rsh issue/update (access denied)...
hi...
i've got an "access denied" issue with rsh on one of my boxes (and before we
start, no "use ssh" comments.. rsh is what i'm dealing with for now!!)
i've got a few boxes in my network, and i can successfully rsh into them
with no issue. however, on one box, i can't access it using rsh, and i'm
running out of things to try... kind of curious.
i can

Using openssh 3.1p1 on Solaris with tcp wrappers 7.6
Dear Open SSH and TCP Wrappers Colleagues,
We are trying to use open ssh 3.1p1 on SPARC platforms
under Solaris 2.8 using gcc 2.95.2, in conjunction with
tcp wrappers 7.6 (IPv6 version). The wrapping of open ssh
is not too well documented but I think we have figured
most of this out (hearty thanks to Wietse Venema, Jim
Mintha & Niels Provos for their helpful email exchanges) --

rsync test harness
You can now do "make check" in the CVS version of rsync and it will
run some elementary self tests. It also runs these tests on
build.samba.org, which should help catch unintended regressions,
particularly on unusual platforms.
Contributions of more test cases would be welcome.

questions about "connection refused"
Dear all:
I installed the rsync 2.5.4 in my two machine (192.168.1.30 and
192.168.1.120, both are AIX OS) to backup data each other. The
software`s installation is ok, and I can copy local files. But when I
try to backup data between two machines, there reports some errors:
>./bin/rsync -avz 192.168.1.30::web ./backup-3000/
rsync: failed to connect to 192.168.1.30: Connection refused

ISCI Network Hang - Lun becomes unavailable
I am sharing out ZFS ISCSI luns to my Mac. When copying large files, the network will hang in the middle of the transfer and the LUN will become unavailable until I plumb the NIC. This issue appears to only occur only when I am reading files (ie..syncing an ipod) and not writing (I''m not 100% sure though). When I snoop the interface I notice a bunch of ARP lookups. Any ideas? "missing secret for user" using cygwin rsync on Windows XP Home
Hi,
I'm trying to set up rsync to allow me to backup a number of Windows machine to a Windows XP Home server using Nasbackup.
I can get rsync working fine but have been struggling for days to get user authentication working.

Proxy-ARP
I''m working with LEAF boxes as gateway machines. I''m trying to implement
Proxy-ARP to build a bandwidth manager for my network. I''ve gone as per
the lartc howto to implement a transparent bridge in an existing network
and plan to put in my tc script after this. I''m configuring the box as a
standalone one before plugging it into the network. I''m getting

Chrooting dovecot.
Greetings, I have installed Dovecot under FreeBSD 5_3 It is pretty
impressive. I got SSL working with no problem for both imap and pop3.
Besides that I do still want to chroot Dovecot. I noticed that there
are some options
in the dovecot.conf that are intended for this. Unfortunately online
resources on how to do
that can't be found on google. Although I'm running the server as user

GridEngine-OpenSSH integration
Hi,
GridEngine (http://gridengine.sunsource.net, aka. SGE) is an opensource
batch system for clusters. They have an integration with SSH:
http://gridengine.sunsource.net/project/gridengine/howto/qrsh_ssh.html
The idea is that instead of using a modified rsh/rshd, they wanted to
OpenSSH. However, in order to provide full job control, they need to add a
few hooks in OpenSSH. Question:
- Is it OK

openssh-SNAP-20001207 scp "Bad file descriptor" sort-of work-around
Everything seems to work, though I still have trouble with scp. The
behaviour is not protocol dependent - acts the same with either. (Using
RedHat 6.2)
When I scp <file> <host>:<dir>, bash is invoked as a login shell on the
server side host - this doesn't seem right. With my /etc/profile, I get

error starting client-server protocol (code 5)
I'm running FreeBSD 4.6.2 on two different machines. Both machines have
rync installed by way of the ports library, but one of them is running
it as a server. I followed the directions in the man pages for running
the server using inetd.
Here is what happens:
rsync rsync://myusername@10.0.0.8/
rsync: server sent "rysnc version 2.5.5 protocol version 26" rather than

sshd and .bashrc
The short version: There's a "#define USE_PIPES"
in the middle of session.c; it would be better if
it were in (e.g.) defines.h or some other .h file.
(If in fact it needs to be defined at all; I'm not
convinced that it does.) Here's the (much) longer
version:
I recently installed the latest OpenSSH on some of
our servers (RHEL5, which provides the 4.3 release)

Re: Security Concern..
[Mod: This message is a reason *why* linux-security is moderated list. This
is also a reason why Rogier, myself, Alan Cox and others really do not want
to have completely open lists that deal with security related aspects of
running a system as way too many people just jump to conclusions and give
suggestions without doing any reasearch on a subject. -- alex (co-moderator

AIX SSH 2.x ssh and /etc/ftpusers rcp rlogin WRONG !
IF ssh is a replacement for rlogin, rsh etc I can accept it respecting
rlogin=false as rlogin does and rsh does not, however scp is a replacement
for rcp, and rcp does NOT use rlogin attribute, so the implementation is
NOT standard as scp fails if rlogin=false, but rcp succeeds, as documented.

Rsyncing without RSH or SSH ?
People,
This doesn't seem possible - would it be possible to hack a version of
rsync to do it?
As an exercise, I want to create a VM image (or at least backup of all
the files with rsync) from a SCSI drive in an old Red Hat (NOT
Enterprise) v5.2 Linux 486 machine (circa 1999 that does have rsync on
it but it has protocol problems talking my server). The 486 has:

rsh with passwords
I am doing rsync over a private network. Encryption is not required.
Currently rsync over ssh works, but requires too many CPU cycles
(especially when doing a lot of transfers) on a CPU-bound system. I need
to use rsh instead.
The problem is, I can either set rsh to allow transfers without a
password, or it won't let me transfer files at all.
I need rsh to ask for a password. The network

add scp path to _PATH_STDPATH
what do you think about this patch to add the path to scp to
_PATH_STDPATH? is there a better or cleaner way to do this? i'm hoping
to ward off 'scp doesn't work' questions for the next release.
i did *not* add this to a --with-default-path path, because if a user
specifies that, they should control its value completely.

new Irix feature
The Irix 6.5 operating system now supports job containers. Job containers
are in some ways similar to process groups or sessions. Every process that
stems from a user's initial entry to the system is assigned to the same job
container.
The Irix job initiation commands - login, telnet, rsh, rlogin, cron, su, etc
all support job containers and I'd like to modify openssh so that it
