issue with large number of files
Hi, I use rsync to syncronize two systems. There are 2 million + files. My problem is 1. rsync is very slow (it needs more than 48 hours) 2. rsync needs too much RAM (ca. 750 MByte on each server) The backup software needs 14 hours including file transfer to the backup server for full backup. My configuration: 1. Server Dual-XEON with 2 GB RAM. 2. Server Dual-PIII with 2 GB RAM. The partition

Using rsync to syncronize two unmounted disk partitions
Hi everybody, I have been using rsync for quite some time, and I've realized it is a fantastic tool. As it is able to syncronize two CD images, I was wondering, if I could do that with a harddisk partition. Would it be possible to syncronize two partitions at device level somehow? I mean using: # rsync /dev/hda8 /dev/hda9 skipping non-regular file "hda8" where /dev/hda8

"touch" option for -c ?
Hi, I hope this hasn't been asked before ... I couldn't find it anyway. To the best of my knowledge, without the -c option rsync judges file differences based on date stamp and file size. This speeds things up of course but can be problematic when date stamps of two otherwise identical files are uncontrollable (say when they come from two different sources, such as installed from CD vs

Rsync and windows
Hi there, I have a problem syncronizing a windows machine with a linux box. I want to backup the "My Documents" folder. Therefore I burned the data on a cdrom because the windows pc is only connected over a slow wan connection to the linux box. When I copy the data to the users home directory (using samba and another windows pc) and run the rsync program all the files are copied once

syncronizing file content into device content
I have repeatable cases where a (very large) file contents are the intended content of a device (partition) of that exact size. The target device is already mostly of that content, but a few block have been changed. I want to restore the device contents back to what the file originally was. I'm trying to find a way to have rsync's write end open the device as a file and do its thing to

Using RSYNC for Multiple Servers
Hi all, Am wanting to backup three servers to a AIT tape device that is connected to a SCO 5.0.5 server. Apart from itself, there is one other SCO 5.0.5 system and a Slackware Linux server. Is it possible to use RSYNC to backup all three servers from the primary SCO server to the tape device ? I wish to append to the tape device also for incremental backups. Any other suggestions appreciated.

OCFS2 and direct-io writes
I am looking at possibility of using OCFS2 with an existing application that requires very high throughput for read and write file access. Files are created by single writer (process) and can be read by multiple reader, possibly while the file is being written. 100+ different files may be written simultaneously, and can be read by 1000+ readers. I am currently using XFS on a local filesystem,

Samba domain time sync woes (Debian Bookworm)
FWIW, I looked at the settings in our domain (all of which I did myself). I used to explicitly set up ntp time sources in our network for all windows workstations before, and I continued to provide these after conversion from nt4-style domain to samba AD-DC. The NTP records are provided by DHCP, and are configured in the GPO, both with regional differences (choosing the local NTP servers within

Syntax for using rsync options --exclude and --delete!
Hello All, I was wondering if anyone has a viable syntax solution for using rsync with the --exclude and --delete option. I have been using the rsync process to backup certain files and filesystems for ease of recovery in the event of unexpected downtime on the primary. I recently noticed that the process is not deleting files on the destination host that were removed from the source at some
