Idle connections timing out
Hello, I''m a Shorewall novice. I have a problem and I''m not quite sure how to troubleshoot it. I''m using a Mandrake 9.0 (Security Level "4") system, which came with Shorewall. (I live in Lynnwood, not far from Shoreline, btw.) Long lived but idle connections are dying. Examples are SSH terminals where I don''t type anything, and IMAP connections

Bug report: deletion of files only on remote system is not logged.
I was told that my earlier submission of this report contained a user-hostile attachment (courtesy of Outlook), so here it is again, with the log included below. The problem: Files that exist only on the remote system are deleted silently (i.e. not logged), rather than noisily as implied by the recommendation of --dry-run in the rsync man page definition of --delete to see what would be

Password Change from Windows machines ("You do not have permission to change your password")
Hello, I just wasted several hours trying to figure out why I could not change Samba passwords from Windows XP computers. I'm posting here so that there is some form of documentation about this on the web. My setup is basically this: - Samba 3.3.2 (running under Ubuntu 9.04) - OpenLDAP user database - Full O.S. support for OpenLDAP auth, using nsswitch and PAM. (My client

timeout error in rsync-2.5.5
Dear all, I've been trying to track down a problem with timeouts when pulling data from an rsync daemon and I have now run out of any useful ideas. The problem manifests itself when I try to transfer a large directory tree on a slow client machine. What happens then is that the client rsync process successfully receives the list of files from the server, then begins checking the local

rsync option for continuing event i/o errors occured on remove server
Hello, I search a way to continue processing backup event i/o errors occured on the remote server. I use rsync to make backup of files on a files-server. Recently I had a corrupted file on the files-server and rysnc crash, and don't continue to backup the rest of files. I have found the --ignore-errors rsync option but it seems only about deleting action. On backup server I use this

Problem with checksum failing on large files
I'm having a problem with large files being rsync'd twice because of the checksum failing. The rsync appears to complete on the first pass, but then is done a second time (with second try successful). When some debug code was added to receiver.c, I saw that the checksum for the remote file & the temp file do not match on the first try, so (as expected) it repeats the rsync & the

Orphaned rsync process on remote machine?
All, Sometimes when I do an rsync, it times out and leaves on orphaned process on the remote machine. I am running rsync over ssh using public key authentication. I synchronize about twenty-five machines, and this problem only appears on one of them. It worked until recently on this machine. I don't know what changed or what is different. I run rsync with a command line like this

Odd behavior with rsync/ssh/--delete
I've just about googled my brains out over this one, and banged heads with several other SA buddies. I have a nightly rsync of a DMZ system (Solaris 8 SPARC[1]) to an internal system (RedHat ES 3.0 [2]). The internal system runs a cron job and pulls changes off of the DMZ system via ssh. (To be honest, I've also seen this going between two Solaris systems.) However, my syncs are

How to backing up ACL's on remote server ?
Hi List, I'm currently backing up a number of samba servers onto a remote server using a perl script called rsnapshot which utilises rsync. Over the last few i've started using posix ACL's on my samba server and now I would like to be able to back up these ACLS's. All of my servers are have their filesystems (ext3) mounted with ACL support and i am using the following version

Rsync synchronizes unchanged files
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I wish to use rsync to synchronize a whole fat32 (MSWindows) partition mounted into a linux system. I run rsync from linux. The problem is rsync synchronizes most of the data even if the data hasn't changed since the original image was made. I used the -avz parameters to do the backup and the same for restoration. Also I've tried just -rvz. It
