --del ... / /media/2tb/bak/dancer-`date +\%F`/
"..." represents 4 --link-dest's and 22 --exclude's (including /media/).
So last night, / should have been copied to

failure to attempt protocol v1 connection with v1 key
If I do
ssh -i /home/darxus/.ssh/somekey user at host
Where somekey is an rsa1 key, and host is only running ssh protocol 1, it
fails to connect with "Permission denied (publickey).".
1) I think the specified v1 key should encourage ssh to try v1.
2) I think, if v2 fails, it should try v1.
This works when I add the "-1" argument.

Well done!
Great job!
I'm considering converting all my mp3 files to Vorbis format. Only
examples/encoder_example is a bit too simplistic (of course, being an
example), and the cmdline tools aren't ready.
I encode my mp3 files at 96 kbit/s, because that's enough for me.
Will Vorbis do well at this rate? Any quick hacks I can make to
examples/encoder_example.c?
Perhaps Vorbis is of interest

4 important bugs again <;
hello everyone,
thanks to todd 1.2.21 is out :)
every release getting better, i would like to get
consensus on these "important" bugs:
#252078 logtail: should depend on perl >= 5.8
sarge as any other modern linux distro use perl 5.8.x,
it's even inside of its base.
backports are under the peril of its author
if no one voices up, i'll close that bug in the next days.

why check f_path.mnt is equal for source and dest in btrfs_ioctl_clone()?
This gives EXDEV for clone operations that btrfs could otherwise execute
and with slight change of circumstances will actually execute fine.
Imagine we have a btrfs on /dev/mapper/foobar with subvols /foo and
/bar. Let’s also imagine top of said fs in mounted at /mnt. In this
case, a cross-subvol clone of /mnt/foo/srcfile to /mnt/bar/dstfile will
succeed.
However, if only the individual

Difference in behaviour with --backup
When I do
rsync -av --backup --backup-dir=/dir1/dir2/Backup \
/dir1/dir2/dir3 machine:/dir1/dir2/dir3
I get /dir1/dir2/Backup/dir3/...
/Backup/dir3/dir4/...
i.e. the tree under 'dir3' (my source tree) gets created
under .../Backup. This is fine.
But when I do the same thing with a single file like
rsync -av --backup --backup-dir=/dir1/dir2/Backup \
/dir1/dir2/file

file corruption
I am using rsync in my project for copying database binary files over the
network from active module to standby module.
Once in a while files found to be corrupt on standby module when copying is
done first time. When I checked the active module
at that time files found to be proper.
rsync is completing successful without giving any errors.
On comparing both files I see a big hole in standby file
