preserving sparse matrices (Matrix)
Hi, I have sparse (tridiagonal) matrices, and I use the Matrix package for handling them. For certain computations, I need to either set the first row to zero, or double the last row. I find that neither operation preserves sparsity, eg > m <- Diagonal(5) > m 5 x 5 diagonal matrix of class "ddiMatrix" [,1] [,2] [,3] [,4] [,5] [1,] 1 . . . . [2,] . 1

sparsenet: a new package for sparse model selection
We have put a new package sparsenet on CRAN. Sparsenet fits regularization paths for sparse model selection via coordinate descent, using a penalized least-squares framework and a non-convex penalty. The package is based on our JASA paper Rahul Mazumder, Jerome Friedman and Trevor Hastie: SparseNet : Coordinate Descent with Non-Convex Penalties. (JASA 2011)

Marginal Homogeneity tests for sparse matrixes ?
Hello people, I am in need for testing Marginal Homogeneity for sparse (more then 2X2) matrixes. After searching, what I found by now is that for more then 2 by 2 matrixes, one turns to "stuart maxwell tests" that are available in two packages: irr - see: stuart.maxwell.mh coin - see: mh_test But I couldn't find in the documentation how valid the results are for sparse matrixes,

Efficient way to compute power of a sparse matrix
Dear all, I would like to compute power of a square non symmetric matrix. This is a part of a simulation study. Matrices are quite large (e.g., 900 by 900), and contains many 0 (more than 99 %). I have try the function mtx.exp of the Biodem package: library(Biodem) m <- matrix(0, 900, 900) i <- sample(1:900, 3000, replace = T) j <- sample(1:900, 3000, replace = T) for(x in 1:3000)

sparse to no sparse
Hi. I have an old Xen para virt vm which I created using sparse file. Is there any way to convert this vm image to non-sparse without shutting down the vm?. Thanks Paras.

pokey
Oi, Bad timing of course, but the following is NOT an april's fools joke: I am working on a GTK+ interface to tinc, which should become an admin tool for the VPN that your tinc is a part of. Its name is pokey, from "pointy & clicky" -- and it is, of course, a reference to Pokey the Penguin. Right now it doesn't do much beside gathering and showing information to you. I

OT: Linux routing with T100P problems
Hey gang, I was successful in recompiling my 2.4.20 kernel to support HDLC. I was successful in hooking up our T1 line into the zap card. I was successful in being able to ping equipment on the other end of the T1. I was unsuccessful in pinging the outside world from the other end of the T1. I've attached a cheezy image of the network. Here is the routing table: [root@asterisk root]# route

smarter sparse files?
Question: Does ext2/3 (or any other filesystem you know of) support a system call turning blocks within a file back into "sparse zeros", i.e. giving the blocks back to the filesystem? Background: I am working on a slotted fileformat where internal fragmentation occurs. One such occurrence is growth of the data in a given slot, which currently requires me to handle the

[Q] e2image: tools for sparse files & e2sfck support
Hi, i have two twofold e2image related questions: 1) The man page mentions "cp (1)"'s --sparse=always option. I wonder if there are sparse aware tools which a) display the "real" amount of disk space occupied by a sparse file b) compress sparse files (other than compressing very thightly several GiB of zeros) 2) "E2fsck, mke2fs, etc.

Syntax question: assigning sparse matrix elements
Hopefully this is straightfoward. I have an matrix which is mostly zeroes. I want to assign it some non-zero elements whose rows, columns, and values I know. As a simple example, say I create a 3x2 matrix of zeros: > m <- matrix(rep(0,6),nrow=3) Now say I want to make the [1,1] and [3,2] elements of this matrix be non-zer, so I create two vectors, one for rows and one for cols: > rows

reshape cast to a sparse matrix?
I am using the reshape package to convert a series of values into a binary matrix. The binary matrix is very sparse with many zeros and I'd like to use cast to generate a sparse matrix using any of the sparse matrix packages of choice. Is there functionality to support this use? Are there strategies or other packages that that may be useful? Due to memory constraints, it would be best to

Making --inplace and --sparse compatible
It seems to me that it should be possible to make --inplace and --sparse compatible. The manpage says -S, --sparse ... Conflicts with --inplace because it's not possible to overwrite data in a sparse fashion. but I think it _is_ possible to do that, provided the receiving side opens the dest file read-write instead of write-only. When writing within the existing

Construction of a large sparse matrix
Dear List: I'm working to construct a very large sparse matrix and have found relief using the SparseM package. I have encountered an issue that is confusing to me and wonder if anyone may be able to suggest a smarter solution. The matrix I'm creating is a covariance matrix for a larger research problem that is subsequently used in a simulation. Below is the latex form of the matrix if

Softphone (with USB headset) for Mac recommendations
Well, I have my 7940 up and running at home, and everything's working pretty much perfectly. So, it's time to find new things to break :-). The problem de jour is long-distance calling from work: I can use my cell phone, but I'm in an inside office on the 42nd floor and it's really hard to get good reception. So, I'm thinking about running a softphone on my Mac laptop
